Change in Mental Health and Resilience in Childhood Cancer Survivors After Attending a Person-Centred State-of-the-Art Late Effects Clinic-on Behalf of the PanCareFollowUp Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Person-centred follow-up care based on evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and providing individualised information should help to inform and reassure survivors about their medical and psychosocial situation and provide treatment and support where needed. AIMS: To describe changes in mental health and resilience in survivors before and after a person-centred follow-up care intervention and analyse associations of mental health improvements with socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: We implemented the novel person-centred PanCareFollowUp Care Interventio

The Effects of Gentamicin Intravesical Bladder Instillations on Decreasing Urinary Tract Infections After Spinal Cord Injury and Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common and source of significant morbidity for patients with spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D) who require clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) bladder management. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of gentamicin bladder instillations in reducing recurrent UTIs and their impact on neurogenic bladder and bowel (NBB) symptoms and common complications; on quality of life (QOL) and community participation for patients with SCI/D performing CIC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a Prospective single arm feasibili

Most blood biomarkers related to vitamin status, one-carbon metabolism, and the kynurenine pathway show adequate preanalytical stability and within-person reproducibility to allow assessment of exposure or nutritional status in healthy women and cardiovascular patients.

Knowledge of stability during sample transportation and changes in biomarker concentrations within person over time are paramount for proper design and interpretation of epidemiologic studies based on a single measurement of biomarker status. Therefore, we investigated stability and intraindividual vs. interindividual variation in blood concentrations of biomarkers related to vitamin status, one-carbon metabolism, and the kynurenine pathway. Whole blood (EDTA and heparin, n = 12) was stored with an icepack for 24 or 48 h, and plasma concentrations of 38 biomarkers were determined. Stability wa

Community music activity participation and loneliness among Chinese young adults living alone.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has become an increasingly salient psychological and social issue among young adults in contemporary urban China. Young adults living alone may be particularly vulnerable because of reduced daily companionship, limited opportunities for sustained social interaction, and relatively weak emotional support networks. As an accessible form of cultural and social participation embedded in community settings, community music activity may be relevant to loneliness among young adults living alone. However, the associations linking community music participation, perceived restorat

Causal links between personality disorders and schizophrenia: A Mendelian randomization study.

Although observational studies have suggested associations between personality disorders and schizophrenia, the causality of these relationships remains unclear. Determining whether personality disorders causally contribute to schizophrenia could inform early identification and preventive efforts. We performed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using large-scale Genome-wide Association Study data from populations of European ancestry. Because no single nucleotide polymorphism for personality disorders reached the conventional genome-wide significance threshold (P < 5 × 10-8), we

Schizophrenia mediating the effect of smoking phenotypes on antisocial behavior: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

AIMS: Previous studies have indicated that smoking is linked to an increased risk of developing schizophrenia, and that individuals with schizophrenia are more prone to engaging in antisocial behavior. However, the causal effects of smoking behaviors on antisocial behavior and the potential mediating role of schizophrenia remains largely unclear. METHODS: In the present study, using the summary data from genome wide association studies of smoking phenotypes (N = 323,386-805,431), schizophrenia (Ncases = 53,386, Ncontrols = 77,258), and antisocial behavior (N = 85,359), we assessed bidirection

Attitudes and practices of unmarried adults towards sickle cell disease: emergent factors from a cross sectional study in Nigeria's capital.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease is a genetic autosomal blood disorder that causes red blood cells to turn rigid and crescent shaped. The condition ultimately results to several complications leading to organ damage. This study aimed at assessing attitudes and practices of unmarried adults towards sickle cell disease. METHODS: A cross sectional study was undertaken in the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory. Data were collected using a well-structured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were undertaken. RESULTS: Male and female participants were of a similar proportion as r

Irritable assault and variation in the COMT gene.

Aggression is associated with the 'low' activity allele (Met) of the functional Val158Met polymorphism among people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders relative to the 'high' activity (Val) allele. We examined this polymorphism in a sample of 112 people with axis II personality disorders. Participants completed the Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms in the COMT gene were genotyped in these participants classified as 'white' according to US Census Bureau definitions. We failed to observe an association between the Val158Met allele and aggression but observed

Living arrangements and eating behaviors of older adults in the United States.

Associations between living arrangements and several eating behaviors were examined for 4,402 adults aged 55 and older using three-day food intake data from the 1977-78 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey (NFCS). Compared to those living with a spouse, persons living alone ate more meals alone and consumed a higher proportion of total calories away from home; a higher proportion of those living alone skipped meals, including breakfast. There was a sex differential in the effect of living alone for some, but not all, of the eating behaviors. Both the probability of eating away from home and of s

[Contact behavior of elderly females living alone from the social psychologic viewpoint--an exploratory study. II: Social contact with children (close relations) and with other relatives (siblings, extended family)].

