Interaction effect of tegmen tympani and superior semicircular canal statuses on the thickness of the roof of the glenoid fossa: a cross-sectional descriptive study.

PURPOSE: Homogeneous development of temporal bone structures is explained by their ontogenic origin; tegmen tympani (TT) and superior semicircular canal (SSC) are related with the glenoid fossa at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Therefore, our objective was to determine a possible relationship between TT status (dehiscence or integrity) and the roof of the glenoid fossa (RGF) thickness; SSC status has also been considered. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in two tertiary hospitals on 95 patients (109 ears) presenting hypoacusia, facial palsy, vertigo, tinnitus,

Long-term outcomes of triple semicircular canal plugging for the treatment of intractable Meniere's disease: A single center experience of 361 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Meniere's disease is a common chronic inner ear disease. Because the definitive pathogenesis is still unknown, there is currently no cure for this disorder. Semicircular canal plugging (SCP), first used to treat patients with intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, has since been applied to patients with intractable peripheral vertigo. This study was aimed to explore the long-term efficacy of triple semicircular canal plugging (TSCP) in the treatment of intractable Meniere's disease (MD) so as to provide a new method in the framework of treatment with MD. METHODS: Thre

Ion transport regulation by P2Y receptors, protein kinase C and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase within the semicircular canal duct epithelium.

BACKGROUND: The ionic composition of the luminal fluid in the vestibular labyrinth is maintained within tight limits by the many types of epithelial cells bounding the lumen. Regulatory mechanisms include systemic, paracrine and autocrine hormones along with their associated intracellular signal pathways. The epithelium lining the semicircular canal duct (SCCD) is a tissue that is known to absorb sodium and calcium and to secrete chloride. FINDINGS: Transport function was assessed by measurements of short circuit current (Isc) and gene transcript expression was evaluated by microarray. Neithe

Computed tomography-based workup of conductive hearing loss with normal middle ear: don't forget superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

Patients with superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) may have conductive hearing loss (CHL) with normal middle ear (ME). A patient with CHL and normal tympanic membrane at otoscopy underwent tympanotomy for presumed otosclerosis but had negative intraoperative findings. A high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bone performed a few years later showed the absence of middle-ear disorder (especially the absence of imaging signs of otosclerosis) and revealed a bony dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal. High-resolution CT scan is the test of choice for diagnosi

Far advanced otosclerosis and intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo treated with combined cochlear implantation and posterior semicircular canal occlusion.

This paper presents a combined procedure for the management of intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and profound hearing loss in a patient with far advanced otosclerosis. The procedure comprised of a posterior semicircular canal occlusion and cochlear implantation as one combined procedure in the same ear. The combined approach added little to the operative morbidity and proved effective in this patient's management. A search of the literature reveals this to be a unique case.

Spatial position changes in the semicircular canals may be the anatomical basis of Meniere's disease: a preliminary study based on ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (CT) and intelligent segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Meniere's disease (MD) is an ear-related vestibular disorder accompanied by vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus. The anatomical structure and spatial position of the semicircular canals are important for understanding vestibular function and disease; however, research on MD and the effect of anatomical changes in the semicircular canals is limited. This study explored the relationship between the spatial location of the semicircular canals and MD using ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) and intelligent segmentation. METHODS: Isotropic U-HRCT images obtained from pa…

Are gain values significantly altered by manual data selection when performing the video Head Impulse Test (v-HIT) on all six semicircular canals with two different v-HIT systems.

BACKGROUND: It has not yet been tested whether averaged gain values and the presence of pathological saccades are significantly altered by manual data selection or if data selection only done by the incorporated software detection algorithms provides a reliable data set following v-HIT testing. OBJECTIVE: The primary endpoint was to evaluate whether the averaged gain values of all six SCCs are significantly altered by manual data selection with two different v-HIT systems. METHOD: 120 subjects with previously neither vestibular nor neurological disorders underwent four separate tests of all

Semicircular canal dysfunction in profound sudden sensorineural hearing loss and its prognostic value: implications for the proper indication of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Vestibular involvement in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is regarded as an indicator of poor prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of semicircular canal dysfunction in profound SSNHL and evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) accordingly. From October 1, 2020 to August 15, 2025, patients diagnosed with profound SSNHL (≥ 80 dB) and with available video head impulse test results were assessed. A total of 85 patients were included and divided into two groups based on HBOT compliance: the HBOT group (≥ 5 sessions, n = 39) and the

Complex nystagmus in traumatic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: A case study on the critical value of knowing semicircular canal excitation and inhibition patterns.

A 73-year-old female presented to the emergency department with chief complaint of dizziness after sustaining a fall one month prior to dizziness onset. Although careful examination of eye movement patterns during positional testing was attempted at varying stages of her inpatient admission, her complex nystagmus patterns as a result of traumatic benign paroxysmal vertigo were difficult to manage. In particular, the nystagmus pattern from this case suggests the BPPV was variable and affecting either 1) left posterior semicircular canal (pSCC) exclusively 2) left pSCC and right anterior semicir

Semicircular canal morphogenesis in the zebrafish inner ear requires the function of gpr126 (lauscher), an adhesion class G protein-coupled receptor gene.

Morphogenesis of the semicircular canal ducts in the vertebrate inner ear is a dramatic example of epithelial remodelling in the embryo, and failure of normal canal development results in vestibular dysfunction. In zebrafish and Xenopus, semicircular canal ducts develop when projections of epithelium, driven by extracellular matrix production, push into the otic vesicle and fuse to form pillars. We show that in the zebrafish, extracellular matrix gene expression is high during projection outgrowth and then rapidly downregulated after fusion. Enzymatic disruption of hyaluronan in the projection

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials n10 response in autism spectrum disorders children with auditory hypersensitivity: an indicator of semicircular canal dehiscence.

UNLABELLED: Sensitivity to sound is one of the most commonly reported challenges in ASD. No compelling evidence shows that hearing of ASD individuals differs physiologically from normal peers. Superior semicircular canal dehiscence was found to be more common in ASD children with auditory hypersensitivity (29%) by means of high-resolution CT scan than the reported (14%) in normal pediatric population by other investigators. The increased prevalence of radiographic dehiscence might be due to inability of CT scan to visualize immature bone. We wished to determine whether ocular vestibular evoked

Patient-specific 3D-printed mold system for superior semicircular canal third-window repair: design, fabrication, and first-in-human feasibility.

Superior semicircular canal (SSC) dehiscence is a pathological defect in the bony labyrinth of the inner ear that produces auditory and vestibular symptoms due to abnormal third-window mechanics. Conventional surgical methods, including canal plugging and resurfacing, may improve symptoms but can be associated with vestibular or auditory risks. This study reports the design, fabrication, technical verification, and first-in-human feasibility of a patient-specific, 3D-printed mold system for anatomical repair of the SSC. Using high-resolution computed tomography, three-dimensional reconstructio

Feasibility and safety of repositioning maneuvers for posterior semicircular canal BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) in elderly over 80 years of age.

PURPOSE: Balance problems in the elderly are a major social concern, primarily due to the risk of falls. One of the reasons of fast worsening of stability and therefore falling is represented by acute BPPV. Treatment through repositioning maneuvers could significantly reduce the risk of further falls of the patients treated with. The physical ability of older individuals to be treated with maneuvers is a topic of debate due to possible joint stiffness and less compliance with movements. There are few previous studies focusing on the practicality and effectiveness of physical therapy for BPPV i
