Injury risk factors in young soccer players detected by a multivariate survival model.

Soccer is a popular game practiced all around the world by teenagers. However, despite being a relatively safe sport, muscle-strain injuries during competitive matches are common compared to other team-sports. Few studies, to date, have investigated risk factors for soccer injuries using a multivariate survival model (e.g., Cox regression). The aim of this study was to use a multivariate survival model to investigate factors associated with an increased risk of thigh muscle strains, in young soccer players. A multivariate Cox regression was used to evaluate survival probability predictors for …

A soccer victim: late rupture of the ascending aorta after violent physical trauma.

A 56-year-old man without previous medical history or risk factors for coronary artery disease, presented with chest pain 2 weeks after violent blunt chest trauma. He was as a spectator, beaten and kicked almost to death during an amateur soccer match. Because of embarrassment, this was denied till shortly after his death. Shortly before the patient died, thoracic CT-scan showed a dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta in association with pericardial and bilateral pleural effusion. He suddenly died in-hospital due to heart tamponade secondary to rupture of the aneurysm into the pericardial…

Lumbar Disc Changes on Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Asymptomatic Elite Male Soccer Players.

BACKGROUND: Soccer places substantial mechanical demands on the lumbar spine through repeated sprinting, rotation, and contact-related loading. Although lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities are frequently observed in athletes, data studying the prevalence and distribution of lumbar disc pathology in this population remain limited. HYPOTHESIS: Asymptomatic lumbar disc herniation may be common in elite male soccer players and disc herniation burden may not necessarily be associated with lumbar-related missed training sessions. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective observationa…

Foot-strike angle affects performance and injury risk during cutting in soccer athletes.

Female soccer athletes experience elevated rates of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injuries, particularly during cutting tasks that require rapid energy absorption and generation at the knee. This study examined the effects of sex and fatigue on knee joint power and foot‑strike angle during unanticipated cutting in cleated footwear. Twenty athletes (10 M/10F) completed unanticipated cuts before and after a standardized fatigue protocol. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected, and knee joint power and foot‑strike angle were calculated using standard inverse dynamics. Neither sex nor …
