Intensity versus type of affect elicited by dissociative cognitions in moderating acute pain.

75 undergraduates were trained to use cognitions that elicited either high or low pleasure, high or low fear, or received an expectancy manipulation. Groups high in pleasure showed greater tolerance for pressure pain than other treatment groups but did not differ from expectancy; differences were not found on discomfort ratings. Results were not attributable to differential compliance with instructions, perceived effectiveness of cognitions used, or the number of cognitions used. The percentage of time during stimulation that assigned cognitions were used appeared to mediate tolerance. Expecta

Changes in rectal sensitivity after hypnotherapy in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Fifteen patients with the irritable bowel syndrome were studied to assess the effect of hypnotherapy on anorectal physiology. In comparison with a control group of 15 patients who received no hypnotherapy significant changes in rectal sensitivity were found in patients with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome both after a course of hypnotherapy and during a session of hypnosis (p less than 0.05). Although patient numbers were small, a trend towards normalisation of rectal sensitivity was also observed in patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. No changes in

Minimal two-point discrimination in human tongue and palate.

The distribution of minimal two-point discrimination values on the tongue and soft palate was investigated in normal subjects using electric stimulation. It was performed using square pulses of 0.35 ms duration, a rate 10 Hz, a voltage between 3.5 and 7.0 with an average of 4.09 using two silver-silver chloride electrodes (tip diameter, 0.4 mm), and a strain-guage device to control crimping pressure. The spatial threshold was 1.650 +/- 0.433 mm at the tongue tip and 2.650 +/- 0.856 mm and 1.675 +/- 0.269 mm on the anterior margin of each side of the tongue. The soft palate and lingual dorsum w

Olfactory function following late repair of choanal atresia.

Results of olfactory function tests (threshold determination and odor identification) in three cases of bilateral and one case of unilateral choanal atresia are reported. All four patients underwent successful repair of choanal atresia at relatively advanced ages (8 to 31 years). Test results showed that patients who had suffered from bilateral atresia had permanent olfactory deficits, while the patient who had suffered from unilateral atresia appeared to have normal olfactory acuity. Although these results should be interpreted with caution due to the small number of cases examined, they sugg

Temperature and vibration thresholds in vibration syndrome.

In a study to investigate whether the quantitative assessment of temperature and vibration thresholds can improve the evaluation of the neur … troneurographic findings had impaired temperature or vibration thresholds or both. Determination of sensory thresholds seems to add valuable information and the methods are, by contrast with electroneurography, easily adapted to the screening of exposed groups outside hospital. Our results indicate that thin myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibres might be damaged …

Vibration perception thresholds in entrapment and toxic neuropathies.

Due to the ever-increasing problems associated with carpal tunnel syndrome in the workplace where exposure to neurotoxic substances may also occur, measure of nerve function addressing both of these neuropathies is needed. Limitations in the standard neurological examination and nerve conduction studies have resulted in efforts to develop portable instruments for quantitative sensory testing. Fingertip vibration perception is altered in carpal tunnel syndrome and toxic neuropathies. Vibration perception is described for the median-innervated II digit and the ulnar-innervated V digit using an O

Clinical evaluation of olfaction.

An odor identification test and an odor threshold test offered satisfactory quantitative information on olfactory function in patients with chemosensory complaints. The threshold test used various concentrations of butanol presented in an ascending sequence. On each trial, the participant had to choose between stimulus and blank (two-alternative forced-choice procedure). The identification test used common odorous items (e.g., baby powder and ground coffee) and pungent items (e.g., ammonia) to test trigeminal function. A list of odor names and use of corrective feedback during testing overcame

Electrical stimulation of tooth pulp in humans. II. Qualities of sensations.

Individual premolar teeth of 22 normal volunteers were stimulated via intradentinal electrodes using brief electrical pulses. Questionnaires were used to determine the qualities of sensations produced by this stimulation. Operationally defined 'innocuous' sensations predominated between 1 and 10 dB SL, and were absent above 30 dB SL. Similarly defined 'painful' sensations were observed throughout the range of suprathreshold intensities but were most common above 20 dB SL. These findings demonstrate that non-painful sensations can arise from electrical tooth pulp excitation in circumstances in

[Depression in rheumatic diseases or somatic symptoms in depression].

Depression can be produced in many different ways. Via cerebral nuclear-specific imbalance a depression can be associated with disturbances in nuclear regions regulating muscular tone. Such syndromes appear chiefly as syndromes of the cervical vertebral column or lumbal vertebral column or as a general "non-specific-pain-syndrome". Depression may also cause manifestations of "latent" rheumatic complaints by lowering the pain threshold. Chronic physical diseases may be assumed to produce depression via the "common pathway" (nuclear-specific imbalance of biogenic amines). Masked depression can a

The role of consciousness in stress-induced analgesia.

