Physicochemical properties of raw potato starch and its protective effect on bone quality in meat ducks with enteritis.

Compromised bone quality predisposes domesticated birds to fractures in meat ducks, leading to pain and bad welfare. As a fermentable type II resistant starch, raw potato starch (RPS) probably supports gut health and potentially mitigate this inflammatory bone loss. Accordingly, the physicochemical properties of RPS were characterized, and its protective effect on bone quality in meat ducks were evaluated in the present study. The outcomes from electron microscope and X-ray diffraction showed that RPS possessed a round or oval granules with a smooth surface and a B-type crystalline structure. …

Visual marker-assisted gene editing of MLO confers powdery mildew resistance in Nicotiana alata.

Nicotiana alata is a high-value floricultural crop, but its widely cultivated commercial cultivar 'Jasmine' is highly susceptible to powdery mildew under low-light indoor conditions. This susceptibility results in leaf mold, yellowing, and wilting, along with a sharp decline in ornamental value. To address this issue and reduce fungicide reliance, we developed the first gene-editing system for N. alata featuring antibiotic marker-free visual identification. This system employs dual-visual markers for rapid positive screening using anthocyanin accumulation to indicate successful transformation

Induced resistance to black spot disease through exogenous application of arachidonic acid in Brassica juncea.

Black spot disease is an important disease infected by Alternaria brassicicola, which seriously affects the yield and quality of Brassica juncea. Arachidonic acid (ARA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid, induces the defense response of plants against pathogens. Here, we analyzed the induced resistance effect of ARA against black spot disease, and further revealed the underlying mechanism via physiological and transcriptome analyses. Treatment with 10 μM ARA exhibited the strongest resistance induction, dramatically improving the activities of defense enzymes (laccase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase,

Stbd1 stimulates AMPK signaling and alleviates insulin resistance in an in vitro hepatocyte model.

Starch-binding domain-containing protein 1 (Stbd1) is a glycogen-binding protein which localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane and ER-mitochondria contact sites (ERMCs). The protein undergoes N-myristoylation, which is a major determinant of its subcellular targeting. Stbd1 has been implicated in the control of glucose homeostasis, as evidenced by the finding that mice with targeted inactivation of Stbd1 display insulin resistance associated with increased ERMCs in the liver. In the present study, we addressed the effects of increased Stbd1 expression levels on insulin signaling.

Hierarchical porous bio-composites derived from durian peel fiber: From matrix-encapsulated to congested networks for advanced acoustic attenuation.

Valorization of agricultural residues addresses dual sustainability challenges: waste reduction and petroleum alternative development. This study demonstrates processing-controlled synthesis of acoustically functional bio-composites from durian peel fiber (DPF) combined with cassava starch binder. Composites were prepared at six DPF loadings (10-60 wt%) and evaluated for porosity, acoustic attenuation, physical, flexural, and thermal properties, moisture resistance, and biodegradability. Increasing fiber content produced a morphological transition from matrix-encapsulated (CDF10) to DPF-networ

Starch-based biodegradable active intelligent packaging with color superimposition via emulsion electrospinning nanofiber for meat freshness monitoring and shelf-life extension.

Developing sustainable and multifunctional intelligent packaging systems has emerged as a highly promising approach to reducing plastic pollution, minimizing food waste, and enhancing food safety. In this research, a biodegradable intelligent active packaging with a dual pH-responsive system was created by incorporating fat-soluble curcumin (CUR) and water-soluble roselle anthocyanins (RSA) into core and shell, respectively, of starch-based fibers using emulsion electrospinning. Octenyl succinic anhydride starch/polyvinyl alcohol complexes functioned as both fiber wall materials and emulsifier

Infrared heating modified rheological behavior of pea flour to enhance expansion in extruded puffed snacks.

Peas are gaining attention as nutritious and sustainable grains for the snack industry. However, the high protein and dietary fiber contents of pea flour (PF) often limit its expansion during extrusion, resulting in dense products with suboptimal texture. This study investigated infrared (IR) heating as an effective thermal treatment to improve the performance of PF in extruded snack production. After tempering to 24%-25% moisture for 24 and 48 h, pea seeds were subjected to IR heating to reach a surface temperature of 125 °C-130 °C. After milling, the resulting flours were characterized for c

Carbon nanodots as molecular scaffolds for development of antimicrobial agents.

We report the potential of carbon nanodots (CNDs) as a molecular scaffold for enhancing the antimicrobial activities of small dendritic poly(amidoamines) (PAMAM). Carbon nanodots prepared from sago starch are readily functionalized with PAMAM by using N-ethyl-N'-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). Electron microscopy images of these polyaminated CNDs show that they are approximately 30-60nm in diameter. Infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses of the water-soluble material established the presence of the polyamidoaminated moiety and th

MdLYK7 enhances resistance to Valsa canker by activating salicylic acid signaling and PbeBGLU12-mediated fungal cell wall stress.

Valsa canker, caused by necrotrophic fungi in genus Valsa, is a devastating disease that threatens apple and pear production in China and other regions of East Asia. Receptor-like kinases (RLKs) play crucial roles in pathogen signal perception and the initiation of immune responses. However, key members of RLKs contribute to Valsa canker resistance and potential functions remain largely elusive. In this study, we identified a Malus domestica lysin-motif RLK gene, MdLYK7, whose overexpression substantially enhanced the Valsa canker resistance in apple and pear fruits and in suspension cells of

Dietary carbohydrates: Pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets to obesity-associated metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common feature in obesity, comprising a cluster of abnormalities including abdominal fat accumulation, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, leading to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Intake of carbohydrates (CHO), particularly a sugary diet that rapidly increases blood glucose, triglycerides, and blood pressure levels is the predominant determining factor of MetS. Complex CHO, on the other hand, are a stable source of energy taking a longer time to digest. In particular, resistant starch (RS) or soluble fiber is an excellen…
