A retrospective study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma ureolyticum, and Mycoplasma sp in patients with suspected genital infection, and to assess the efficacy of doxycycline and other current antibiotic therapies. Over a three-year period, 1,048 records of patients (64% female; 36% male) were reviewed. C trachomatis, U ureolyticum, or Mycoplasma hominis was found in 39% of the men and 49% of the women. Thirteen consecutive patients presenting with squamous cell carcinoma in the postcricoid region (PCC) are studied and details of their age, sex, TNM status, treatment and results are analysed. T3 and T4 lesions of the larynx were reviewed and the five year survival figures compared for radiotherapy, surgery, and combined therapy. Glottic T3N0M0 lesions gave an acceptable five year survival figure of 66 per cent. Radiotherapy is advised as the modality of treatment for T3N0M0 lesions. Larger glottic and supraglottic lesions responded poorly to all modalities of treatment and a more aggressive treatment policy may be advisable.

Congenital posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia continues to be associated with a high mortality from ventilatory failure. To evaluate the malformation and factors associated with survival, 43 children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia seen in the neonatal period were studied; 20 survived. The male:female ratio was 2.1. No consistent antenatal factors could be implicated, and, except for intestinal malrotation and lung hypoplasia, associated anomalies were uncommon. The results are described of a retrospective study of 142 patients with atresias of the jejunum, ileum and colon in the Netherlands. It is pointed out that pregnancy had often been complicated by polyhydramnios. This may lead to an early diagnosis in the prenatal period. Whenever a neonate presents with bilious vomiting or distension of the abdomen, closer examination for intestinal atresia should take place. The production of meconium does not rule out the diagnosis of intestinal atresia.

On the basis of a study of 193 patients with localized melanoma followed for 25 years, it appears that such tumors are curable, in about 75% of the cases, by surgical removal alone. Of the 41 patients who died from this tumor, 92% succumbed during the first decade and the rest during the next five years. There were no deaths due to melanoma after 15 years of observation. Hypothyroidism, defined as a serum concentration of less than 70 ng of triiodothyronine (T3)/dl or less than 1.5 microgram of thyroxine (T4)/dl, or both, was diagnosed in 108 dogs by means of radioimmunoassay techniques.
