[Effect of noise, exertion and thermal load on temporary auditory threshold shift (TTS) and on fatigue].

Temporary threshold shifts were determined in 14 voluntary subjects who were exposed during one hour to noise levels 70, 85 and 100 dB(A) accompanied by physical exercise (30% VO2max), thermal load (TE = 32.0 +/- 0.8 degrees C), and after combined exposure to these three factors. Before and after each exposure, temporary were measured threshold shifts (TTS2) at frequencies 3, 4 and 6 kHz. The psychophysical fatigue was determined using flicker and blinking tests. The results showed that exposure to noise, noise and thermal load, noise and exercise, and combined noise-exercise -thermal load exp

Motor imagery, forward models and the cerebellum: a commentary on Rieger et al., 2023.

In this commentary on Rieger et al., Psychological Research Psychologische Forschung, 2023, I discuss possible ways to test the hypothesis that action imagery is achieved by simulations of actions through an internal forward model. These include brain imaging, perturbation through TMS, and psychophysical tests of adaptation of intended reach actions.

G. T. Fechner (1848): Plants as sentient living beings.

While Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) is widely celebrated as the founder of experimental psychophysics, his pioneering work on the psychic life of plants - Nanna, oder über das Seelenleben der Pflanzen (1848) - has historically been relegated to the margins as mystical or unscientific. However, a contemporary re-examination reveals that Fechner's arguments were deeply rooted in empirical observation and inductive reasoning, anticipating current discourse on plant intelligence, learning, and communication. Regarding plant awareness, for instance, Fechner posits that their intimate physical …

The one-up one-down adaptive (staircase) procedure in speech-in-noise testing: Standard error of measurement and fluctuations in the track.

The one-up one-down adaptive (staircase or up-down) procedure is often used to estimate the speech recognition threshold (SRT) in speech-in-noise testing. This article provides a brief historical overview of the one-up one-down procedure in psychophysics, discussing the groundbreaking early work that is still relevant to clinical audiology and scientific research. Next, this article focuses on two aspects of the one-up one-down adaptive procedure: first, the standard error of measurement (SEM) and, second, the fluctuations in the track [i.e., the standard deviation of the signal-to-noise ratio…

Perimetry and visual field defects.

Perimetry is the quantitation of the visual field. This is done with a perimeter and usually involves measuring visual thresholds to a range of light stimuli. It is used clinically to map patterns of visual loss due to damage to the sensory visual system. This chapter discusses the types of perimetric testing and the psychophysics of perimetry. This is followed by the interpretation of perimetric results, the relevant visual system anatomy, and patterns of loss helpful for neurologic localization. Lastly, the difficult issue of deciding whether the visual field has changed is reviewed. Pattern…

The amblyopic deficit for 2nd order processing: Generality and laterality.

A number of previous reports have suggested that the processing of second-order stimuli by the amblyopic eye (AE) is defective and that the fellow non-amblyopic eye (NAE) also exhibits an anomaly. Second-order stimuli involve extra-striate as well as striate processing and provide a means of exploring the extent of the cortical anomaly in amblyopia using psychophysics. We use a range of different second-order stimuli to investigate how general the deficit is for detecting second-order stimuli in adult amblyopes. We compare these results to our previously published adult normative database usin…

Visual field defects and neural losses from experimental glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a relatively common disease in which the death of retinal ganglion cells causes a progressive loss of sight, often leading to blindness. Typically, the degree of a patient's visual dysfunction is assessed by clinical perimetry, involving subjective measurements of light-sense thresholds across the visual field, but the relationship between visual and neural losses is inexact. Therefore, to better understand of the effects of glaucoma on the visual system, a series of investigations involving psychophysics, electrophysiology, anatomy, and histochemistry were conducted on experimenta…

Delayed-onset muscle soreness does not influence occlusal sensitivity and position sense of the mandible.

Masticatory muscle-pain patients often complain about sensorimotor changes, but the effects of pain on the psychophysical properties remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) on the jaw's position sense (PS) and occlusal sensitivity (OS). In all, 12 participants underwent intense concentric-eccentric jaw exercises. Self-reported muscle fatigue and pain, pain-free maximum mouth opening (MMO), pain pressure thresholds (PPTs) at right and left masseter and right and left anterior temporalis, maximum voluntary bite force (MVBF), PS and OS w

Detection of pulse trains in the electrically stimulated cochlea: effects of cochlear health.

