Reducing radiation exposure using commonly available objects.

OBJECTIVES: One and a half years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. The environmental radiation dose rate was not critical, but an existing exposure situation has been identified in a large part of Fukushima Prefecture. Although people continue to live and work in the contaminated area, they are not provided with sufficient information to reduce their exposure to radiation by themselves. In this study, we attempt to evaluate the efficiency of radiation shielding by using everyday items widely available to people. METHODS: NaI scintillation and Geiger-Müller

Radiation doses and hazards from processing of crude oil at the Tema oil refinery in Ghana.

Processing of crude oil has been carried out in Ghana for more than four decades without measures to assess the hazards associated with the naturally occurring radionuclides in the raw and processed materials. This study investigates the exposure of the public to (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K in crude oil, petroleum products and wastes at the Tema oil refinery in Ghana using gamma-ray spectrometry. The study shows higher activity concentrations of the natural radionuclides in the wastes than the crude oil and the products with estimated hazard indices less than unity. The values obtained in the s

Appraisal of individual radiation risk in the context of probabilistic exposures.

There exists a growing desire to base safety criteria in different fields on the same principles. The current approach by the international Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) to control radiation exposure touches many aspects such as social, psychological, or economic factors that are important for such principles. This paper attempts to further explore possible ways of defining a common basis for dealing with radiation risks and other safety problems. Specifically, it introduces the following issues: (1) different types of risk are judged differently. To account for this, the concep

Selection of ecologic covariates in the American Cancer Society study.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) Study of the effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on mortality used metropolitan areas to assign exposures to individual cohort members (Pope et al., 1995); these authors did not, however, control for any other place-specific variables in their analysis. Consequently, the study has been criticized on the basis that the association observed between air pollution and mortality may be confounded by other unmeasured ecologic covariates. To address this criticism, the reanalysis team selected a set of place-specific variables that measured determi

Risk of thyroid cancer in the Bryansk Oblast of the Russian Federation after the Chernobyl Power Station accident.

This population-based case-control study investigated whether exposure to radiation from the Chernobyl Power Station accident is associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents aged 0-19 years at the time of the accident who were residing in the more highly contaminated areas of the Bryansk Oblast. Cases were diagnosed with thyroid cancer before October 1, 1997 (n = 26); two controls per case were identified from the Russian State Medical Dosimetrical Registry and were matched by gender, birth year, and raion of residence and type of settlement (urban, town, rur

Assessing the renal toxicity of Capstone depleted uranium oxides and other uranium compounds.

The primary target for uranium toxicity is the kidney. The most frequently used guideline for uranium kidney burdens is the International Commission on Radiological Protection value of 3 microg U g(-1) kidney, a value that is based largely upon chronic studies in animals. In the present effort, a risk model equation was developed to assess potential outcomes of acute uranium exposure. Twenty-seven previously published case studies in which workers were acutely exposed to soluble compounds of uranium (as a result of workplace accidents) were analyzed. Kidney burdens of uranium for these individ

[Results of screening hematological and cytochemical blood studies of 906 children living in Bryansk Province at places with different intensities of soil contamination with cesium-137 and strontium-90].

Populations of children living in the Bryansk territory (radionuclide contamination 0.2-63.9 Cu/km2) are characterized by heterogeneous blood counts, though relevant mean values are close to control. Mean cytochemical indices indicated a significant reduction in activity of point nonspecific esterase (NSEP), a marker of mature T-cells, in children from all the contaminated districts. Shifts in cytochemical blood lymphocytogram by NSEP test evidencing rejuvenascence of T-lymphocyte pool were recorded in 12-33% of children from different villages. A 10% decrease in NSEP suggested poor adaptation

Radon.

Radon is a radioactive gas that emanates from uranium-bearing soil and porous rock. Although radon is most highly concentrated in areas of high uranium concentration, the presence of trace amounts of uranium in most ground sources means that all humans are exposed to radon to some degree. Radon migrates out of soil and rock into the surrounding air, resulting in accumulation in poorly ventilated or closed areas. Such areas represent the primary environments in which humans are exposed to radioactivity from radon to experience detrimental health effects. There is no convincing evidence that any

A bifunctionalised Pb-based MOF for iodine capture and dye removal.

A 2-dimensional Pb(II) metal-organic framework, [Pb(bdc)0.5(py-Phen)NO3]n (SM-3), was synthesized under solvothermal conditions using a mixed ligand approach. SM-3 was assembled using dinuclear SBUs [Pb2(COO)2]2-, an oxygen donor H2bdc = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid, and nitrogen donor py-Phen = pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]-phenanthroline linkers. SM-3 was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, powder-X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, SEM, EDS, TEM, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Crystallographic studies confirmed that SM-3 displays a 2D layered structure with u

A sensitive colorimetric method for the micro determination of iodine in marine water.

