Plasma bile acids show a positive correlation with body mass index and are negatively associated with cognitive restraint of eating in obese patients.

Bile acids may be involved in the regulation of food intake and energy metabolism. The aim of the study was to investigate the association of plasma bile acids with body mass index (BMI) and the possible involvement of circulating bile acids in the modulation of physical activity and eating behavior. Blood was obtained in a group of hospitalized patients with normal weight (BMI 18.5-25 kg/m(2)), underweight (anorexia nervosa, BMI < 17.5 kg/m(2)) and overweight (obesity with BMI 30-40, 40-50 and >50 kg/m(2), n = 14-15/group) and plasma bile acid concentrations assessed. Physical activity and pl

Exploring restrictive practices in inpatient eating disorder services: a scoping review.

Restrictive practices (RPs) encompass interventions that limit an individual's freedom, such as restraint, seclusion, and enforced treatment. While widely studied in acute mental health settings, their use within inpatient eating disorder services remains underexplored despite evidence of high prevalence. In addition to these formal restrictive interventions, eating disorder inpatient wards commonly employ structured behavioural rules as part of nutritional rehabilitation programs, including enforced rest periods, supervised meals, locked bathrooms, and limits on fluids or activity. A scoping

Strength limitations to proper child safety seat installation: implications for child safety.

A majority of child safety restraints are misused in some manner, often leading to an increased risk of serious injury or death. It is possible that at least some instances of misuse are the result of biomechanical limitations during the installation process. Twenty-seven adult participants were trained and then monitored in three stages of child safety seat installation. All installations were done with an identical restraint system in the rear bench seat of a mocked-up minivan. EMG of 10 muscles, as well as trunk, shoulder, and wrist postures were analyzed. Peak maximum efforts were often re

Personality features of women with good outcome from restricting anorexia nervosa.

Personality characteristics were assessed in women who had physically and, in the majority, psychologically recovered from restricting anorexia nervosa at an 8- to 10-year follow-up. Personality dimensions were evaluated using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, the California Personality Inventory, and the Reid-Ware Scale. Women who had recovered from anorexia nervosa rated higher on risk avoidance, displayed greater restraint in emotional expression and initiative, and showed greater conformance to authority than age-matched normal women. On comparison with their sisters, the rec

C1 neurons mediate a stress-induced anti-inflammatory reflex in mice.

C1 neurons, located in the medulla oblongata, mediate adaptive autonomic responses to physical stressors (for example, hypotension, hemorrhage and presence of lipopolysaccharides). We describe here a powerful anti-inflammatory effect of restraint stress, mediated by C1 neurons: protection against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury. Restraint stress or optogenetic C1 neuron (C1) stimulation (10 min) protected mice from ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). The protection was reproduced by injecting splenic T cells that had been preincubated with noradrenaline or splenocytes harvested from stressed

Training large macaws for artificial insemination procedures.

For some endangered parrot species, captive breeding may be the only insurance for their survival. However, many individuals in captivity do not reproduce. Artificial insemination (AI) may help overcome reproductive failures or geographic distance. For semen collection in birds, massage is the most commonly used method. However, this process, which usually requires capture and restraint, involves risk of stress and injuries. The aim of this experiment was to train large macaws to accept the physical manipulations of their body parts needed for the artificial insemination process. Within 15 wee

Impact of Acute and Chronic Stressors on the Morphofunctional Characteristics of Long Bones in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats: A Pilot Study Using Histological and Microtomographic Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular diseases and is often intensified by psychological stress, which can also affect bone metabolism. Although both conditions independently compromise bone health, their combined impact-particularly under acute and chronic stress-remains unclear. This pilot study aimed to assess the effects of such stressors on bone structure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Methods: Forty male rats, both normotensive and SHRs, were randomly assigned to control, acute stress, or chronic stress groups. Acute stress involves a si

Major gastroenteric injuries from blunt trauma.

Hollow visceral injuries are far less common in blunt abdominal trauma than in penetrating abdominal trauma. From 1982 through 1993 we treated 50 patients with 57 major blunt injuries to the gut, defined as perforation, transection, or devascularization. Thirty-two patients (64%) were injured in motor vehicle collisions. Of these, 29 wore no restraints; three were wearing lap belts (none wore lap-shoulder restraints). Mean injury Severity Score (ISS) in patients wearing lap belts was 13.3, compared with 28.6 in the 29 patients who were not using restraint devices (P < 0.01). Small bowel perfor

Neuromediators in aging and gastric mucosal injury.

