Immediate efficacy and persistent speed of kill of a novel oral formulation of afoxolaner (NexGardTM) against induced infestations with Ixodes ricinus ticks.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are hematophageous arthropods that transmit a wide spectrum of pathogens to human and animals. The ability of an acaricidal product to kill ticks quickly provides an important added benefit, especially as protecting dogs from tick bites remains the best preventive measure against tick-borne diseases. The speed of kill of afoxolaner in a novel soft chewable formulation (NexGardTM) against induced infestations with Ixodes ricinus adult ticks was evaluated during a full-month negative controlled and blinded study following a single oral administration. METHODS: 12 healthy beagl…

Anaplasmataceae and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in the sand lizard Lacerta agilis and co-infection of these bacteria in hosted Ixodes ricinus ticks.

BACKGROUND: Anaplasmataceae and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. are important tick-borne bacteria maintained in nature by transmission between ticks and vertebrate hosts. However, the potential role of lizards as hosts has not been sufficiently studied. RESULTS: The current study showed that 23 of 171 examined sand lizards Lacerta agilis were PCR positive for Anaplasmataceae. The nucleotide sequences of the several selected PCR products showed 100% homology with Anaplasma spp. found in Ixodes ricinus collected in Tunisia and Morocco (AY672415 - AY672420). 1.2% of lizard collar scale samples were PC…

Relative importance of Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes trianguliceps as vectors for Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti in field vole (Microtus agrestis) populations.

The importance of Ixodes ricinus in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens is well recognized in the United Kingdom and across Europe. However, the role of coexisting Ixodes species, such as the widely distributed species Ixodes trianguliceps, as alternative vectors for these pathogens has received little attention. This study aimed to assess the relative importance of I. ricinus and I. trianguliceps in the transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti among United Kingdom field voles (Microtus agrestis), which serve as reservoir hosts for both pathogens. While all instars of…

Diversity of the population of Tick-borne encephalitis virus infecting Ixodes ricinus ticks in an endemic area of central Switzerland (Canton Bern).

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a member of the genus Flavivirus, has a positive-strand RNA genome containing a single open reading frame flanked by non-coding regions (NCRs). Ixodes ricinus ticks (n = 307) were collected from vegetation in a natural TBEV focus in Belp, Switzerland. The presence and identity of the virus were determined by nested RT-PCR followed by sequencing of the 5'-terminal region that comprises the 5' NCR and the capsid-encoding region (C). The presence of the western European TBEV subtype (W-TBEV) genome was detected in 14.3 % of the ticks. Nucleotide sequence anal…

Nitric Oxide Supplementation Can Improve the Phytoremediation Potential of Ricinus communis by Regulating the Antioxidant Functioning, Redox Components, and Metal Accumulation.

Potential of exogenously applied nitric oxide (NO; 50 and 100 μM) in improving the tolerance of Ricinus communis to nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As) stress. Applied NO alleviated the decline in growth, chlorophyll and carotenoids, glutamate 1-semialdehyde, and δ-amino levulinic acid, and the activity of δ-amino levulinic acid dehydratase and Rubisco. The oxidative stress parameters, like hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation, and the activity of chlorophyllase, protease, and NADPH oxidase, were substantially reduced in NO-treated plants. NO promoted osmolyte accumulation and enhanced t…

Predicting and mapping human risk of exposure to Ixodes ricinus nymphs using climatic and environmental data, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, 2016.

BackgroundTick-borne diseases have become increasingly common in recent decades and present a health problem in many parts of Europe. Control and prevention of these diseases require a better understanding of vector distribution.AimOur aim was to create a model able to predict the distribution of Ixodes ricinus nymphs in southern Scandinavia and to assess how this relates to risk of human exposure.MethodsWe measured the presence of I. ricinus tick nymphs at 159 stratified random lowland forest and meadow sites in Denmark, Norway and Sweden by dragging 400 m transects from August to September 2…

Old health risks in new places? An ecological niche model for I. ricinus tick distribution in Europe under a changing climate.

Climate change will likely have impacts on disease vector distribution. Posing a significant health threat in the 21st century, risk of tick-borne diseases may increase with higher annual mean temperatures and changes in precipitation. We modeled the current and future potential distribution of the Ixodes ricinus tick species in Europe. The Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Prediction (GARP) was utilized to predict potential distributions of I. ricinus based on current (1990-2010 averages) and future (2040-2060 averages) environmental variables. A ten model best subset was created out of a possib…

Prevalences of tick-borne encephalitis virus and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus populations of the Rhine-Main region, Germany.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis are the most common tick-borne zooanthroponoses in Germany. The federal risk map for TBE in this country is based on recorded cases of human infection, whereas information on the vector-based prevalence of either pathogen is fragmentary. In this study, a total of 12,497 host-seeking nymphal and adult Ixodes ricinus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) were collected from March to October 2009 and April to June 2010, in 5 TBE non-risk and 4 TBE risk areas of the Rhine-Main region (Hesse) via flagging. A total of 3615 ticks was examined for infection with Bo…

Tick infestation risk and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. infection-induced increase in host-finding efficacy of female Ixodes ricinus under natural conditions.

An investigation of the risk of human tick infestation, together with the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. infection, was conducted in a sylvatic habitat in western Germany to provide data needed for future risk-benefit evaluations of acaricides used for clothing impregnation. Additionally, data were collected on behavioural changes in Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.-infected adult female I. ricinus ticks and the possible impact of such changes on host-finding efficacy. The risk of I. ricinus-infestation was determined by collecting from the protective clothing of volunteers and by dragging i…

Detection and molecular typing of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks and in different patient samples from southwest Germany.

The prevalence of different genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in infected ticks could be a determinant for the risk of acquiring Lyme borreliosis (LB) and its clinical presentation. A total of 7373 ticks and 2761 samples from LB patients from the same area in southwest Germany were analyzed by PCR to assess the frequency of the occurrence of LB-associated genospecies. Fifteen percent of the tick samples and 19% of the human samples were found positive for the presence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato. Further identification of 1106 B. burgdorferi sensu lato positive tick samples by re

A Deep Learning Approach for Classifying Developmental Stages of Ixodes ricinus Ticks on Images Captured Using a Microscope's High-Resolution CMOS Sensor.

This article presents a deep learning approach for classifying the developmental stages (larvae, nymphs, adult females, and adult males) of Ixodes ricinus ticks, the most common tick species in Europe and a major vector of tick-borne pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). Each developmental stage plays a different role in disease transmission, with nymphs considered the most epidemiologically relevant stage due to their small size and high prevalence. We developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model trained on a da…