Perception of electrical stimuli varies widely across users of cochlear implants and across stimulation sites in individual users. It is commonly assumed that the ability of subjects to detect and discriminate electrical signals is dependent, in part, on conditions in the implanted cochlea, but evidence supporting that hypothesis is sparse. The objective of this study was to define specific relationships between the survival of tissues near the implanted electrodes and the functional responses to electrical stimulation of those electrodes. Psychophysical and neurophysiological procedures were

Olfactory Function in Cystic Fibrosis: Outcome Measures, Olfactory Dysfunction Prevalence and the Impact of Management-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is an increasingly recognized but under-investigated comorbidity of cystic fibrosis (CF). Its prevalence, assessment methods, and response to CF-directed treatment, including highly effective modulator therapy (HEMT) remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD420251060317) with a database search from inception to December 2025. Studies were eligible if they included participants with confirmed CF and reported an explicit olfactory outcome. Two reviewers independently screened titles a

Search Efficiency Drives Reference Production Across Modalities, But Colour Is Special.

When speakers refer to objects in the world, they frequently overinform. Contrary to classical theories in linguistics, we hypothesise that overinformativeness is an efficient means of facilitating listener comprehension: speakers use redundancy to provide their listeners with search-efficient perceptual information. In Experiment One (N = 72), we operationalise search efficiency as the ease or difficulty of perceptual discrimination. We borrow methods from psychophysics to manipulate discriminability across attributes (material, colour) and across sensory modalities (audition, vision). We sho…

Feature interference underlies a neuronal basis for the behavioral cost of task uncertainty.

Humans and animals have an impressive ability to juggle multiple tasks in a constantly changing environment. This flexibility, however, worsens performance under uncertain task conditions. Here we combined monkey electrophysiology, human psychophysics and artificial neural network modeling to investigate the neuronal mechanisms underlying this performance cost. We developed a behavioral paradigm to measure and influence participants' decision-making and perception in two distinct perceptual tasks. Our data reveal that both humans and monkeys, unlike an artificial neural network trained for the…

Immersion in nature through virtual reality attenuates the development and spread of mechanical secondary hyperalgesia: a role for insulo-thalamic effective connectivity.

Nature-based social prescribing has been shown to improve physical and mental health and is increasingly used to manage chronic pain. However, the mechanisms of nature-based analgesia remain unclear. In this study, we used immersive virtual reality (VR) alongside pain psychophysics, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and psychometric assessments to assess the brain-based mechanisms of nature-based pain relief. Specifically, we experimentally induced sensitisation within central nociceptive pathways using the high frequency stimulation model of pain in 30 healthy participants and tracked th…

Perceptual learning with dichoptic attention tasks improves attentional modulation in V1 and IPS and reduces interocular suppression in human amblyopia.

Long-term and chronic visual suppression to the non-preferred eye in early childhood is a key factor in developing amblyopia, as well as a critical barrier to treat amblyopia. To explore the relationship between selective visual attention and amblyopic suppression and its role in the success of amblyopic training, we used EEG source-imaging to show that training human adults with strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia with dichoptic attention tasks improved attentional modulation of neural populations in the primary visual cortex (V1) and intraparietal sulcus (IPS). We also used psychophysics …

Evidence for strictly monocular processing in visual motion opponency and Glass pattern perception.

When presented with locally paired dots moving in opposite directions, motion selective neurons in the middle temporal cortex (MT) reduce firing while neurons in V1 are unaffected. This physiological effect is known as motion opponency. The current study used psychophysics to investigate the neural circuit underlying motion opponency. We asked whether opposing motion signals could arrive from different eyes into the receptive field of a binocular neuron while still maintaining motion opponency. We took advantage of prior findings that orientation discrimination of the motion axis (along which …

A dynamic object-processing network: metric shape discrimination of dynamic objects by activation of occipitotemporal, parietal, and frontal cortices.

Shape perception is important for object recognition. However, behavioral studies have shown that rigid motion also contributes directly to the recognition process, in addition to providing visual cues to shape. Using psychophysics and functional brain imaging, we investigated the neural mechanisms involved in shape and motion processing for dynamic object recognition. Observers discriminated between pairs of rotating novel objects in which the 3-dimensional shape difference between the pair was systematically varied in metric steps. In addition, the objects rotated in either the same or the d…