Male rats received unavoidable footshock administered while either awake or under Halothane anaesthesia. Tail-flick threshold was measured subsequently in awake rats. An elevation in pain threshold indicative of stress-induced analgesia (SIA) appeared in rats shocked while awake, but not in those shocked while anaesthetized. The findings suggest that conscious processes are necessary for the occurrence of SIA.

The threshold of stereopsis in the presence of differences in magnification of the ocular images.

A comparison between 100 percent correct response thresholds of stereopsis for nine subjects measured with and without viewing using a 33 percent difference in ocular image magnification is presented. Two subjects performed threshold settings, using the method of adjustments, with 1, 5, 10, 15, and 33 percent magnification differences. The extent of the increase explains reports of stereopsis in corrected unilateral aphakia.

Short-term restoration of facial sensory loss by motor cortex stimulation in peripheral post-traumatic neuropathic pain.

We report a case in which motor cortex stimulation (MCS) improved neuropathic facial pain due to peripheral nerve injury and restored tactile and thermal sensory loss. A 66-year-old man developed intractable trigeminal neuropathic pain after trauma of the supraorbital branch of the Vth nerve, associated with tactile and thermal sensory loss in the painful area. MCS was performed using neuronavigation and transdural electric stimulation to localize the upper facial area on the motor cortex. One month after surgery, pain was decreased from 80/100 to 20/100 on visual analogic scale, and sensory d

Single olfactory receptors set odor detection thresholds.

In many species, survival depends on olfaction, yet the mechanisms that underlie olfactory sensitivity are not well understood. Here we examine how a conserved subset of olfactory receptors, the trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs), determine odor detection thresholds of mice to amines. We find that deleting all TAARs, or even single TAARs, results in significant odor detection deficits. This finding is not limited to TAARs, as the deletion of a canonical odorant receptor reduced behavioral sensitivity to its preferred ligand. Remarkably, behavioral threshold is set solely by the most sens

The response to local anaesthetics (EMLA-cream) as a clinical test to diagnose between hypermobility and Ehlers Danlos type III syndrome.

To make a differential diagnosis of Ehlers Danlos (EDS) Type III syndrome and Hypermobile patients has been difficult. In genetic advising and prognosis of the EDS patients there are need for new tools to separate them from hypermobile patients. Topical analgesics (EMLA cream) was applied to seven EDS patients, ten hypermobile patients, and to fifteen controls. The analgesic efficacy of cutaneous analgesia was evaluated by sensory and pain thresholds to brief argon laser stimuli, and the depth of the cutaneous analgesia was measured by sensory and pain threshold depth to controlled needle inse

Insufficient effect of local analgesics in Ehlers Danlos type III patients (connective tissue disorder).

The analgesic effects of intradermal lidocaine infiltration and topical EMLA cream applications (eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics) were studied in 8 patients with Ehlers Danlos syndrome type III, a heritable disorder of connective tissue, and in 8 controls. Cutaneous analgesia was evaluated by sensory and pain thresholds to short argon laser stimulation, and the depth of cutaneous analgesia was measured by sensory and pain thresholds to controlled needle insertion. Five minutes after lidocaine infiltration, the laser-induced pain was abolished in both groups, but 1 h later only the skin

Test-retest reliability of quantitative sensory testing for mechanical somatosensory and pain modulation assessment of masticatory structures.

Assessing the reliability of medical measurements is a crucial step towards the elaboration of an applicable clinical instrument. There are few studies that evaluate the reliability of somatosensory assessment and pain modulation of masticatory structures. This study estimated the test-retest reliability, that is over time, of the mechanical somatosensory assessment of anterior temporalis, masseter and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) using the anterior temporalis as the test site. Twenty healthy women were evaluated in two sessions (1 week apart) by the

Sensory irritation as a basis for setting occupational exposure limits.

There is a need of guidance on how local irritancy data should be incorporated into risk assessment procedures, particularly with respect to the derivation of occupational exposure limits (OELs). Therefore, a board of experts from German committees in charge of the derivation of OELs discussed the major challenges of this particular end point for regulatory toxicology. As a result, this overview deals with the question of integrating results of local toxicity at the eyes and the upper respiratory tract (URT). Part 1 describes the morphology and physiology of the relevant target sites, i.e., th

Sensory sensitivity to external stimuli in Tourette syndrome patients.

Patients with Tourette Syndrome often state that their sensitivity to sensations is equally or more disruptive than are motor tics. However, their sensory sensitivity is not addressed by standard clinical assessments nor is it a focus of research. This lapse likely results from our limited awareness and understanding of the symptom. In this study (1) we defined the patients' experience of sensitivity to external stimuli in detail, and (2) we tested 2 hypotheses regarding its origin. First, we interviewed in depth and administered a lengthy questionnaire to adult Tourette patients (n = 19) and
