Transitioning to employment with a rheumatic disease: the role of independence, overprotection, and social support.

OBJECTIVE: To examine perceived independence, overprotection, and support, and their association with the employment participation of young adults with rheumatic disease. METHODS: One hundred and forty-three young adults, ages 18 to 30 years, with systemic lupus erythematosus (54.5%) and juvenile arthritis (45.5%) completed a 30-min online questionnaire of their work and education experiences. Information collected was demographic, health (e.g., pain, fatigue, disease activity), work context (e.g., career satisfaction, helpfulness of job accommodation/benefits, and workplace activity limitati

State-of-the-Art Review: The Intersection of Infectious Diseases and Carceral Medicine.

Mass incarceration is a national epidemic; all clinicians will encounter persons currently incarcerated or with a history of criminal-legal involvement. Infections are highly prevalent in these populations. This review will support clinicians to provide evidence-based infectious diseases treatment with explicit recognition of the interpersonal and structural intricacies in carceral care. Following a criminal-legal system primer, clinicians will have a finer understanding of the psychosocial complexities involved in building provider-patient relationships with those impacted by this system. Advancing Mental Healthcare for Individuals With Cystic Fibrosis in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) presents significant challenges for both patients and their families. However, the mental health needs of persons with cystic fibrosis (PWCF) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain under-explored. Limited resources, fragmented healthcare systems, and inequities in access to essential CF treatments often compound psychological stressors such as depression, anxiety, and caregiver burden. METHODS: This review examined existing literature, found in several medical databases (e.g., PubMed, PsychInfo, Embase, Cochrane Library), on the mental health and p

Understanding the early support needs of survivors of traumatic events: The example of severe injury survivors.

OBJECTIVE: In the aftermath of a potentially traumatic event, people may experience a range of mental health outcomes, including subclinical symptoms and distress. There is growing evidence that trauma survivors with subclinical symptoms are at increased risk of developing later psychiatric disorders, and this is especially the case with severe injury survivors. There is a need to develop evidence-based, early, brief interventions for those who are at risk of developing trauma-related psychopathology. To date, interventions for this at-risk group have largely been derived from expert consensus

A patient-led, peer-to-peer qualitative study on the psychosocial relationship between young adults with inflammatory bowel disease and food.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic gastrointestinal diseases that negatively affect the enjoyment of food and engagement in social and cultural gatherings. Such experiences may promote psychosocial challenges, an aspect of IBD often overlooked and under-supported in clinical settings and research. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the psychosocial experiences that young adults with IBD have with food via a qualitative patient-led research process. METHODS: Trained patient researchers conducted this study by engaging peers via semi-structured interviews and focus groups

Natural Language Processing of Referral Letters for Machine Learning-Based Triaging of Patients With Low Back Pain to the Most Appropriate Intervention: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Decision support systems (DSSs) for suggesting optimal treatments for individual patients with low back pain (LBP) are currently insufficiently accurate for clinical application. Most of the input provided to train these systems is based on patient-reported outcome measures. However, with the appearance of electronic health records (EHRs), additional qualitative data on reasons for referrals and patients' goals become available for DSSs. Currently, no decision support tools cover a wide range of biopsychosocial factors, including referral letter information to help clinicians triag

Associations of life satisfaction, emotional support, and social isolation with lung cancer screening adherence among US adults.

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence suggests that psychosocial factors such as life satisfaction, emotional support, and social isolation may influence adherence to cancer screening behaviors. Limited evidence exists in the case of lung cancer screening (LCS). Hence, we are investigating how life satisfaction, emotional support, and social isolation were associated with the recommended annual LCS use among the screening-eligible population. METHOD: We utilized population-based data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), comprising 12,380 LCS-eligible adults aged 50-79 yea

10-year variability in high and low life satisfaction trajectories post-traumatic brain injury: a TBI model systems study.

