Thyroid function in girls with central precocious puberty.

PURPOSE: Obesity is a well-known risk factor for central precocious puberty (CPP). Recently, elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was reported in obese youth. However, few data regarding the relationship between CPP and TSH are available. The aim of this study was to evaluate thyroid function in girls with CPP and the relationship between CPP and serum TSH concentration. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. A total of 1,247 girls aged between 6.0 and 8.9 years who had undergone a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test to determine the presence of pube

Central precocious puberty as a prelude of gonad dysplasia.

There is increasing evidence that patients with gonad dysplasia, as characterized by absent or incomplete puberty, can also exhibit central precocious puberty (CPP). Herein, we review the reported cases that manifest with both gonad dysplasia and CPP. Further, we examine the hypothesis that these patients exhibit a normal hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, hypogonadism, and the presence of residual gonadal function, and that the onset of disease is related to early initiation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Thus, we suggest that CPP is a prelude of some partial hypogonadism.

Central Precocious Puberty in a Child With Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.

Metachromatic leucodystrophy (MLD) is a rare inherited lysosomal disorder caused by reduced activity of the enzyme arylsulfatase A with accumulation of sulfatides in the nervous system. We report a female child affected by MLD who developed central precocious puberty (CPP). This association has not been described so far. The proposita, after normal growth and psychomotor development, at age of 30 months presented with a rapidly progressive gait disturbance with frequent falls and with loss of acquired language skills. Magnetic resonance imaging showed leukoencephalopathy. Biochemical blood ess

Association study of LIN28B in girls with precocious puberty.

BACKGROUND: Central precocious puberty (CPP), predominant in girls, is defined by early development of secondary sexual characteristics driven by the early secretion of hypothalamic gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and subsequent gonadotropin. Recent studies have shown variation in the LIN28B gene is associated with timing of puberty, but only a few have show it to be associated with CPP. METHODS: This study attempted to investigate the relation between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in LIN28B and girls with precocious puberty. Genotype and alleles frequencies of selected SNPs we

Hepatoblastoma presenting as precocious puberty: a case report.

Hepatoblastoma (HB), a primary liver tumor in childhood, is often accompanied by alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) secretion, and sometimes by β-human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (β-hCG) secretion, and this can cause peripheral precocious puberty (PPP). We describe a case of PPP associated with HB. Laboratory tests showed an increase in AFP, β-hCG and testosterone values, and suppression of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels. After chemotherapy and surgery, AFP, β-hCG and testosterone levels normalized and signs of virilization did not progress further. The child did not show

Precocious puberty in a patient with mosaic Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome (TS) is one of the most common human chromosome abnormalities, occurring in approximately 1:2500 live female births. Short stature, ovarian dysgenesis and infertility are clinical hallmarks in the majority of patients with TS. The incidence of spontaneous puberty in TS is reported to be about one third. Precocious puberty in TS patients is very rare. Herein, we report precocious puberty in a case with TS.

Disorders of childhood growth and development: precocious puberty.

Precocious puberty is defined as pubertal development that begins at an earlier age than expected; most US pediatric endocrinology subspecialists use cutoff ages of 8 years for girls and 9 years for boys. Early activation and maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis leads to hormonal changes, physical signs of puberty, and acceleration of linear growth. Factors affecting puberty include race/ethnicity, obesity, and endocrine disruptors. The 2 forms of precocious puberty are central (gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty) and peripheral (gonadotropin-independent precocious pube

Sonography of abdominal organs in precocious puberty in girls.

(Co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated for body weights of an elite Brahman herd under a designed, supervised management and genetic program, including strategic artificial insemination (AI). Restricted maximum likelihood methods were used with a univariate animal model for birth weight (BW) and a bivariate model for weaning weight (205-day weight, 205W) and 18-month weight (548-day weight, 548W). Models included random animal direct and maternal genetic effects, maternal permanent environmental effect (c2), and sex-year-month of birth-age of dam and genetic group (ident

[Precocious puberty in a vertically HIV-infected girl].

The authors present the case of a vertically HIV infected, six-year-old girl, with precocious puberty. The late diagnosis of HIV both in the mother and in the child is of significance. Different causes of adrenarche precox are also discussed. In pediatric practice vertical HIV infection should be taken into consideration in differential diagnosis. In routine care of HIV-infected children, monitoring of development including sexual development is indicated. The presence of symptoms of adrenarche precox, as in noninfected children needs in depth diagnostic investigations. The role of HIV infecti

Hypothalamic hamartoma with precocious puberty: a case report.

Hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) is one of the most important causes of central precocious puberty in male children. Hamartomas are malformations composed of ectopic gonadotropic hormone (GnRH) neurons which secrete pulsatile gonadotropin releasing hormone. They are generally observed in children under 3 years. A case of 11/3 year-old male child presented with premature development of secondary sexual characters i.e., growth of pubic and axillary hair, enlargement of penis and acne over the face for the last 5 months. On physical examination, his height was 1.02 m and his weight 18kg, enlarged peni

Role of pelvic ultrasound in girls with precocious puberty.

Pelvic ultrasound evaluation of girls presenting with secondary sex characteristics before the age of 8 years may help to differentiate precocious puberty from premature thelarche, functioning ovarian cyst, and obesity. However, although uterine and ovarian measurements are significantly higher in girls with true precocious puberty than controls, there is a significant overlap of normal prepubertal and early pubertal values. In girls with precocious puberty treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue, ultrasound is a valid tool for monitoring ovarian suppression.

Association study in Taiwanese girls with precocious puberty.

BACKGROUND: The timing of puberty has a genetic component. Recently, genome-wide association studies have identified that rs314280 on 6q21 (near the LIN28B gene) and rs2090409 on 9q31.2 (in an intergenic region) are associated with age at menarche. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the two loci were associated with the timing of puberty in Taiwanese girls. RESULTS: A total of 117 girls were divided into two groups: (1) precocious puberty (n=50) and (2) normal control subjects (n=45). The genotype proportions and allele frequencies in both groups were not significantly different. C

Precocious puberty in an infant with hepatoblastoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The syndrome of isosexual precocious puberty associated with primary malignant hepatic tumors is rare. All previously reported cases in the literature are old and prognosis was grim. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 15-month-old Asian male baby who presented with precocious puberty associated with hepatoblastoma. Serum concentrations of alpha-fetoprotein and free testosterone were elevated, as was beta human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. He was treated with six courses of chemotherapy and underwent surgery. His surface markers as well as free testosterone level retu

[Etiology and prognosis of peripheral precocious puberty in children].

OBJECTIVE: To study the causes and prognosis of peripheral precocious puberty. METHODS: The levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol (E2) were detected by a simplified gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test. The etiologies of 125 children with peripheral precocious puberty were explored by ultrasound scans and bone age assessment. A total of 102 cases were followed up for 3 months to 7.5 years. RESULTS: The etiological distribution of these children was as follows: exogenous hormones intake (n=80), ovarian cyst (n=11), McCune-Albri

Treatment of precocious puberty in McCune-Albright syndrome.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is typically defined as a triad of precocious puberty (PP), café au lait spots and fibrous dysplasia of bone. PP is the most common endocrinological manifestation of this rare disease and is much more common in girls than in boys. The treatment options for PP associated with MAS have evolved over the last twenty plus years. Therapy in girls typically includes the use of an anti-estrogen, while treatment options in boys include an antiandrogen in combination with an aromatase inhibitor (AI). This article will briefly review the older therapies and explain why they

Precocious puberty in a girl with floating-harbor syndrome.

Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by short stature, delayed bone age, mild to moderate mental retardation, speech problems, and peculiar craniofacial features. In these patients pubertal development has been reported to be normal. In this paper, we describe a girl with FHS who developed precocious puberty. FHS diagnosis was made at 2 years 5 months on the basis of peculiar clinical features. At 7 years 7 months, the girl began pubertal development; her height was 112.5 cm (-2.42 SDS) and pubertal staging was B2 PH2 AH1. LHRH test underlined LH and FSH peak

[Familial precocious puberty -- a variant of norm or pathology?].

Since 1937, when familial precocious puberty (FPP) was described for the first time, only few reports on FPP have been published. The majority of them is concerned with the most investigated form of FPP, occurring only in male --testotoxicosis (male-limited precocious puberty -- MLPP). Recently another form of FPP -- familial hyperestrogenism (aromatase excess syndrome -- AES) has been described. The authors aimed to review the literature data concerning different forms of FPP emphasizing the diagnostic criteria, etiology, mode of inheritance and treatment.
