tDCS to the left DLPFC modulates cognitive and physiological correlates of executive function in a state-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: The use of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to study anatomical and physiological dynamics and circuits supporting cognition and executive functions in particular has dramatically increased in recent years. However, its mechanisms of action remain only partially understood. OBJECTIVE: In this study we assess the cognitive and physiological effects of anodal tDCS to the DLPFC on executive function in order to understand (1) the role of DLPFC laterality, (2) the physiological dynamics sustaining the modulation of executive function by tDCS, and (3) the impact of state-

The relationship between work-family conflict, stress and depression among Chinese correctional officers: a mediation and network analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have found that depression is prevalent among correctional officers (COs), which may be related to the work-family conflict (WFC) faced by this cohort. Role conflict theory posits that WFC emerges from the incompatibility between the demands of work and family roles, which induces stress and, in turn, results in emotional problems. Thus, this study seeks to investigate the association between WFC and depression, along with examining the mediating role of stress. Further network analysis is applied to identify the core and bridge symptoms within the network of WFC, …

Adaptive control in Stroop, Stroop-like, and Simon task types.

Adaptive control-the ability to modulate attention based on contextual demands-is typically assumed to be a domain-general cognitive function. The function's actual domain-generality, however, remains unclear, as confound-controlled evidence for adaptive control is presently limited to the interference tasks used to examine it (typically, Stroop tasks) and the stimuli used in those tasks (typically, words and colors). We addressed these limitations by conducting a systematic examination of adaptive control in the three main interference-task types in the cognitive-control literature (i.e., Str

Resilience to bullying victimization: the role of individual, family and peer characteristics.

Little research attention has been paid to bullied students who function better than expected and are therefore defined as "resilient". The present longitudinal study aimed to identify individual, family and peer factors that predict fewer than expected levels of depression and delinquency following experiences of bullying victimization. The sample consisted 3,136 adolescents. Self-report data were used to measure bullying victimization at age 13 and 14 and depression and delinquency at age 14. We examined the effects of gender, self-esteem, social alienation, parental conflict, sibling victim

The role of family experiences and ADHD in the early development of oppositional defiant disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the role of family experiences in the early development and maintenance of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in preschool-age children with behavior problems. METHOD: Participants were 199 3-year-old children with behavior problems who took part in 4 annual child and family assessments. RESULTS: Children with behavior problems who were exposed to overreactive parenting practices, maternal depression, marital conflict, and lower family income tended to have more ODD symptoms 3 years later. Moreover, initial changes in paternal overreactivity an

Social and professional support needs of families after perinatal loss.

Perinatal loss has been associated with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, suicide, marital conflict, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Nurses may provide professional support through teaching, role modeling, encouragement, counseling, problem solving, and other interventions. Nurses also may encourage more effective social support by helping significant others to provide willing, well-intentioned action that will produce a positive response in the bereaved couple. Interventions to increase professional and social support after perinatal loss are described.

How do programme directors perceive trainee attrition? A qualitative focus group study in three Dutch teaching hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: To gain insight into programme directors' (PDs') perceptions of trainee attrition from postgraduate medical education (PGME), focusing on interactions between stakeholders within the learning environment and roles of PDs in the process leading to attrition. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a focus group study with 27 PDs from three Dutch teaching hospitals and analysed transcripts using template analysis. RESULTS: PDs identified attrition as a multilevel problem, in which personal, workplace and system-bound factors play a role. PDs mentioned balancing professional a

The Role of Diet in Functional Dyspepsia Management.

Functional dyspepsia is a common functional gastrointestinal disease that is characterized by postprandial fullness, early satiation, epigastric pain, and/or epigastric burning. Eating a meal is a key factor in the occurrence of symptoms during functional dyspepsia, and patients frequently request dietary advice that could relieve these symptoms. Eating behaviors, irregular meal patterns, and moderate-to-fast eating rates are significantly associated with functional dyspepsia. The role of diet is complex; fat ingestion increases the occurrence of symptoms in dyspeptic patients, which might be

Early perinatal diagnosis of mothers at risk of developing post-partum depression--a concise guide for obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists and paediatricians.

OBJECTIVE: In this article, we tried to provide all those involved in perinatal medicine with a concise guide to detect mothers at risk of developing post-partum depression. Motherhood is a critical situation characterized by role conflicts because conflicts among the role of mother, worker and wife are the norm in the post-partum period and may jeopardize the mother's existence. METHODS: We have described a kind of personality that is at great risk of developing post-partum depression because of the incapacity to creatively manage situations of role conflict. This personality structure is ca…

Sirt2 inhibition improves gut epithelial barrier integrity and protects mice from colitis.

Sirt2 is a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent protein lysine deacylase that can remove both acetyl group and long-chain fatty acyl groups from lysine residues of many proteins. It was reported to affect inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) symptoms in a mouse model. However, conflicting roles were reported, with genetic knockout aggravating while pharmacological inhibition alleviating IBD symptoms. These seemingly conflicting reports cause confusion and deter further efforts in developing Sirt2 inhibitors as a potential treatment strategy for IBD. We investigated these conflicting

Perceptions of ganja and cocaine in urban Jamaica.