More than 70% of the earth surface is covered by water bodies. Marine pollution is associated with the discharge of oils, petroleum products, sewage agricultural wastes, pesticides, heavy metals, waste substances and dumping of radioactive waters in sea. This in turn results in hazards to human health, hindrance to aquatic organisms and impairment of quality for use of sea water. Sea water is reported to contain iodine but the concentration varies according to the location and depth. Here a simple and sensitive method is described for the determination of iodine using leucocrystal violet as a

Fitness loss and germline mutations in barn swallows breeding in Chernobyl.

The severe nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986 resulted in the worst reported accidental exposure of radioactive material to free-living organisms. Short-term effects on human populations inhabiting polluted areas include increased incidence of thyroid cancer, infant leukaemia, and congenital malformations in newborns. Two recent studies have reported, although with some controversy, that germline mutation rates were increased in humans and voles living close to Chernobyl, but little is known about the viability of the organisms affected. Here we report an increased frequency of partial albi

ICRP Publication 115. Lung cancer risk from radon and progeny and statement on radon.

Recent epidemiological studies of the association between lung cancer and exposure to radon and its decay products are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to pooled case-control studies of residential exposures, and to cohorts of underground miners exposed to relatively low levels of radon. The residential and miner epidemiological studies provide consistent estimates of the risk of lung cancer, with significant associations observed at average annual concentrations of approximately 200 Bq/m³ and cumulative occupational levels of approximately 50 working level months (WLM), respectively. Typical pesticides diffuse loading and degradation pattern differences under the impacts of climate and land-use variations.

Riverine sediment can reconstruct the history of organic pollution loads and can provide reliable temporal information for pesticide metabolite dynamics in watershed. Sediment core samples were collected from two riverine sections of a cold watershed base in the presence land use change under agricultural development, and the vertical concentrations of four pesticides (atrazine, prometryn, isoprothiolane, and oxadiazon) and two atrazine metabolites (deisopropyl-atrazine and deethyl-atrazine) were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The presence of pesticides and metabolites was

Effects of cement flue dust from a cement factory on stress parameters and diversity of aquatic plants.

Cement kiln dusts, made of a complex mixture of elements, include high levels of heavy metals such as fluoride, magnesium, lead, cadmium, nickel, zinc, copper, beryllium and some toxic compounds. Because of the toxic element compositions and radioactive isotope properties of cement kiln dusts, not only terrestrial but also aquatic ecosystems are subjected to greater stress. In the present paper, we investigated the effects of pollution caused by Askale-Erzurum cement factory (CF) on the stress parameters and diversity of aquatic plants. For this purpose, aquatic plant species were collected fr

Assessment of uranium concentration in blood of Iraqi females diagnosed with breast cancer.

Cancer is a widespread significant health problem in Iraq and contributes 11% to total deaths. Throughout the Gulf Wars of 1991 and 2003, about 1200 tons of ammunition were dropped around Iraq. After the wars, cancer incidence in Iraq is about 7,000 to 8,000 cancers cases per year, and the overall incidence of lymphoma, leukemia, breast cancer, and lung cancer has increased twofold and even tripled, as compared to the time before the wars. This increase could result from environmental pollution with radioactive materials including uranium, as cancer can be caused by ionizing radiation. To inve

Using total beta-activity measurements in milk to derive thyroid doses from Chernobyl fallout.

Following the Chernobyl accident, more than 200 childhood thyroid cancer cases have been observed in Brest Oblast of Belarus in territories slightly contaminated with 137Cs, but with suspected relatively high 131I fallout. The most helpful measurements available that can be used to estimate thyroid doses for the population of Brest Oblast are the total beta-activity measurements in cow's milk performed using DP-100 device within a few weeks after the accident. The 131I concentrations in milk were derived from the total beta-activity measurements on the basis of (1) a radioecological model used

Limitations on upper bound dose to adults due to intake of 129I in drinking water and a total diet-implications relative to the proposed Yucca Mountain high level radioactive waste repository.

The purpose of this report is to comment on the potential annual doses due to the intake by adults of I, an important radionuclide in the proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain. An often overlooked, but significant, factor is that, in this case, the ground water, which would be the primary transport vehicle for any releases, contains relatively high concentrations of stable iodine (127I); in fact, the median concentration in the ground water in the vicinity of the proposed repository is 5.0 microg L-1. In comparison, the maximum concentration of 129I in the ground w
