The relationship of timing of early parental separation to psychosocial development of daughters was examined in 77 girls, 6-9 years of age over a four-year period. Disruptive behavior across contexts was prevalent in girls separated between birth and two years of age. Girls separated between three and five years of age showed more externalizing behavior problems, but only in school. Results suggest that early parental separation has more pervasive and stable negative effects on psychosocial adjustment of girls in this age group in single-parent families. Epigenetic inheritance relies on the precise recycling of parental histones during DNA replication. The N-terminal region of Pol1, the catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase α, has previously been implicated in chaperoning parental histone recycling. Aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (AMEs) constitute the most prevalent mechanism of resistance to aminoglycosides by bacteria. We show that aminoglycosides can be doubly modified by the sequential actions of AMEs, with the activity of the second AME in most cases unaffected, decreased, or completely abolished. We demonstrate that the bifunctional enzyme AAC(3)-Ib/AAC(6')-Ib' can diacetylate gentamicin. Since single acetylation does not always inactivate the parent drugs completely, two modifications likely provide more-robust inactivation in vivo.

Permethylation of a barbiturate with the methylsulfinylmethide carbanion and methyl iodide gave three products clearly separable by GLC. Alteration of the reaction conditions by varying the barbiturate to carbanion ratio or the barbiturate to carbanion exposure time resulted in a single product for only one examined barbiturate, secobarbital. This derivatization technique is useful for the GLC analysis of polar barbiturate metabolites, such as glucuronides, in biological fluids but is of limited value for the analysis of the parent compounds.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) with young children who stutter.
METHOD: This is a longitudinal, multiple single-subject study. The participants were 6 children aged 3;3-4;10 [years;months] who had been stuttering for longer than 12 months. Therapy consisted of 6 sessions of clinic-based therapy and 6 weeks of home consolidation. Speech samples were videorecorded during free play with parents at home and analyzed to obtain stuttering data for each child before therapy, during therapy, and up to 12 months posttherapy.
