Belief embodiment through eye movements facilitates memory-guided navigation.

The brain evolved to navigate a dynamic and uncertain world, but the mechanisms underlying ethologically-relevant behavioral strategies remain unclear. In the real-world, such strategies are shaped both by task demands and by the cognitive resources available to the animal. We hypothesized that eye movements constitute a vital cognitive resource to support neural computations for memory-guided navigation. We tested this using a naturalistic task in which humans use a joystick to steer and catch flashing targets in a virtual environment lacking explicit position cues. While navigating to the go

Examining the Coding Strength of Object Identity and Nonidentity Features in Human Occipito-Temporal Cortex and Convolutional Neural Networks.

A visual object is characterized by multiple visual features, including its identity, position and size. Despite the usefulness of identity and nonidentity features in vision and their joint coding throughout the primate ventral visual processing pathway, they have so far been studied relatively independently. Here in both female and male human participants, the coding of identity and nonidentity features was examined together across the human ventral visual pathway. The nonidentity features tested included two Euclidean features (position and size) and two non-Euclidean features (image statis

End-to-End Estimation of Hand- and Wrist Forces From Raw Intramuscular EMG Signals Using LSTM Networks.

Processing myoelectrical activity in the forearm has for long been considered a promising framework to allow transradial amputees to control … y outperform a baseline feature-based linear control regression method. This finding indicates that recurrent neural networks can learn to transform raw forearm iEMG signals directly into representations that correlate with forces exerted at the level of the hand to a greater degree than simple features do. Furthermore, the All-to-All and All-to-One strategies were found t …

Performance evaluation of ARIMA, VAR, ANN, GRU, and LSTM for multivariate healthcare time-series prediction: a rigorous, reproducible benchmarking study with ablation analysis on MIMIC-III and eICU.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate forecasting of physiological time-series in the intensive care unit (ICU) is critical for early-warning systems, deterioration detection, and dynamic resource allocation. Yet the comparative literature suffers from five persistent methodological deficiencies: non-unified experimental conditions, heterogeneous preprocessing, univariate classical baselines compared against multivariate neural models, single-run point estimates without variance, and underspecified prediction tasks. METHODS: This paper addresses all five deficiencies through a standardized, reproducible ben

Dystonia as a network disorder: a concept in evolution.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This survey takes into consideration the most recent advances in both human degenerative ataxias, disorders with a well established cerebellar origin, and discoveries from dystonia rodent models aimed at discussing the pathogenesis of dystonia. RECENT FINDINGS: One common recurrent term that emerges when describing dystonia is heterogeneity. Indeed, dystonia encompasses a wide group of 'hyperkinetic' movement disorders, with heterogeneous causes, classification, anatomical and physiological substrates. In addition, the clinical heterogeneity of age at onset, symptom distrib

A deep-learning approach to predict bleeding risk over time in patients on extended anticoagulation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Thus far, all the clinical models developed to predict major bleeding in patients on extended anticoagulation therapy use the ba … veloped clinical models, on the remaining 30% of the data. RESULTS: An ensemble of feedforward and recurrent neural networks that used the baseline and follow-up data was the best-performing model, achieving a sensitivity and a specificity of 61% and 82%, respectively, in identifying major bleeding, and it outperformed the previously developed clinical models in terms of …

From Forearm to Wrist: Deep Learning for Surface Electromyography-Based Gesture Recognition.

Though the forearm is the focus of the prostheses, myoelectric control with the electrodes on the wrist is more comfortable for general consumers because of its unobtrusiveness and incorporation with the existing wrist-based wearables. Recently, deep learning methods have gained attention for myoelectric control but their performance is unclear on wrist myoelectric signals. This study compared the gesture recognition performance of myoelectric signals from the wrist and forearm between a state-of-the-art method, TDLDA, and four deep learning models, including convolutional neural network (CNN)

Using rumination and activity data for early detection of anaplasmosis disease in dairy heifer calves.

Bovine anaplasmosis causes considerable economic losses in dairy cattle production systems worldwide, ranging from $300 million to $900 million annually. It is commonly detected through rectal temperature, blood smear microscopy, and packed cell volume (PCV). Such methodologies are laborious, costly, and difficult to systematically implement in large-scale operations. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (1) rumination and activity data collected by Hr-Tag sensors (SCR Engineers Ltd.) in heifer calves exposed to anaplasmosis; and (2) the predictive ability of recurrent neural networks…

The macaque IT cortex but not current artificial vision networks encode object position in perceptually aligned coordinates.

