Case of isolated sensory trigeminal neuropathy in a dog.

A two-year-old rough collie bitch with a five-week history of excess salivation, coughing and dysphagia was examined. The dog had bilateral sensory loss over the whole trigeminal field while motor function of the fifth cranial nerve was preserved. No other neurological abnormalities were detected. The dog was observed over 18 months during which the condition did not progress. It was destroyed 18 months after the onset of trigeminal signs following development of a systemic illness, refractory to treatment and unrelated to the neurological signs. Pathological abnormalities were limited to the …

Glycopyrrolate methobromide: 2. comparison with atropine sulphate in anaesthesia.

A double blind study of 98 patients was undertaken to compare the clinical usefulness of atropine and glycopyrrolate for pre-anaesthetic medication and their relative effectiveness in antagonizing the muscarinic effects of neostigmine methylsulphate given to reverse neuromuscular blockade. Intramuscular administration of atropine 0.4 mg or of glycopyrrolate 0.2 mg produced the same degree of dryness of the pharynx. However, glycopyrrolate was found to be a more potent antagonizer of the increased salivation induced by neostigmine. By intramuscular administration, both drugs produced the same d…

Pharmacological effects produced by intracerebral injection of drugs in the conscious mouse.

A method has been described for the study of the central effects produced by the intracerebral injection of drugs in the unanaesthetized mouse. The effects observed were in good agreement with those obtained after similar injections in cats, dogs and human beings. After intracerebral injection, drugs of diverse structure produced certain generalized effects: changes in positioning of the tail, stupor, hyperexcitability and tachypnoea. Both acetylcholine and methacholine produced an akinetic seizure and depression, but the latter compound also caused lacrimation and salivation. Atropine produce…

The diagnostic utility of biopsies from the submandibular and labial salivary glands in IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialoadenitis, so-called Mikulicz's disease.

IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialoadenitis (IgG4-DS) is characterized by serum IgG4 elevation and the infiltration of IgG4-positive plasm … >0.4). None of the patients experienced complications such as facial nerve palsy, sialocele, or hyposalivation. The IgG4/IgG ratio showed no significant correlation between the LSG and SMG. The final diagnosis was IgG4-DS in 13 patients and marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL) in one. These results suggest that incisional biopsy of the SMG is useful and appro …

[Effect of parasympathectomy on the salivary secretion of submandibular gland in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of parasympathectomy on secretion of submandibular glands and the feasibility of treatment for xerostomia in rats. METHODS: Twenty Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 200 - 300 g were randomly divided into the experimental group (n = 12), in which the right chorda-lingual nerve was cut, and the control group (n = 8). The secretion of submandibular gland was measured for 5 min by Schirmer test for both groups. RESULTS: The stimulated saliva flow rate decreased on 1st, 12th and 24th week after denervation in the right operated submandibular glands (P < 0.05).

Sialoadenitis secondary to ¹³¹I therapy for well-differentiated thyroid cancer.

Radioiodine (¹³¹I) is an important therapy for patients who have well-differentiated thyroid cancer. However, ¹³¹I may also result in side effects in multiple organs and glands. The glands that are frequently affected are the salivary glands with the major untoward effects including sialoadenitis and increased risk of second primary malignancy. This report will review sialoadenitis secondary to ¹³¹I therapy including (1) proposed mechanisms, (2) incidence and clinical presentations, (3) possible approaches to improve prevention, (4) management, and (5) sequelae of sialoadenitis (e.g. xerostomi

A comparison of the effects of 2 commercially available nonprescription mouthrinses on salivary flow rates and xerostomia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if 2 commercial mouthrinses, 1 alcohol-based and 1 nonalcohol-based, affect salivary flow and symptoms of dry mouth in nonxerostomic adults. METHOD AND MATERIALS: This observer-blinded, randomized, crossover pilot study involved 20 adults. The primary endpoints of interest were whole salivary flow rates and the perceived mouth dryness VAS scores following 1 week of use. ANOVA was used to determine differences in these endpoints between groups, and ANCOVA was used to control for any variation in baseline flow rates and VAS scores (P <.05). RESULTS: There were no signif

[Specialties in dentistry. Salivary flow and swallowing in Parkinson's disease].

Parkinson's disease is a slowly progressive and irreversible disorder of the nervous system. Drooling is listed as a secondary symptom of Parkinson's disease. Its cause is insufficiently clear. In the literature 2 possible causes are described: hypersalivation and swallowing abnormalities. These parameters have not been measured in a single study before. This article presents a review of the literature on the subject and describes the design for a future clinical study. The aim of this clinical study is to gain an insight into the cause and the prevalence of drooling in Parkinson's patients. A…

An evaluation of salivary scintigraphy in Sjögren's syndrome.

Sequential salivary scintigraphy, labial salivary gland biopsy, and measurement of stimulated parotid flow rate were performed in 50 patients suspected of having Sjögren's syndrome. The value of these tests in the diagnosis of this disease was compared. Salivary scintigraphy and labial salivary gland biopsy can be used together to diagnose the oral component of Sjögren's syndrome. Abnormal salivary scintigraphy correlated with both of the other tests and may be considered optional in the diagnostic evaluation.

[Selective secretion of rat salivary glands after anion administration and the effect of barbiturate on it].

A study was made of the secretion of labeled anions and their metabolites in the salivary composition of 96 adult Wistar rats. Salivary glands were characterized by a high selectivity in the secretion of substances. After the subcutaneous injection of 14C-acetate, 32P-orthophosphate, 35S-thiocyanate, 131I-iodide to control animals in the physiological state 14C concentrated 2.5--6 times more in the mixed saliva than in the blood, but the 32P level was 5 to 20 times less in the saliva than in the blood; 313I and 35S occupied an intermediate position between 14C and 32P. Penetration of labeled a

Appliances for treatment of oral sensori--motor disorders.

Cerebral palsied children with predominant oral sensori-motor disorders were treated with functional appliances. Clinical experience with the coordination and the synchronization of interdependent functional chains is reported. Reasonable therapeutic success in control of drooling, masticatory and swallowing defects as well as of perioral dysfunction, dysphonia and dysarticulation suggests a wider use of such functional methods.

Use of Botulinum Toxin for Effective Management of First Bite Syndrome Secondary to Malignancy: A Case Report.

First bite syndrome may impact patients who have undergone treatment for head and neck malignancies as well as those who have had surgery in the parapharyngeal space. As the name suggests, upon salivating and/or taking the initial bites of a meal, severe, intense pain may result. Generally, as the patient continues to consume the meal, the symptoms will lessen but may still lead to decreased quality of life. While pharmacological options traditionally include anticonvulsants or tricyclic antidepressants, botulinum toxin injections are an effective alternative to pharmacotherapy. We report the
