Vivid dreams are associated with a high percentage of REM sleep: a prospective study in veterans.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Vivid dreams are dreams that feel real or are associated with dream enactment behavior. They are prevalent in veterans, especially in those with psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorders. Such psychiatric disorders have known association with abnormalities in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Vivid dreams are also described in neurological conditions, such Lewy body dementias, which are also associated with REM sleep abnormality. Although vivid dreams occur in neuropsychiatric disorders that have REM sleep abnormalities, there are no studies that have direct

REM sleep behavior disorder with predominant nightmares in a patient with ischemic pontine lesions.

UNLABELLED: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia typically associated with synucleinopathy and evolving to neurodegenerative disorders. RBD is caused by impairment of brainstem nuclei controlling REM sleep muscle atonia. Rarely, focal lesions of the brainstem can cause secondary RBD. We present the case of a 74-year-old patient, previously evaluated at age 70 years for insomnia and periodic limb movements during sleep, who then rapidly developed unpleasant dreams with minor motor behavior, affecting his sleep quality. Polysomnography recorded REM sleep without

Distribution of MCH-containing fibers in the feline brainstem: Relevance for REM sleep regulation.

Neurons that utilize melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) as a neuromodulator are localized in the postero-lateral hypothalamus and incerto-hypothalamic area. These neurons project diffusely throughout the central nervous system and have been implicated in critical physiological processes, such as sleep. Unlike rodents, in the order carnivora as well as in humans, MCH exerts its biological functions through two receptors: MCHR-1 and MCHR-2. Hence, the cat is an optimal animal to model MCHergic functions in humans. In the present study, we examined the distribution of MCH-positive fibers in the

[REM-sleep behavior disorder and sleepwalking in a patient with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor].

REM-sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a form of parasomnia, is characterized by motor and/or speech activity during sleep corresponding to the dream content. RBD is currently considered as a marker of onset of neurodegenerative diseases (sinucleinopathies) and as a most specific early symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). The authors describe a clinical case of a patient with the combination of essential tremor, initial signs of PD and RBD. A polysomnographic study has confirmed clinical signs of RBD and determined the disturbances of sleep architecture: the increase in falling asleep, number of a

The effect of selective REM-sleep deprivation on the consolidation and affective evaluation of emotional memories.

Emotion boosts the consolidation of events in the declarative memory system. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is believed to foster the memory consolidation of emotional events. On the other hand, REM sleep is assumed to reduce the emotional tone of the memory. Here, we investigated the effect of selective REM-sleep deprivation, SWS deprivation, or wake on the affective evaluation and consolidation of emotional and neutral pictures. Prior to an 9-h retention interval, sixty-two healthy participants (23.5 ± 2.5 years, 32 female, 30 male) learned and rated their affect to 80 neutral and 80 emotion

Decreasing concentration of interstitial glucose in REM sleep in subjects with normal glucose tolerance.

AIMS: Sleep is divided into two major stages, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM), which are distinct in various neuroendocrine respects. NREM/REM cycles influence insulin and glucagon secretion; however, glucose concentrations in REM compared with NREM have not been directly explored. The aim was to investigate the differences in glucose concentrations in interstitial fluid (IGC) between NREM/REM cycles using a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS). METHODS: Thirteen subjects were eligible for analysis out of the 28 enrolled. All underwent standard polysomnograph

Potential participation of cystatin C in rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) modulation.

It has been hypothesized that proteins modulate rapid eye movement sleep (REMS). Studies have shown an increase in the liberation of proteins in the mesencephalic reticular formation of cats during REMS. It has also been determined that protein-synthesis inhibitors diminish REMS and that protease-inhibitors increase this sleep phase. These and other studies support the importance of "di novo" protein molecules in sleep, and in particular, in REMS regulation. In this context, it is important to determine the role of endogenous proteases and their endogenous inhibitors in sleep regulation. In th

Medullary respiratory neural activity during hypoxia in NREM and REM sleep in the cat.

Intact unanesthetized cats hyperventilate in response to hypocapnic hypoxia in both wakefulness and sleep. This hyperventilation is caused by increases in diaphragmatic activity during inspiration and expiration. In this study, we recorded 120 medullary respiratory neurons during sleep in hypoxia. Our goal was to understand how these neurons change their activity to increase breathing efforts and frequency in response to hypoxia. We found that the response of medullary respiratory neurons to hypoxia was variable. While the activity of a small majority of inspiratory (58%) and expiratory (56%)

Sulpiride, a D2/D3 blocker, reduces cataplexy but not REM sleep in canine narcolepsy.