Efficient interaction with the visual world requires not only object identification but also localization of where objects are in space. While spatial ("where") processing has classically been attributed to dorsal stream pathways, recent work has shown that object position can also be decoded from ventral stream responses, including the inferior temporal (IT) cortex. However, because object position in these paradigms is coupled to pixel-based location, it has remained unclear whether ventral stream position signals are perceptually meaningful or instead reflect incidental inheritance from ret

Predictive and interpretable machine learning for COVID-19 resurgences: the role of SARS-CoV-2 variants in the post-pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: Traditional COVID-19 forecasting often misses the rapid dynamics of viral competition, limiting timely ublic health responses. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating SARS-CoV-2 variant data into recurrent neural networks, using an interpretable, data-driven approach to improve accuracy in the current pandemic phase. METHODS: We validated our approach on post-pandemic data (2022–2025) from New York City and the United Kingdom, integrating epidemiological time series with genomic surveillance of variants. We implemented and compared several neural network structures, with…

A Spatio-Temporal Ensemble Deep Learning Architecture for Real-Time Defect Detection during Laser Welding on Low Power Embedded Computing Boards.

In modern production environments, advanced and intelligent process monitoring strategies are required to enable an unambiguous diagnosis of the process situation and thus of the final component quality. In addition, the ability to recognize the current state of product quality in real-time is an important prerequisite for autonomous and self-improving manufacturing systems. To address these needs, this study investigates a novel ensemble deep learning architecture based on convolutional neural networks (CNN), gated recurrent units (GRU) combined with high-performance classification algorithms

Systematic image perturbations reveal persistent gaps between human and machine vision.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are promising computational models for understanding visual object recognition. Yet, whether DNNs use similar visual cues for object recognition as humans do remains unknown. We created an image set that systematically untangles global shape, internal parts, and texture information, and compared human recognition behavior against >200 DNNs spanning diverse architectures, training diets, and training objectives. No DNNs replicated humans' cue-reliance profile, including those with recurrence or specialized training. Fine-tuned text-image contrastive-trained models, r

A streaming brain-to-voice neuroprosthesis to restore naturalistic communication.

Natural spoken communication happens instantaneously. Speech delays longer than a few seconds can disrupt the natural flow of conversation. This makes it difficult for individuals with paralysis to participate in meaningful dialogue, potentially leading to feelings of isolation and frustration. Here we used high-density surface recordings of the speech sensorimotor cortex in a clinical trial participant with severe paralysis and anarthria to drive a continuously streaming naturalistic speech synthesizer. We designed and used deep learning recurrent neural network transducer models to achieve o

Machine learning in diagnosis and disability prediction of multiple sclerosis using optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system, especially the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. Diagnosis of this disease is a very complex process and generally requires a lot of time. In addition, treatments are applied without any information on the disability course in each MS patient. For these two reasons, the objective of this study was to improve the MS diagnosis and predict the long-term course of disability in MS patients based on clinical data and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, measured by optical coherence

The ventral visual pathway: an expanded neural framework for the processing of object quality.

Since the original characterization of the ventral visual pathway, our knowledge of its neuroanatomy, functional properties, and extrinsic targets has grown considerably. Here we synthesize this recent evidence and propose that the ventral pathway is best understood as a recurrent occipitotemporal network containing neural representations of object quality both utilized and constrained by at least six distinct cortical and subcortical systems. Each system serves its own specialized behavioral, cognitive, or affective function, collectively providing the raison d'être for the ventral visual pat

Spontaneous activation of cortical somatosensory networks depresses their excitability in preterm human neonates.

The cortical activity of preterm human infants is highly discontinuous, comprising transient high-amplitude bursts separated by periods of relative quiescence. While the functional significance of these bursts is well established, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This burst-quiescence pattern could arise from a transient refractoriness within excitatory recurrent cortical networks following spontaneous activation. To assess this possibility, we tested whether such activation is followed by a transient reduction in excitability by evaluating whether externally evoked tactile responses

Deep learning-based characterization of neutrophil activation phenotypes in ex vivo human Candida blood infections.

Early identification of human pathogens is crucial for the effective treatment of bloodstream infections to prevent sepsis. Since pathogens that are present in small numbers are usually difficult to detect directly, we hypothesize that the behavior of the immune cells that are present in large numbers may provide indirect evidence about the causative pathogen of the infection. We previously applied time-lapse microscopy to observe that neutrophils isolated from human whole-blood samples, which had been infected with the human-pathogenic fungus Candida albicans or C. glabrata, indeed exhibited

Intravenous esketamine leads to an increase in impulsive and suicidal behaviour in a patient with recurrent major depression and borderline personality disorder.

Objectives: As clinical studies demonstrated that ketamine possesses rapid-acting antidepressant and antisuicidal effects, it is increasingly used in affective disorders. The neuroplastic properties of ketamine are well described in preclinical and imaging studies, and are highly related to its antidepressive mechanism of action. Methods: Here, we report on a female patient with recurrent major depression and borderline personality disorder (BPD) who was treated with intravenous (i.v.) esketamine as rapid-acting augmentation therapy to improve severe and acute depressive symptoms and suicidal b
