DengueTools: innovative tools and strategies for the surveillance and control of dengue.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease estimated to cause about 230 million infections worldwide every year, of which 25,000 are fatal. Global incidence has risen rapidly in recent decades with some 3.6 billion people, over half of the world's population, now at risk, mainly in urban centres of the tropics and subtropics. Demographic and societal changes, in particular urbanization, globalization, and increased international travel, are major contributors to the rise in incidence and geographic expansion of dengue infections. Major research gaps continue to hamper the control of dengue

High blood pressure: the foundation for epidemic cardiovascular disease in African populations.

High-blood pressure is a powerful independent risk factor for death from heart disease and stroke. It is also a common clinical condition affecting more than 600 million persons worldwide and seen in nearly all populations. Although reliable, large-scale, population-based data on high blood pressure in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are limited, recent studies provide important and worrisome findings in both epidemiology and clinical outcomes. Although overall hypertension prevalence is between 10%-15%, prevalence rates as high as 30%-32% have been reported in middle-income urban and some rural area

SunSmart? Skin cancer knowledge and preventive behaviour in a British population representative sample.

The incidence of skin cancer has risen rapidly in the UK over the last 20 years, prompting public health organizations to try and raise awareness of the dangers of sun exposure and the need to practice sun-safe behaviour. This study aimed to assess baseline levels of sun-safe knowledge and behaviour in a British population-representative sample, prior to the launch of Cancer Research UK's 'SunSmart' campaign. A face-to-face survey was conducted through the Office for National Statistics as part of their Omnibus survey. In total, 1848 men and women aged 18 and over were interviewed. Knowledge o

The national public health response to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: Origins, evolution, and recommendations to improve early detection.

Longstanding gaps in the detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and biopsychosocial care call for public health action to improve population health. We aim to broaden the understanding of the iterative role state plans have played over the last 20 years in prioritizing improvements in the detection of ADRD, primary care capacity, and equity for disproportionately affected populations. Informed by national ADRD priorities, state plans convene stakeholders to identify local needs, gaps, and barriers and set the stage for development of a national public health infrastructu

The role of public health nurses in risk factor modification within a high-risk cardiovascular disease population in Ireland - a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Health promotion for cardiovascular disease risk factors management is essential to secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease events. In Ireland, post-cardiac rehabilitation patients are discharged into the care of community public health nurses, who have a health promotion role. Little is known of the public health nurses' perceptions or knowledge surrounding their role in cardiovascular disease risk factor management. Underpinned by a constructivist viewpoint, this study aims to generate empirical evidence on the phenomenon directly from public health nurses' encounters

Artificial intelligence in public health education: current evidence, competencies, and a framework for responsible integration.

Public health practice and education are being profoundly transformed by artificial intelligence (AI), yet formal AI literacy training in academic programs remains lacking. This narrative review synthesizes literature identified through a structured search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for publications issued between January 2020 and June 2026. The narrative synthesis draws on 21 publications, including empirical studies, reviews, perspectives, educational frameworks, and authoritative guidance documents. The review underscores a significant gap between the widespread u…

Patterns of care for COPD by Japanese physicians.

OBJECTIVE: COPD treatment guidelines are available worldwide, yet it is not known how widely they are followed. This study evaluated the clinical care of COPD patients in Japan as compared to guideline recommendations. METHODS: A sample of general and specialist physicians was selected from private outpatient clinics and public hospitals in Japan. Physicians were provided two clinical vignettes (COPD and asthma) and asked to make a diagnosis. They were next asked to define diagnostic tests and treatment recommendations specifically for a COPD patient. Responses were compared to recommendation

Harm Reduction: Front Line Public Health.

Drug use is a public health problem associated with high mortality and morbidity, and is often accompanied by suboptimal engagement in health care. Harm reduction is a pragmatic public health approach encompassing all goals of public health: improving health, social well-being, and quality of life. Harm reduction prioritizes improving the lives of people who use drugs in partnership with those served without a narrow focus on abstinence from drugs. Evidence has shown that harm reduction oriented practice can reduce transmission of blood-borne illnesses, and other injection related infections,

U.S. federally funded television public service announcements (PSAs) to prevent HIV/AIDS: a content analysis.

This article reports a content analysis of 56 English-language public service announcements (PSAs) for HIV/AIDS prevention produced since 1987 by the U.S. federal government for television broadcast. These PSAs do not lead target audiences through a logical sequence from awareness to motivation, skill building, and maintenance. The PSAs underutilize a strategy of "strategic ambiguity" to craft individual PSAs that can address the needs of and appeal to multiple target audiences, thereby directing information not only to heterosexuals, the primary target of these PSAs, but also to homosexuals a

Public health approach to address maternal mortality.

Reducing maternal mortality is one of the major challenges to health systems worldwide, more so in developing countries that account for nearly 99% of these maternal deaths. Lack of a standard method for reporting of maternal death poses a major hurdle in making global comparisons. Currently much of the focus is on documenting the "number" of maternal deaths and delineating the "medical causes" behind these deaths. There is a need to acknowledge the social correlates of maternal deaths as well. Investigating and in-depth understanding of each maternal death can provide indications on practical

Action needed to address molecular HIV surveillance ethical concerns.

There have been growing ethical concerns about the widespread use of HIV-related molecular epidemiological public health surveillance and research-or what has come to be known as molecular HIV surveillance. The varied concerns of the practice originate due to lack of informed consent, lack of demonstrated benefit for communities, potential for eroded patient care relationships leading to poor health outcomes, and potential implications for information sharing and findings which could increase stigmatization and other negative impacts in contexts where HIV, drug use, sex work, migration, and po

A peer assessment approach for learning from public health emergencies.

As an alternative to standard quality improvement approaches and to commonly used after action report/improvement plans, we developed and tested a peer assessment approach for learning from singular public health emergencies. In this approach, health departments engage peers to analyze critical incidents, with the goal of aiding organizational learning within and across public health emergency preparedness systems. We systematically reviewed the literature in this area, formed a practitioner advisory panel to help translate these methods into a protocol, applied it retrospectively to case stud

The public health foundation of health services for American Indians & Alaska Natives.

The integration of public health practices with federal health care for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) largely derives from three major factors: the sovereign nature of AI/AN tribes, the sociocultural characteristics exhibited by the tribes, and that AI/ANs are distinct populations residing in defined geographic areas. The earliest services consisted of smallpox vaccination to a few AI/AN groups, a purely public health endeavor. Later, emphasis on public health was codified in the Snyder Act of 1921, which provided for, among other things, conservation of the health of AI/AN pers…

Prevention, on-site management, and public-health implications of sport-related mild traumatic brain injury in children and adolescents: A mixed-method study.

OBJECTIVES: Sport-related mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are a significant health concern for children and adolescents, particularly in sports contact. Frequent collisions, falls, and impacts increase the risk of mTBI, leading to cognitive, emotional, and physical alterations. Despite growing awareness, limited European data, including Switzerland, hinder effective prevention and management strategies. This study aimed to: (1) assess the incidence of sport-related mTBI among Swiss children and adolescents and evaluate health education and communication activities; (2) explore stakeholder
