Taking Action or Thinking About It? State Orientation and Rumination Are Correlated in Athletes.

Athletic performance in competitive sports relies heavily on the ability to cope effectively with stressful situations. In contrast, some athletes report that their thoughts revolve around the future or past and not around the actual demands during competitions. In those specific stressful situations, the lack of focus like an unintended fixation on repetitive cognitions can have fatal consequences with regard to the performance. Especially when competitors are close in their athletic capabilities, differences in effectively coping with stress and mental stability may decide about winning and

Rumination and eating disorder psychopathology: A meta-analysis.

Rumination is a cognitive process involving repetitive thoughts about negative experiences and emotions and is associated with psychopathology. Rumination has been implicated in mood and anxiety disorders, and there is a growing body of research on rumination in relation to eating disorder (ED) psychopathology. The current meta-analytic review focused on the literature addressing rumination and ED psychopathology. A comprehensive search process identified 38 studies, which primarily used cross-sectional designs with non-clinical samples. Results demonstrated that rumination was concurrently (r

Neural substrates of rumination tendency in non-depressed individuals.

The tendency to ruminate, experienced by both healthy individuals and depressed patients, can be quantified by the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS). We hypothesized that brain activity associated with rumination tendency might not only occur at rest but also persist to some degree during a cognitive task. We correlated RRS with whole-brain fMRI data of 20 healthy subjects during rest and during a face categorization task with different levels of cognitive demands (easy or difficult conditions). Our results reveal that the more subjects tend to ruminate, the more they activate the left entorhina

The relationship between online self-disclosure and individual posttraumatic growth under public health emergencies: A moderated mediation model.

This study examined the relationship between online self-disclosure and posttraumatic growth (PTG) during public health emergencies, focusing on underlying mechanisms. A moderated mediation model was developed, incorporating deliberate rumination as a mediator and perceived positive feedback as a moderator. Data were collected from 559 college students using the COVID Stress Scale, Online Self-Disclosure Scale, Deliberate Rumination Scale, Perceived Positive Feedback Scale, and PTG Scale. Results showed that online self-disclosure directly and positively predicted PTG and indirectly influenced

Rumination as a common mechanism relating depressive risk factors to depression.

Rumination was examined as a potential common mechanism linking risk factors with depression. Initially nondepressed individuals (N = 137) were assessed for presence of a ruminative response style and 4 other hypothesized risk factors for depression. They were followed for 2.5 years. Negative cognitive styles, self-criticism, dependency, neediness, and history of past depression were all significantly associated with rumination. Rumination mediated the predictive relationships of all risk factors except dependency with the number of prospective Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disor

The impact of bullying victimization on non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of friendship quality.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent global public health concern among adolescents, with bullying victimization recognized as a key risk factor, while the underlying cognitive mechanisms and interpersonal protective factors remain understudied. This study aimed to investigate (1) the relationship between bullying victimization and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents, (2) the mediating role of rumination in the association between bullying victimization and NSSI, and (3) the moderating role of friendship quality in the relationship between rumination and NSSI. A sample of

Posttraumatic stress symptoms and rumination: the moderator effect of time.

The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and rumination (intrusive and deliberate) in individuals who experienced a traumatic event at different times. In particular, to better understand the possible mechanisms underlying the association between PTSS and rumination, the study aimed to explore whether the time since the traumatic event could serve as a moderator of the relationship between PTSS and rumination. To achieve this objective, 601 participants were recruited using a snowballing strategy and were asked to complete

When rumination counts: Perceived social support and heart rate variability in daily life.

Rumination and social support could modulate cardiac activity. Although both variables are somehow interrelated, they are often studied independently, and their interplay is seldom considered. We aimed to analyze the interaction of rumination and perceived social support on vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) in daily life. The sample consisted of 117 healthy participants (57% female, mean age = 27.9, SD = 5.5 years). Ambulatory HRV (root mean squared successive differences), respiration, body position, and body movements were recorded continuously on three consecutive weekdays. Mome

Exploring Sex Differences in the Relationship Between Emotion Regulation and Eating Disorders Symptoms During Early Adolescence.

Difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) have been consistently associated with eating disorders (EDs). However, little is known about how this association operates during early adolescence, and the specific influence of sex. Objectives: This study aims to assess if maladaptive ER strategies predict greater ED symptomatology, while adaptive strategies predict lower levels of EDs symptoms among early adolescents. Additionally, the moderating effect of sex will also be assessed in these associations. Method: Ninety-eight Spanish-speaking adolescents aged 12-15 years (55 girls, 43 boys) participat

Repetitive thought is associated with both subjectively and objectively recorded polysomnographic indices of disrupted sleep in insomnia disorder.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive thought is a hallmark of several psychopathological conditions and in particular a perpetuating and maintaining factor in Insomnia Disorder. Accordingly, one of the primary complaints reported by Insomnia patients is the inability to shut-off or control thoughts. Worry and rumination are the two best-known styles of repetitive thought leading to sleep disturbances. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of these two cognitive processes on nocturnal sleep indices objectively recorded by polysomnography. METHODS: 27 Insomnia patients and 20 healthy cont

Responses to affect subtypes differentially associate with anxious and depressive symptom severity.

