Routine childhood vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella has virtually abolished virus-related morbidity and mortality. Notwithstanding this, we describe here devastating neurological complications associated with the detection of live-attenuated mumps virus Jeryl Lynn (MuVJL5) in the brain of a child who had undergone successful allogeneic transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). This is the first confirmed report of MuVJL5 associated with chronic encephalitis and highlights the need to exclude immunodeficient individuals from immunisation with live-attenuated vacc

Unconcentrated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 50 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were investigated by rocket immunoelectrophoresis (RIE) against anti-human IgG sera. Two patterns of immune precipitates were observed: precipitates with exclusively cathodal and precipitates with bipolar extension. Hemagglutination-inhibition tests against measles virus antigen were performed after absorption of the CSF samples with Protein A-containing Staphylococcus aureus and treatment with 2-mercaptoethanol. The results point to different pathological significances of the prec

The nucleotide sequences of nucleocapsid (N), phosphoprotein (P), matrix (M), fusion (F), and large protein (L) genes were partly determined for 19 wild strains of measles virus (MV) isolated over the past 10 years in Japan (nucleotide position N: 1301-1700, P: 1751-2190, M: 3571-4057, F: 6621-7210, L: 10381-11133) and also for a MV strain obtained from a patient with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) who had natural measles in 1980. The phylogenetic trees of these strains drawn for respective genes were very similar to each other and revealed that all the wild strains were classified

Dementia is a global health problem with a huge impact on the lives of those afflicted. There are several distinct diseases that are classified under the umbrella term "dementia" ranging from neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease to chronic infections of the central nervous system such as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare complication of measles virus infection in childhood. Clinical features, neuropsychological profiles and imaging characteristics of the various dementia syndromes can be sufficiently distinct to distinguish them from one another. However, in

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Measles virus has been implicated in the etiology of both inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is caused by atypical measles infection. This study investigated the patterns of infection that are risks for SSPE, early infection and a close temporal relationship between measles and another infection, as potential risks for IBD.
METHODS: The data are from 7019 members of a nationally representative 1970 British Cohort Study. The ages of five childhood infections were recorded before onset of IBD

BACKGROUND: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS) because of persistent measles virus (MeV) infection. Among the various treatment available the intraventricular interferon alpha administration demonstrated greater effectiveness.
METHOD: In this article is described the step-by-step surgical technique of the positioning of an intraventricular catheter connected to a rechargeable subcutaneous pump. The main surgical steps and the pump settings are illustrated in a supplementary video.
CONCLUSION: This surgical management gua

Tissue residues from 3 SSPE brains extracted at neutral pH were thoroughly washed with phosphate-buffered saline and further extracted at acidic pH. The low-pH extracts had significant measles antibody titers, and their measles-specific IgG content ranged from 40 to 60% of total IgG. Agarose-gel electrophoretic analysis of the extracts showed oligoclonal IgG bands, most of which disappeared after suitable absorption with measles virus, demonstrating the presence of restricted measles antibody population. Ouchterlony analysis showed a reaction of identity between bound IgG and IgG extracted at

Measles is one of widely spread virus infections that is a major cause of deaths in some tropical areas. The measles virus is a member of the genus of Morbillivirus of the family of Paramyxoviridae. The virions contain six polypeptides, including one glycoprotein; two of them are surface proteins that possess hemagglutinating and hemolytic activities, one of them is polymerase. Replication of the measles virus is similar to that of other Paramyxoviruses. Besides the acute infection for measles virus a persistent infection is characteristic that affects central nervous system and inner organs.

BACKGROUND: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare complication of measles virus infection. The disease is characterized by behavioural abnormalities, intellectual deterioration, motor weakness, and generalized myoclonic jerks progressing to coma and death in one to two years in 80% of the cases. The myoclonic jerks are associated with characteristic generalized slow periodic complexes on electroencephalography (EEG). The symptoms and signs of SSPE are frequently quite variable. The clinical course is equally variable and difficult to predict. The characteristic periodic myoclonu

The universal phenomenon of virus persistence is considered to be a regular phenomenon primarily meeting the interests of the host. Examinations of 1112 patients with various diseases of the nervous system revealed a certain dependence of macroglobulin measles antibody upon the character of the disease and the intensity of demyelinization process. These data do not suggest the etiological role of the persisting measles virus in the genesis of multiple sclerosis and a large group of other nervous system diseases (SSPE). Similar results were obtained in analogous examinations of patients for mac

A new indirect peroxidase antibody to membrane antigen (IPAMA) technique for the detection of IgG specific antibodies against measles virus is described. The technique utilizes as antigen measles-infected Vero cells dried on glass slides and stored at --70 degrees C. Sera of 509 healthy medical students and laboratory workers and 24 sera of measles, encephalitis, and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients were checked by IPAMA and the results have been compared with the results obtained by the hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test. There is good agreement between the results of bo

Persistent infections such as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) which do not produce infectious virus particles (nonproductive persistence) are often accompanied by a reduced steady-state amount of the viral matrix (M) protein and/or reduced hemadsorption activity. The possible causes of these aberrations associated with nonproductive persistence were investigated by following changes in the viral proteins with time in pulse-chase experiments. Three HeLa cell lines persistently infected with measles virus; K11, K11A, and HG111; were compared to each other and to acutely infected HeLa

Between 1978 and 1982 the authors saw 5 patients (13, 14, 15, 24 and 28 years old) with SSPE. The first symptom was a sudden loss of visual acuity (unilateral in 3 patients and bilateral in 2). Four of the patients treated were suffering from necrotizing, central, partly hemorrhagic retinitis (not affecting the vitreous or the choroid). In the area affected by retinitis there was a residual "depression", and in some cases alterations of the retinal pigment epithelium indicative of tissue loss. In recognizing the early symptoms of this neuro-ophthalmological disease the ophthalmologist makes an

Thirty consecutive isoelectric point (pI)-discrete IgG fractions were isolated from multiple sclerosis (MS) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and used to immune precipitate measles virus (MV) polypeptides. Most basic fractions were enriched in activity against nucleocapsid protein (NP), and to a lesser extent against hemagglutinin (H) protein; intermediate fractions were enriched in activity against H and fusion (F) proteins; and more anodic pI fractions were almost exclusively enriched in activity against the large (L) protein of MV. In MS there are marked differences between CSF and autologous serum

The immune function as well as anti-measles virus antibody level were investigated with 111 children in Karachi who were classified into high-, middle- and low-income groups. No difference in the blood cell counts or the biochemical data among three groups indicates no marked difference in the general health conditions among them. In the low-income group, levels of IgG, IgA and anti-measles virus antibody were significantly higher than those in the other two groups. Although 30% of children of the low-income group kept extremely high levels of immunoglobulin, no significant correlation was obs

This review describes the recent advances in slow infections of the nervous system emphasizing the pathogenetic aspects of these diseases. A theoretical model for the pathogenesis of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is proposed, illustrating the factors that may affect host response to the measles virus and allow it to persist and produce the panencephalitis. The isolation of an oncogenic virus from progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) has implications in the consideration of a viral etiology for some brain tumors. The agent responsible for the transmissibility of kuru an

Progressive rubella panencephalitis (PRP) is a slow virus infection of the central nervous system. PRP was first reported in 1974, and fewer than 20 cases have been reported since then. All patients were male who were between the ages of 8 and 21 years at onset, and most had signs of congenital rubella syndrome. Although PRP may exhibit clinical features resembling SSPE, the age at onset is much older and the clinical course is more benign. The main neurological features of PRP are dementia, cerebellar ataxia, and seizures. Increases in antirubella antibody titer and IgG are found in the CSF a