After a theoretical introduction, the authors present the results of an exploratory study on the social contacts between older women living alone and their children and other relatives, respectively. It seems to be of special importance for future examinations not to confine oneself to recording the quality and the quantity of such contacts. The necessity of a description of the social contacts in substance in the individual fields of contact is pointed out.

Reclassifying congruence in wellbeing: a systematic review and alignment framework.

Research on wellbeing has increasingly shifted toward within-person and short-timescale processes, yet remains conceptually fragmented across motivational, relational, and value-based literatures. Constructs reflecting congruence between internal standards (e.g., needs, values, identity) and lived experience are widely studied but rarely integrated. This systematic review aimed to synthesize how alignment-related processes are defined, operationalized, and empirically linked to momentary wellbeing and short-term disruption/recovery within individuals. A PRISMA-informed systematic review was co

Impact of a diagnosis of 'low-grade dysplasia' in patients with Barrett's esophagus.

Barrett's esophagus (BE) is the precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Progression to high-grade dysplasia (HGD)/EAC can be directly from non-dysplastic BE or via low-grade dysplasia (LGD). There is a lack of consensus about the implications of LGD diagnosis on progression risk and whether modifying risk progression with endoscopic interventions such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is appropriate. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical implications of LGD and the cost-effectiveness of different management strategies. Outcomes from a large single-center prospective BE surve

Andes Virus Genome Mutations That Are Likely Associated with Animal Model Attenuation and Human Person-to-Person Transmission.

We performed whole-genome sequencing with bait enrichment techniques to analyze Andes virus (ANDV), a cause of human hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. We used cryopreserved lung tissues from a naturally infected long-tailed colilargo, including early, intermediate, and late cell culture, passages of an ANDV isolate from that animal, and lung tissues from golden hamsters experimentally exposed to that ANDV isolate. The resulting complete genome sequences were subjected to detailed comparative genomic analysis against American orthohantaviruses. We identified four amino acid substitutions related t

Development of the Person-Centered Contraceptive Counseling scale (PCCC), a short form of the Interpersonal Quality of Family Planning care scale.

OBJECTIVE: Person-centeredness is a critical component of quality in family planning. We previously validated an 11-item Interpersonal Quality of Family Planning (IQFP) scale. We sought to create a parsimonious version of the scale in preparation for testing its appropriateness as a patient-reported outcome performance measure. STUDY DESIGN: To explore clarity and importance of each of the 11 items, we conducted English and Spanish cognitive interviews with patients who received contraceptive counseling (n = 33) at 3 publicly funded California clinics. We triangulated these results with psych

Forearm brachial artery to brachial vein looped arteriovenous grafts: A single center, single surgeon observational study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term hemodialysis (HD) treatment requires the establishment of a cannulatable vascular access (VA) point. While the arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is considered the gold standard, the arteriovenous graft (AVG) is a viable alternative especially in patients with poor superficial venous anatomy. Few studies have assessed the efficacy of the brachial-brachial arteriovenous graft (BB-AVG) for long-term HD access. By analyzing one surgeon's experience in creating, surveilling and maintaining BB-AVGs, this retrospective study aims to add to the body of literature in assessing patency o

The ocular surface, coronaviruses and COVID-19.

The ocular surface has been suggested as a site of infection with Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). This review examines the evidence for this hypothesis, and its implications for clinical practice. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, is transmitted by person-to-person contact, via airborne droplets, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. SARS-CoV-2 binds to angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) to facilitate infection in humans. This review sets out to evaluate evidence fo

Oral anticoagulation, aspirin, or no therapy in patients with nonvalvular AF with 0 or 1 stroke risk factor based on the CHA2DS2-VASc score.

BACKGROUND: Even a single additional stroke risk factor in patients with atrial fibrillation may confer a risk of stroke. However, there is no consensus on how best to treat these patients. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to investigate the risk of stroke and bleeding and the impact of antithrombotic therapy among low-risk patients, i.e., with 0 or 1 CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke/transient ischemic attack, vascular disease, age 65 to 74 years, sex category) score risk factor. Impact of an educational program on the safety of high-risk, visually impaired, older drivers.

BACKGROUND: Older drivers (licensed drivers aged 60 years and older) have among the highest rates of motor vehicle collision involvement per mile driven of all age groups. Educational programs that promote safe driving strategies among seniors are a popular approach for addressing this problem, but their safety benefit has yet to be demonstrated. The objective of this study was to determine whether an individualized educational program that promoted strategies to enhance driver safety reduces the crash rate of high-risk older drivers. DESIGN/ SETTING: Randomized, controlled, single-masked inte