This article, based on ethnographic research, discusses the dynamic relationship between ganja (marijuana) and cocaine in five areas within Montego Bay, an urban-tourist center in Jamaica, West Indies. The focus is on the contrasting and conflicting social perceptions related to the current role of each substance in the society, as well as the interrelationship between these two substances. Of particular interest in the analysis of use and distribution patterns of each substance is the seemingly conflicting moral versus economic dilemma surrounding the drug trade; perceptions related to the ef

Mothers' and Fathers' Pregnancy Intentions and Interparental Conflict: Is There Harm in Ambivalency?

Unintended pregnancy represents a critical challenge for family well-being, especially among unmarried parents with low incomes who come from marginalized racial/ethnic backgrounds. This study examines the roles of both maternal and paternal pregnancy intendedness in interparental conflict and violence, focusing on a sample of racially diverse unmarried couples with low income from the Building Strong Families (BSF) project (N = 2,325 couples). Antenatal pregnancy intentions were tested as predictors of destructive conflict and intimate partner violence (IPV) at both 15 months and 3 years post

Impact of workplace conflicts and rivalry on low back and neck pain: a cross-sectional study from Latvia.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) and neck pain (NP) are major public health concerns and leading causes of disability worldwide. While workplace psychosocial factors have been identified as risk factors, the role of workplace conflicts and rivalry remains underexplored. This study examines the association between hierarchical workplace conflicts, rivalry, and the prevalence of LBP and NP among Latvian employees working with computers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the Work Conditions and Risks in Latvia 2019-2021 survey, which included 1,313 employees who worked

The new face of war: Craniofacial injuries from Operation Inherent Resolve.

BACKGROUND: During the last 20 years of conflict in the Middle East, improvements in body armor and the use of improvised explosive devices have resulted in an increased incidence of complex craniofacial trauma (CFT). Currently, CFT comprises up to 40% of all casualties. We present new data from the recent conflict in Iraq and Syria during Operation Inherent Resolve. METHODS: Data were collected for patients treated at role 1, role 2, and role 3 facilities in Iraq and Syria over a 1-year period. During this time, a specialized head & neck surgical augmentation team was deployed and colocated

The evolution of a placenta accelerates the evolution of postcopulatory reproductive isolation.

The evolution of placentation is predicted to intensify intergenomic conflicts between mothers and offspring over optimal levels of maternal investment by providing offspring opportunities to manipulate mothers into allocating more resources. Parent-offspring conflicts can result in the evolution of reproductive isolation among populations when conflicts resolve in different ways. Postzygotic reproductive isolation is hypothesized to evolve more rapidly following the evolution of placentation due to the predicted increase in conflict. We tested this hypothesis by performing interpopulation cro

eHealth literacy and decisional conflict in patients with coronary heart disease: chain mediation of cyberchondria and psychological inflexibility and a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality worldwide, and its management requires patients to make complex, preference-sensitive treatment decisions. Decisional conflict is common in this population and adversely affects treatment adherence and outcomes, yet its association with eHealth literacy and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between eHealth literacy and decisional conflict in patients with CHD, tested the chain-mediating roles of cyberchondria and psychological inflexibi

The smallpox ghost in Voltaire's life: inoculation and the origins of vaccine acceptance.

Smallpox shaped eighteenth-century debates on risk, trust, and prevention. Voltaire, marked by the disease throughout his life-the "smallpox ghost"-emerged as a prominent advocate of smallpox inoculation (variolation), a preventive practice that preceded Jennerian vaccination by several decades. Through his writings, he framed the practice as a conflict between empirical reasoning and social resistance. This Perspective examines his role in the early acceptance of preventive medicine and highlights its relevance for understanding contemporary challenges in vaccine acceptance.

Trajectories of family processes across the adolescent transition in youth with spina bifida.

The current study investigated change in family processes, including conflict, cohesion, and stress, across the adolescent transition, comparing the developmental trajectories of youth with and without spina bifida. Individual growth curve modeling procedures were utilized to describe the developmental course of family processes across 4 waves of data collection, from ages 9 to 15 years, and to test whether illness status (spina bifida vs. matched comparison group [N = 68 for both groups at Time 1]) would significantly predict individual variability in family processes. Families of origin of homeless and never-homeless women.

Naturalistic inquiry was used to compare the characteristics of families of origin of homeless women with never-homeless women. The women's experiences in their families of origin were explored during in-depth interviews using Lofland and Lofland's conceptions of meanings, practices, episodes, roles, and relationships to guide the analysis. The two groups were similar with respect to family abuse history, transience, and loss. The never-homeless women had support from an extended family member who provided unconditional love, protection, a sense of connection, and age-appropriate expectations,