The hypothesis that the improvement of neurochemical changes involving the brain dopaminergic and cholinergic systems in aged rats may be related to the their capacity of coping with stress has been investigated by testing the effect of various dopaminergic and cholinergic drugs on stress-induced gastric ulcer development. The model of cold-plus-restraint stress induced gastric lesions has been used in Sprague-Dawley rats aged 24 months, compared to young animals aged 2 months. An increased incidence of gastric ulcers was found in old animals. When these animals were treated with cholinergic o

Race/Ethnicity as a Moderator of the Association Between Weight-Related Abuse and Disordered Eating.

OBJECTIVES: Extant research supports a positive relationship between weight-related abuse (WRA) and disordered eating constructs. Individuals who face marginalization and who are more likely to live in larger bodies, such as Black and Hispanic individuals in the United States (U.S.), may be at a heightened risk of WRA. This study is aimed at understanding whether the relationship between WRA and disordered eating constructs varies by race/ethnicity. We hypothesized that individuals from marginalized backgrounds would have differential levels of dietary restraint, body dissatisfaction, and shap

Arrest-related death on the basis of a drug-induced excited delirium syndrome.

AIMS: In typical arrest-related death (ARD) scenarios, the victims often show signs of excited delirium syndrome (ExDS), intoxication, exhaustion and/or suffered from a preexisting physical or psychiatrical condition, all of which could have caused or at least triggered the person's death. Since autopsy findings are very rare in such cases, a clear clinicopathologic diagnosis and thus mechanism of death is rarely found. METHODS: We present a case of a 25-year old woman, who died while being arrested by the police. Based on the patient's medical history, autopsy findings, contradicting witness

Prevalence and Predictors of Mechanical Restraint in Involuntary Patients in an Open-Door Inpatient Psychiatric Unit.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical restraint (MR) remains one of the most controversial interventions in psychiatry, particularly in involuntarily admitted patients. This study examined the prevalence and clinical predictors of MR in an open-door psychiatric unit in Spain, a context where national MR rates remain among the highest in Europe. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study of all involuntarily admitted patients (n = 81) was conducted in a 20-bed open-door acute psychiatric unit between June and December 2024. Sociodemographic, diagnostic, and treatment variables were extracted from electronic

High-sensitivity Cardiac Troponin I Changes Following Subcutaneous Needle Puncture, Restraint, and Venipuncture in Cynomolgus Monkeys.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a sensitive biomarker of myocardial injury in which procedure-related stress may cause mild, non-injury-related increases. This study aimed to characterize procedure-related variability of high-sensitivity cTnI and related biomarkers in cynomolgus monkeys and to compare a single molecule counting (SMC) assay with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five male cynomolgus monkeys received subcutaneous physiological saline (2 ml/kg). Blood was collected under restraint at 0 (baseline), 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 24 h. cTnI wa

Effect of resveratrol on the renal cell morphology in acute restraint stress-induced male adult Wistar albino rat model, a pilot study.

PURPOSE: The goal was to observe the microscopic picture of the kidney in acute restraint stress-induced male adult Wistar albino rat model and to study the beneficial effect of resveratrol (RSV) on it. METHODS: The rats were divided into three groups of six animals each, including control, experimental, and treatment groups. Stress was induced by keeping the rats immobilized in a rigid opaque plastic cylinder for 2 weeks, which restrained their movements. The treatment group received RSV orally 10 mg/kg body weight for two more weeks after the initial 2-week period of stress induction. The E

Protective effect of alpha-ketoglutarate against water-immersion restraint stress-induced gastric mucosal damage in mice.

Gastric lesions have several aetiologies, among which stress is the most prominent. Therefore, identification of new therapies to prevent stress is of considerable importance. Alpha-ketoglutarate (α-kg) several beneficial effects and has shown promise in combating oxidative stress, inflammation, and premature aging. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of α-kg in a gastric damage model by water-immersion restraint stress (WIRS). Pretreatment with α-kg decreased stress-related histopathological scores of tissue oedema, cell loss, and inflammatory infiltration. The α-kg resto

Body surface temperature of rats reveals both magnitude and sex differences in the acute stress response.

Understanding how biological markers of stress relate to stressor magnitude is much needed and can be used in welfare assessment. Changes in body surface temperature can be measured using infrared thermography (IRT) as a marker of a physiological response to acute stress. While an avian study has shown that changes in body surface temperature can reflect the intensity of acute stress, little is known about surface temperature responses to stressors of different magnitudes and its sex-specificity in mammals, and how they correlate with hormonal and behavioural responses. We used IRT to collect
