Psychometric validation of the rhinitis control assessment test: a brief patient-completed instrument for evaluating rhinitis symptom control.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is common, but a validated tool for comprehensive assessment of disease control is not available. OBJECTIVE: To develop a simple patient-completed instrument (the Rhinitis Control Assessment Test [RCAT]) to help detect problems with control of rhinitis symptoms. METHODS: During a visit to an allergy specialist, 410 patients with allergic rhinitis completed a Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) assessment and the 26-item developmental RCAT. Physicians also completed a global assessment of rhinitis symptom control for each patient. RESULTS: Stepwise regression metho…

[Treatment of allergic rhinitis in the biologics era].

Objective:Allergic rhinitis(AR) is a major chronic disease that severely affects human health. The primary objective of current treatment modalities is symptom relief, yet patients often exhibit poor adherence to long-term therapy with suboptimal efficacy outcomes. Since the 1990 s, monoclonal antibodies targeting key cytokines and their receptors in type 2 inflammatory responses have been employed to treat type 2 inflammatory diseases such as AR. Clinical studies have demonstrated that omalizumab, dupilumab, and stapokibart are effective in treating seasonal AR. In 2025, stapokibart was appro…

Preliminary Study of Microplastic in Allergic Rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics are widespread in nature and have been detected in various human tissues and organs. They are thought to contribute to the occurrence and development of various diseases. OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationship between microplastic exposure and allergic rhinitis (AR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three patients with AR and 22 individuals in the control group were included in this study. All the participants completed the total nasal symptom score (TNSS) and nasal irrigation. The nasal irrigation solution was under microplastic analysis. RESULTS: There were no sign…

Pathogenesis and Key Cells in Allergic Rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, with prevalence rates as high as 50% in high-income countries. Patients with AR often have symptoms such as runny nose, itchy nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and signs of edema and pallor of the nasal mucosa, and these pathologies have a major impact on the patient's learning, sleep, and quality of life, often resulting in significant pain and a huge economic burden for the patient. SUMMARY: Among the current treatments for AR, immunotherapy is able to achieve satisfactory clinical outcomes. This shows …

Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis in Clinical Practice.

Allergic rhinitis is a prevalent condition among children, with its occurrence reaching up to 40% of the general population in some geographical areas. A type 2 immunity sustains allergic rhinitis. Consequently, type 2 inflammation leads to eosinophilic infiltrate of the nasal mucosa. Allergic inflammation causes the symptom occurrence. Typical nasal symptoms include nasal itching, sneezing, watery rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion. Nasal congestion depends on vasodilation and increased mucus production. These conditions result in nasal obstruction. Nasal obstruction is closely associated with …

A Clinical Approach of Allergic Rhinitis in Children.

Allergic rhinitis is an important disease with a global footprint and a growing prevalence, affecting children and adults. Although it is commonly under-diagnosed and under-treated, it causes important social and economic effects (diminished quality of life, poor academic performance, escalated medical visits, heightened medication usage, and effects in other chronic conditions, e.g., asthma). It is characterized by distinctive, easily identifiable symptoms (sneezing, nasal discharge, nasal congestion, nasal-eye-palatal itching) and indirect accompanying indicators (fatigue and decreased schoo…

Diagnosis and Treatment of Local Allergic Rhinitis.

Some patients with chronic rhinitis have a positive nasal allergen provocation test (NAPT) without systemic IgE sensitization by skin prick tests or serum allergen-specific IgE (sIgE). This novel concept is called local allergic rhinitis (LAR) and affects children and adults worldwide, but is underdiagnosed. LAR is not just the initial state of allergic rhinitis (AR), it is a unique form of chronic rhinitis that is neither classical AR nor non-AR. Many of the features of AR and LAR are similar, such as a positive NAPT, positive type 2 inflammatory markers, including the nasal discharge of sIgE…

Progression of Rhinitis to Rhinosinusitis: A Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic rhinitis (CR) and rhinosinusitis are prevalent conditions affecting people all over the world. Their exact relationship is still not fully understood. We sought to find out, whether CR is a risk factor for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and which main subgroup or other factors could be predisposing. METHODS: Patients with diagnosed CR between 2005 and 2010 were selected from the electronic medical record and were contacted by phone call. They were interviewed and screened for possible CRS using internationally approved questionnaires, e.g. NOSE-D and SNOT-20-GAV. Those wit…

The role of the fern test in the treatment of rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: The fern test is a method for assessing the characteristics of the nasal section in the treatment of patients with mucous dysfunction of the airway. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the fern test in patients with rhinitis and to assess the classification of each type of rhinitis (types I-IV) in clinical practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional study, which included consecutive patients from a third level Rhinology Unit, worked with 182 patients with rhinitis and 30 healthy subjects as control. The patients were subdivided according to their type of rhin…

Diagnosis and Management of Allergic Rhinitis in Children.

Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common chronic diseases managed by pediatricians. It can result in a significant burden of disease for the patient and their family. This article reviews classification of this condition as well as its pathophysiology, mediated by a Th2 lymphocyte response. Methods of diagnosis via elicitation of a thorough history, focused physical examination, and testing for specific allergen sensitization are discussed. Treatment of this condition is examined, focusing on allergen avoidance and a variety of available pharmacotherapies. Finally, allergen immunotherapy mo…

Mycotic Rhinitis and Sinusitis in Florida Horses.

Rhinitis and sinusitis caused by fungal pathogens were studied in biopsy samples submitted from 52 horses distributed throughout subtropical and tropical regions of Florida. Methods included routine histopathology as well as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with panfungal/panoomycete primers and DNA sequencing on extracted DNA (DNA barcoding). Granulomatous, pyogranulomatous, and fibrinopurulent lesions in nasal and sinus mucosa were associated with signs of upper airway obstruction and noise as well as nasal discharge. Morphologic and histochemical assessment of cases identified 31 cases of zy…

Management of Rhinitis Medicamentosa: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Rhinitis medicamentosa (RM) is a common condition resulting from overuse of topical nasal decongestants. Despite the prevalence in otolaryngologic practice, a clear treatment protocol has not been established. Our objective was to review the current published literature pertaining to the treatment of RM with the possibility of finding data that support one treatment over another. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases were examined for patients diagnosed with RM resulting from chronic use of topical nasal decongestants. REVIEW METHODS: The PRISMA stan…