Responses to affect include cognitive processes (i.e., perseverative vs. non-perseverative) and valence (i.e., modulation of positive vs. negative affect). However, little research has examined how the factor structure of responses to affect is defined along one or both of these dimensions. The present study conducted an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of items from assessments of repetitive negative thinking, rumination on positive affect (PA), and dampening. We also examined the associations between emergent factors and measures of depressive symptoms, social anxiety symptoms, and non-soci

Examining the role of cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance in predicting anxiety and depression.

OBJECTIVES: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) proposes that cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance are inter-related processes underpinning distress. This study investigated whether worry, rumination, and stressful life events on the one hand and anxiety and depression on the other hand were mediated by cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance (bidirectional serial association). DESIGN: A questionnaire design was conducted cross-sectionally in a clinical sample (study 1; N = 57) and cross-sectionally and longitudinally in a non-clinical student sample (study 2; N = 106 and N = 9

The effects of autobiographical memory flexibility (MemFlex) training: An uncontrolled trial in individuals in remission from depression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impaired cognitive processing is a key feature of depression. Biases in autobiographical memory retrieval (in favour of negative and over-general memories) directly impact depression symptoms, but also influence downstream cognitive factors implicated in the onset and maintenance of the disorder. We introduce a novel cognitive intervention, MemFlex, which aims to correct these biases in memory retrieval and thereby modify key downstream cognitive risk and maintenance factors: rumination, impaired problem solving, and cognitive avoidance. METHOD: Thirty eight adults

A Longitudinal 5-Year Follow-Up Study of Cognitive Function After First Episode Major Depressive Disorder: Exploring State, Scar and Trait Effects.

Major depression (MDD) is associated with cognitive deficits in processing speed and executive function (EF) following first episode (FE). It is unclear whether deficits are state or trait related. Studies following FE MDD over longer periods are lacking, making it uncertain how cognition and symptoms develop after the initial episode. The present study assessed cognitive function and symptoms 5 years following FE MDD. In addition, the study explored relationships between MDD symptoms, rumination, and cognitive deficits with regards to the trait, state, and scar perspective. Twenty-three parti

Maladaptive Rumination Mediates the Relationship between Self-Esteem, Perfectionism, and Work Addiction: A Largescale Survey Study.

Background: Empirical evidence suggests that low self-esteem and high perfectionism are significant personality correlates of work addiction, but the mechanisms underlying these relationships are still unclear. Consequently, exploring cognitive mechanisms will help to better understand work addiction. For instance, rumination is one of the under-researched topics in work addiction, although it may explain specific thinking processes of work-addicted individuals. The purpose of the study was to test the mediating role of maladaptive rumination (i.e., brooding) in the relationship between person

Self-compassion's impact on perceived stress and perseverative thinking as it relates to sleep quality among college students.

Self-compassion interventions have shown promise in improving sleep quality, but their effects have been modest, inviting more research into underlying mechanisms. This study examined whether perceived stress and perseverative thinking (rumination and worry) explain the link between self-compassion and sleep quality. A sample of 340 undergraduates completed validated measures of self-compassion, perceived stress, rumination, worry, and sleep quality. In simple mediation models, each cognitive-affective factor accounted for significant indirect associations. However, in a parallel mediation mod

Thinking about the past and future in daily life: an experience sampling study of individual differences in mental time travel.

Remembering the past and imagining the future are hallmarks of mental time travel. We provide evidence that such experiences are influenced by individual differences in temporal and affective biases in cognitive style, particularly brooding rumination (a negative past-oriented bias) and optimism (a positive future-oriented bias). Participants completed a 7-day, cellphone-based experience-sampling study of temporal orientation and mental imagery. Multilevel models showed that individual differences in brooding rumination predicted less vivid and positive past- and future-oriented thoughts, even

Posttraumatic growth within the first three months after accidental injury in China: the role of self-disclosure, cognitive processing, and psychosocial resources.

The primary goals of this study, were to identify the posttraumatic growth (PTG) level of accidentally injured Chinese patients shortly after an accident occurred and to determine whether cognitive processing, self-disclosure, and psychosocial resources predicted PTG. A total of 232 patients were recruited from two public hospitals in Shanghai within the first three months of an accidental injury. Patients completed self-report questionnaires to assess severity of injury, cognitive processing, self-disclosure, psychosocial resources, and PTG. Patients reported a mid-low level of PTG (M = 50.38

Pathways linking temperament and depressive symptoms: a short-term prospective diary study among adolescents.

The current study examined mechanisms through which trait negative affectivity (NA) and effortful control (EC) prospectively predict increases in depressive symptoms in a community sample of 110 adolescents (mean age=16.40 years) in a 9-week, multi-wave diary study. We hypothesised youth with high NA and low EC would experience greater increases in depressive symptoms because they generate more maladaptive cognitive responses to stress. NA predicted greater event-specific rumination and negative cognitive style across the study period. After controlling for trait cognitive vulnerabilities, onl