Cataplexy, an abnormal manifestation of REM sleep atonia, is currently treated with antidepressants. These medications also reduce physiological REM sleep and induce nocturnal sleep disturbances. Because a recent work on canine narcolepsy suggests that the mechanisms for triggering cataplexy are different from those for REM sleep, we hypothesized that compounds which act specifically on cataplexy, but not on REM sleep, could be developed. Canine studies also suggest that the dopamine D2/D3 receptor mechanism is specifically involved in the regulation of cataplexy, but little evidence suggests

Neocortical and hippocampal electrical activities are similar in spontaneous and cholinergic-induced REM sleep.

Neocortical and hippocampal EEG power spectra obtained during REM-like sleep induced by unilateral carbachol microinjections (0.01 M, 0.02 M and 0.2 M; volume 20 nl) into the ventral part of the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis have been compared with EEG power spectra obtained during spontaneous REM sleep. Our findings indicate that neocortical and hippocampal electrical activities during the REM-like state generated by carbachol delivery in this pontine region mimic those present in spontaneous REM sleep.

[Phasic activity of REM sleep in newborns and infants and its relationship with apnea episodes].

When the apnea hypothesis turned to be an explanation for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) many authors tried to find if near-miss or apparent life-threatening events (ALTE) could be markers of SIDS. It was suggested that phasic REM activity is associated with increased respiratory neuron activity and prevents prolonged apnea in near-miss SIDS. In a previous retrospective study with newborns we did not confirm these results, nevertheless we had several babies with serious neurological disturbances. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship of phasic activity (rapid eyes movement

Dose dependent inhibition of REM sleep in normal volunteers by biperiden, a muscarinic antagonist.

We tested the effect of biperiden (2, 4, and 8 mg per os 30 min before bedtime) on the polygraphically recorded sleep of normal volunteers (n = 8). Biperiden is a cholinergic, muscarinic receptor antagonist that may preferentially block the M1 receptor subtype. Compared with placebo, biperiden significantly prolonged rapid eye movement (REM) latency and suppressed REM sleep time and REM percentage in a dose-dependent manner. These REM suppressing effects of biperiden are similar to those previously reported with scopolamine and other nonselective muscarinic receptor antagonists. Because of unc

REM sleep and cortisol response to the cholinergic challenge with RS 86 in normals and depressives.

The influence of the muscarinic agonist RS 86 on rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis was studied in healthy subjects and in patients with a major depression. In both groups, RS 86 induced a shortening of REM latency and an increase in REM sleep; these effects were more pronounced in the depressives than in the controls. This finding supports the assumption that in depression the REM sleep regulating neurons are hypersensitive to cholinergic stimuli. However, neither in the healthy subjects nor in the depressed patients was an RS 86 induced inc

Smartphone-derived digital motor measures to monitor progression in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder.

Sensitive and scalable biomarkers are critical for tracking progression during the prodromal phase of Parkinson's disease, particularly in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). We evaluated the Roche PD Mobile Application version 2, a smartphone-based platform, in 51 individuals with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD, 89 patients with early Parkinson's disease, and 22 healthy controls over 12 months. Participants completed daily active tasks generating validated digital summary measures. Adherence was high (73%). Baseline digital bradykinesia scores discriminated between groups (p < 0.00

Distinct metabolomic and proteomic signatures in Parkinson's disease patients with REM sleep behavior disorder.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is the most specific prodromal marker of Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting 40-50% of PD patients. PD with RBD (RBD-PD) represents a clinically aggressive subtype characterized by more severe motor and nonmotor symptoms, prominent autonomic dysfunction, and accelerated disease progression; however, its underlying pathogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we integrated multiplatform metabolomics and proteomics with precise clinical phenotyping to delineate molecular signatures in plasma across different PD subtypes. Our analyses demonstrated

Effect of melatonin treatment on oxidative stress-related parameters in REM sleep-deprived rats.

Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD) is associated with increased oxidative stress, characterized by disruption of the oxidant-antioxidant balance and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Melatonin may act as a potential modulator of REM-SD-associated oxidative alterations through its circadian regulatory effects, direct ROS scavenging activity, and support of endogenous antioxidant defense mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of melatonin treatment administered during the six-day REM-SD period or during the recovery period following REM-SD on oxidative stres

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Following Focal Brainstem Ischemia: A Case Series with Polysomnographic Characterization.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by dream-enacting behaviors occurring in the presence of REM sleep without atonia (RWA) and is most commonly associated with synucleinopathies. Structural lesions of the brainstem have been reported as a potential substrate of secondary RBD, yet polysomnographically confirmed cases remain sparsely documented. We report two patients with focal ischemic brainstem lesions and clinically suspected RBD who underwent detailed neurological evaluation, neuroimaging, and video-polysomnography. In both patients, polysomnography demo