PURPOSE: To determine how life satisfaction changes across the first 10 years following traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Participants included 1,941 individuals from the TBI Model Systems database with life satisfaction data at 1-, 5-, and 10-years post-TBI. Based on Satisfaction With Life Scale scores, individuals were characterized as having one of the five 10-year life satisfaction trajectories: 'Stable High,' 'Stable Low,' 'Increased to High,' 'Decreased to Low,' and 'Unstable.' These were analyzed for group differences in demographics and psychosocial and functional outcomes. RESU

Dimensionality of psychosocial responses to marital disruption.

The purpose of the study was to assess whether psychosocial responses to marital disruption were best arranged along one single dimension ranging from maximum positive to maximum negative responses, or whether positive and negative responses constituted two separate and distinct dimensions. Participants were 658 recently divorced individuals. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed that a two-factor model provided a better fit to the data than a one-factor model. Moreover, a number of external variables differentiated between positive and negative responses, indicating that such responses refl

Psychological stress, neuroimmunomodulation, and susceptibility to infectious diseases in animals and man: a review.

This article reviews research on the role of psychological stress, personality, social support and other psychosocial factors in bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. After 100 years of research on man and animals, psychological stress is considered as a potential cofactor in the pathogenesis of infectious disease. Psychological stress seems able to alter the susceptibility of animals and man to infectious agents, influencing the onset, course and outcome of certain infectious pathologies. Many experiments have identified in neuroimmunomodulation the principal mediator of the alterations

Impact of psychosocial status on sleep quality in adolescents with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Adequate sleep is essential for neurodevelopment and immune regulation, yet adolescents with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) are at high risk for sleep disturbances. While these associations are well-documented in adults, data on the pediatric population remains limited. This study evaluated sleep quality in Indonesian adolescents with cSLE and examined its association with psychosocial distress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 60 adolescents (aged 10-18 years) diagnosed with cSLE at a tertiary hospital in Bandung, Indonesia. Psychosocial status wa

Empowering Women Living With HIV Through Partner-Based Interventions: A Scoping Review.

Spouses and partners play a crucial role in the well-being of women living with HIV (WLWH), especially in family-oriented cultures. This scoping review examined partner-inclusive interventions to strengthen support systems for WLWH. We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for peer-reviewed studies from 2004 to 2024. Of 1,375 records screened, six randomized trials conducted in the U.S., China, Ethiopia, and sub-Saharan Africa met the inclusion criteria. Four involved WLWH-partner dyads, two included other family members. Interventions varied in format and were facilitated by healt

Pixar's Inside Out as a Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Informed Intervention for Adults.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically validated treatment for chronic, difficult-to-treat, life-threatening mental health conditions. DBT can be challenging to implement and maintain in managed care systems because of the need for substantial infrastructure and intensive clinician training. As a result, most clients receive components of DBT, known as DBT-informed care. This model is valuable in its own right, including for individuals with less severe clinical symptoms. Additionally, clinicians who provide DBT experience professional benefit. Cinematherapy, the incorporation of

Restoring Function After TBI: A Review of Physical Therapy Strategies for Balance, Gait, and Dual-Task Recovery.

Individuals with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience impairments in balance, gait, and dual-task ability, limiting their functional independence and community reintegration. These deficits arise from disruptions across sensory, motor, and cognitive systems, requiring comprehensive physical therapy (PT) assessment and intervention. PT evaluations incorporate strength, coordination, and sensory integration measures using standardized outcome measures such as the Berg Balance Scale, Functional Gait Assessment, and dual-task assessments such as the Timed Up and Go (cog

rTMS/iTBS and Cognitive Rehabilitation for Deficits Associated With TBI and PTSD: A Theoretical Framework and Review.

Rehabilitation of cognitive and psychosocial deficits resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be an area of concern in health care. Commonly co-occurring psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder, create additional hurdles when attempting to remediate cognitive sequelae. There is increased need for procedures that will yield consistent gains indicative of recovery of function. Intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, has potential as an instrument that can be tailored t
