Escalation of intravenous fentanyl self-administration and assessment of withdrawal behavior in male and female mice.

RATIONALE: The rise in overdose deaths from synthetic opioids, especially fentanyl, necessitates the development of preclinical models to study fentanyl use disorder (FUD). While there has been progress with rodent models, additional translationally relevant models are needed to examine excessive fentanyl intake and withdrawal signs. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to develop a translationally relevant preclinical mouse model of FUD by employing chronic intravenous fentanyl self-administration (IVSA). METHODS: The study performed intravenous self-administration (IVSA) of fentanyl in male

Pilot study to assess the feasibility of self-administered, low-dose methoxyflurane for cystoscopic procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Methoxyflurane (MEO F) (Penthrox™) is an inhaled, self-administered, non-opioid analgesic approved by Health Canada for the short-term relief of moderate to severe acute pain associated with trauma or interventional medical procedures. In this pilot study, we evaluated the feasibility of using MEOF as an anesthetic agent in 11 patients undergoing outpatient cystoscopic procedures. METHODS: The average duration of the procedure was 24 (range 20-35) minutes and this included 10 minutes of administration time of the drug and five minutes of wait time before the procedure. The avera

In situ psycho-cognitive assessments support self-determined urban green exercise time.

Prescribed nature walks frequently yield improvements to mood and cognition as observed in experimental studies. Research that uses real life settings such as self-determined time exercising outdoors for restorative health benefits may more accurately elicit effects than time-specified study protocols. This study examined in situ psycho-cognitive outcomes of routine walks in urban greenspace to test the concept that self-set exposure duration and not context alone is related to magnitude of psycho-cognitive benefit. Pre-post measurements taken on a diverse participant pool of individuals walki

Objective performance tests assess aspects of function not captured by self-report in knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) can substantially limit function, which can be assessed both objectively and subjectively. We examined whether objective performance tests are associated with self-reported function. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from the Osteoarthritis Registry of Biomarker and Imaging Trajectories (ORBIT) of participants ≥40 years old with symptomatic and radiographic knee OA. Subjects completed the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) Pain and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scales and other assessments of pain and comorbidity. Subjects performed the

Prehospital assessment of patients with abdominal pain triaged to self-care at home: an observation study.

BACKGROUND: Patients who call for emergency medical services (EMS) due to abdominal pain suffer from a broad spectrum of diseases, some of which are time sensitive. As a result of the introduction of the concept of 'optimal level of care', some patients with abdominal pain are triaged to other levels of care than in an emergency department (ED). We hypothesised that it could be challenging in a patient safety perspective. AIM: This study aims to describe consecutive patients who call for EMS due to abdominal pain and are triaged to self-care by EMS clinicians. METHODS: This was an observatio

Detecting negative valence symptoms in adolescents based on longitudinal self-reports and behavioral assessments.

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of depressive symptoms reported by adolescents and associated risk of experiencing psychiatric disorders as adults, differentiating the trajectories of the symptoms related to negative valence at an individual level could be crucial in gaining a better understanding of their effects later in life. METHODS: A longitudinal deep learning framework is presented, identifying self-reported and behavioral measurements that detect the depressive symptoms associated with the Negative Valence System domain of the NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC). RESULTS: Appl

Can a Self-report Measure Be Used to Assess Cognitive Skills in Adults With Hearing Loss?

HYPOTHESES: Adult cochlear implant candidates would self-report their executive functioning abilities as poorer than normal-hearing peers. These executive function abilities would correlate with laboratory-based cognitive tests. Lastly, executive functioning (EF) abilities would be associated with hearing-related quality of life. BACKGROUND: Executive function refers to cognitive abilities involved in behavioral regulation during goal-directed activity. Pediatric and adult users have demonstrated delays and deficits in executive function skills compared with normal-hearing peers. This study a

The BRAIN-Q, a tool for assessing self-reported sport-related concussions for epidemiological studies.

OBJECTIVES: The BRAIN-Q is a tool aimed at maximising the accuracy and minimising measurement error for retrospectively assessing concussions. This paper reports the agreement of the BRAIN-Q tool when compared to extant questionnaire questions, and its reproducibility when compared with its telephonic version (tBRAIN-Q). METHODS: The BRAIN-Q entails a 3-stage process: defining a concussion, creating a visual timeline with life events, and establishing detailed characteristics for each reported concussion. It was designed to be administered in-person by trained personnel, and was used in the B

Development and validation of a self-report measure assessing failures in the mentalization of trauma and adverse relationships.

BACKGROUND: The way people process trauma and adverse relationships may be more predictive of subsequent adaptation than trauma exposure in itself. However, there is currently no self-report instrument assessing failures in the mentalization of trauma and adverse relationships. OBJECTIVE: We developed the Failure to Mentalize Trauma Questionnaire (FMTQ) and evaluated its psychometric properties. The FMTQ is a 29-item self-report instrument designed to assess different indications of failures in the mentalization of trauma and adverse relationships. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 975 pa

Reappraisal of disgust: Self-report and behavioural assessment of individuals with moderate to high contamination fears.

Previous research has linked certain psychological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), to the experience of disgust and how it is interpreted/appraised. Therefore, the present study examined whether targeting primary and secondary disgust appraisals (i.e., cognitive reappraisal) in individuals with moderate to high OCD-relevant contamination fears can effectively reduce disgust. Fifty-two participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions; two of which involved reading a brief script modifying either a primary disgust appraisal (i.e., likelihood of a feared ou

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Feedback: A Comparison of Device-Measured and Self-Assessed Chest Compression Quality.

BACKGROUND: High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the foundation of cardiac arrest care. Guidelines specify chest compression depth, recoil, and rate, but providers often fail to achieve these targets. Furthermore, providers are largely unable assess the quality of their own or other peoples' chest compressions. Chest compression feedback devices can improve chest compression quality; their use is endorsed internationally, but they remain largely absent in clinical care. This article analyzes preclinical data collected during a quality improvement project. It describes provider demogra
