PURPOSE: The inflammatory response during Staphylococcus keratitis was analyzed biochemically and histologically to determine the source of the neutrophils infiltrating the tear film and cornea.
METHODS: Rabbit eyes were swabbed and then examined by slit-lamp microscopy at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 hours after intracorneal inoculation with Staphylococcus aureus. Infection of cynomolgus monkeys with microfilariae (Mf) of Onchocerca lienalis was studied as a model for human ocular onchocerciasis. Normal monkeys and immunized monkeys were given intracorneal/subconjunctival, intracameral, or intravitreal injections of Mf or bovine serum albumin (control). Congenital ichthyoses (CI) are rare genetic skin keratinisation diseases characterised by generalised scaling and a variable degree of erythema and hyperkeratosis. Ocular involvement includes the eyelids, conjunctiva and all layers of the cornea. Ophthalmic input should include regular slit lamp review with the primary aim to prevent a corneal epithelial defect, secondary bacterial infection, scarring or perforation. This review highlights the current literature regarding ophthalmic findings and management of CI.
