The aim of this article is to present the current state of knowledge in the field of cognitive dysfunctions in bipolar disorders (BD). These dysfunctions are considered to be a result of brain activation disorders and occur in such domains as attention, psychomotor speed, visuospatial abilities, different aspects of executive functions (e.g. cognitive flexibility, reaction inhibition), decision making, memory and learning, emotion processing. The picture of cognitive dysfunctions is different in states of mania and depression. Cognitive dysfunctions are present not only in different phases of

Depressive disorder causes cognitive symptoms. In the case of severe cognitive symptoms or when psychometric procedures measure cognitive decline in the range of dementia, depressed patients may be diagnosed as Depressive Pseudo-Dementia (DPD). There is no data that depressive disorder can cause dementia without coexisting depressive symptoms. The latter symptoms are frequently overseen because cognitive symptoms are equated with organic brain disease. There are typical neuropsychological features of cognitive decline in depressive disorders, like psychomotor retardation and the slow-start phe

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare form of syndromic oculocutaneous albinism caused by disorders in lysosome-related organelles. Ten genes are associated with different forms of HPS. HPS type 9 (HPS-9) is caused by biallelic variants of BLOC1S6. To date, only three patients with HPS-9 have been reported. We described one patient presenting with ocular features of albinism. Genetic analysis revealed two compound heterozygous variants in the BLOC1S6 gene. Extended hematological studies confirmed the platelet storage pool disease with absence of dense granules and abnormal platelet aggrega

Benzodiazepine/hypnotic abuse and dependency increase with advanced age. Especially in the elderly, severe adverse events accompany the regular intake of these substances. Sedation, cognitive and psychomotor effects, falls, accidents and injuries are very frequent. The withdrawal of the medication is often associated with major complications. Therefore, prevention is important. These substances should not be prescribed against minor sleep and anxiety disorders and their use should not be restricted to 3–4 weeks. Withdrawal symptoms can include insomnia, anxiety, memory and concentration impair

Pitt-Hopkins syndrome is characterized by mental retardation, hyperventilation, and dysmorphic features due to TCF4 mutations. We report a case of Pitt-Hopkins syndrome in a 2½-year-old boy presenting with psychomotor retardation, recurrent respiratory tract infections, and dysmorphic features with absence of hyperventilation or other breathing abnormalities. Comparative genomic hybridization and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were used to confirm TCF4 haploinsufficiency. Pitt-Hopkins syndrome is a rare debilitating disease that should be in the differential diagnosis

Malignant infantile osteopetrosis (MIOP) is a hereditary bone disorder caused by osteoclastic dysfunction. Within the first year of life affected children present with recurrent infections, vision impairment, failure to thrive, bone marrow failure, and at later stages neurological deficits and ultimately death. Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is the only curative treatment. We present a patient with MIOP, who showed the first symptoms at three weeks of age, and the disease was diagnosed at 11 months of age. The boy had a successful BMT after which the delayed psychomotor development improved.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Seasonal changes, particularly increased daylight exposure, are known to influence dopamine transporter (DAT) availability, potentially affecting mood disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to evaluate seasonal variations in the striatum using ¹²³I-FP-CIT SPECT in patients with MDD, and examine associations with specific psychopathological symptoms.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, DAT SPECT scans from 85 patients with MDD were analyzed according to the season of imaging-fall-winter (FW) or spring-summer (SS). Psychometric assessments incl

Sixteen patients out of 58 children with congenital hydrocephalus were retrospectively investigated in terms of their psychomotor development and morphological findings of the brain by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and morphological backgrounds of the brain in patients affected by "intractable hydrocephalus" were intended to be clarified. The 16 patients were primarily diagnosed as having aqueductal stenosis or communicating hydrocephalus during the era before introduction of MRI. On the basis of the rate of head growth, sixteen patients were divided into three groups; group-1: overt neona

BACKGROUND: Alternating hemiplegia of childhood is an intractable neurological disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of alternating hemiplegia accompanied by other paroxysmal symptoms. Recent research has identified mutations in the ATP1A3 gene as the underlying cause. Adenosine-5'-triphosphate has a vasodilatory effect, can enhance muscle strength and physical performance, and was hypothesized to improve the symptoms of paroxysmal hemiplegia.
METHODS: A 7-year-old boy with alternating hemiplegia of childhood who was positive for a de novo ATP1A3 mutation was treated with adenosine- 5'

We report two sisters with macrocephaly, epilepsy, and severe mental retardation. The first child was a 14 year old girl born at term after a normal pregnancy, with birth weight 3600 g and occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) 36 cm (75th centile). Her head size increased markedly during the first six months of life, and was later stable at 2-3 cm above the 97.5th centile. Her development was characterised by psychomotor delay, epilepsy, and autistic features. Her face appeared mildly dysmorphic with a large forehead, short philtrum, and bushy eyebrows. Her younger sister was also born at term w

Most imprinting disorders (IDs) entail growth abnormalities. Some patients with IDs caused by epimutation have multi-locus imprinting disturbance (MLID) showing aberrant methylation patterns in multiple differentially methylated regions (DMRs). Patients with MLID often have typical ID-specific symptoms. However, certain MLID cases have only non-specific symptoms, and it is necessary to clarify the association between their clinical features and the affected DMRs. We report a case of MLID presenting with overgrowth and temporarily impaired glucose tolerance. Genome-wide methylation analysis for

Catatonia is a psychomotor syndrome that can be associated with both psychiatric diseases (mainly mood disorders, but also psychotic disorders) and medical conditions. Lorazepam (6-21 mg/day, occasionally up to 30 md/day) is the first choice treatment and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the second line, regardless of the underlying clinical condition. There are some evidences also for effectiveness of other medications. Patients treated acutely usually show rapid and full therapeutic response but even longstanding catatonia can improve. However, some authors suggested that chronic catatonia

Psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders may arise from anomalies in long-range neuronal connectivity downstream of pathologies in dendritic spines. However, the mechanisms that may link spine pathology to circuit abnormalities relevant to atypical behavior remain unknown. Using a mouse model to conditionally disrupt a critical regulator of the dendritic spine cytoskeleton, the actin-related protein 2/3 complex (Arp2/3), we report here a molecular mechanism that unexpectedly reveals the inter-relationship of progressive spine pruning, elevated frontal cortical excitation of pyramidal neuro

Catatonia is a psychomotor and behavioral syndrome associated with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, neurological disease, and general medical conditions. Catatonia has also been described as a manifestation of partial onset seizures. We describe a case of catatonia following successful epilepsy surgery. A 38-year-old patient with congenital hydrocephalus and left hippocampal sclerosis underwent selective left amygdalohippocampectomy for medically refractory seizures. Three days after surgery, she became progressively less interactive. Verbal output was dramatically reduced. She exhibited w
