The mice from inbred strains BALB/c, 129, C3H/A, C57BL/6J and outbred Wistar rats were tested for their capacity for reaginic sensitization on the response to antigenic stimuli. This study examined the prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in pregnant women in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Between April and July 2004, antenatal attendees at two of the largest maternity clinics in Kinshasa were tested to identify HIV status, syphilis, Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG). HIV seroprevalence was 1.9% in 2082 women. With PCR techniques, CT and NG infections were also uncommon in the first 529 women (1.7% and 0.4%, respectively). Syphilitic aortitis is now rare in developed countries and is sometimes overlooked. A 61-year-old man with bilateral coronary ostial stenoses (#5:90%, #1:99%) and Sellers III/IV aortic regugitatioin (AR) induced by syphilitic aortitis presented with chest pain. Preoperative rapid plasma reagin titer and Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test were strongly positive, 256 fold and 191.25 C.O.I., respectively. Recent studies in Indonesia have reported significant levels of STDs in low-risk urban groups. To gather data on rural women, a prevalence study was undertaken in Bali utilizing a women's health mobile clinic.
