Early socio-communicative forms and functions in typical Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe neurological disorder characterized by a developmental regression in motor and speech-language domains. There is, however, limited research on socio-communicative development of affected children before the onset of regression. We analyzed audio-video recordings made by parents of six 9- to 12-month old girls later diagnosed with typical RTT, applying the Inventory of Potential Communicative Acts (IPCA) to identify early communicative forms and functions. Each girl used at least one communicative form (e.g., body movement, eye gaze, or vocalizations) to gain att

Acoustic features and social cognition in schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Although prior studies have observed speech alterations in schizophrenia, minimal research has focused on this in schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), despite impairments observed in social communication and function. SPD is a disorder within the schizophrenia spectrum, but individuals are typically antipsychotic naïve and lack a history of psychiatric hospitalizations. The current study examined acoustic features extracted from an open-ended interview in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and healthy controls. METHODS: Twenty-seven individuals with SPD, 36 ind

Benefits of Fenofibrate in prenatal valproic acid-induced autism spectrum disorder related phenotype in rats.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with two major behavioral symptoms i.e. repetitive behavior and social-communication impairment. The unknown etiology of ASD is responsible for the difficulty in identifying the possible therapeutic modulators for ASD. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant drug in both human and rodents with teratogenic effects during pregnancy. Therefore, prenatal exposure of VPA induced autism spectrum disorder like phenotypes in both human and rodents. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α) is widely localized in the brain

Rates of depression and anxiety in urban and rural Canada.

BACKGROUND: Studies of urban-rural differences in rates of non-psychotic psychiatric disorders have produced contradictory results, with some finding higher urban rates and others no difference. AIMS: This study aimed to compare geographic variability of rates of depression and three anxiety disorders in a large, random community sample of Canadian residents. METHOD: Data from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey 1.2 were analyzed, using a four-category classification of urban-rurality. RESULTS: Significant bivariate urban-rural differences were found for age, marital status, country o

Delineating the profile of autism spectrum disorder characteristics in Cornelia de Lange and Fragile X syndromes.

An atypical presentation of autism spectrum disorder is noted in Cornelia de Lange and Fragile X syndromes, but there are few detailed empirical descriptions. Participants in this study were individuals with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (n  =  130, M age  =  17.19), Fragile X syndrome (n  =  182, M age  =  16.94), and autism spectrum disorder (n  =  142, M age  =  15.19), who were comparable on chronological age. Using the Social Communication Questionnaire, the proportion meeting cutoff for autism spectrum disorder and autism was 78.6%, and 45.6%, respectively, in Cornelia de Lange syndrome and

A case of mistaken diagnoses: diagnostic and management challenges in a case of adult autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is frequently identified in children but is often unrecognised in adults. ASD is characterised by difficulties in social interaction, communication and restricted interests, but other presentations are common, especially in adults. This report describes a 34-year-old man with a history of multiple psychiatric diagnoses including generalised anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder and panic disorder. He was diagnosed with ASD in his early 30s and engaged in a targeted treatment plan, including rationalisation of medications, supportive therapy and occupational

[Autism. Neurobiological aspects].

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a neurobiological basis, characterized by a qualitative disturbance in social interaction and communication, associated with restricted interests and stereotyped behaviors. The genesis of autism cannot be interpreted through a single theory, and we can't compartmentalize brain areas as the only ones responsible for it. Among the neurobiological bases we can include: deficit in the social reward system, which generates poor social initiative; dysfunctions and disorders of the amygdala and the mirror neuron system, related to compromised empathy and s

Characterizing social communication among minimally verbal children with autism: An application of item response theory.

Minimally verbal children constitute a portion of the autism spectrum. The paucity of proper measurement tools that sensitively and accurately assess behaviors has been one limiting factor in the improved knowledge of these children. Short of creating and validating a new measurement tool for this subpopulation, this study took an alternative and more immediate approach: conduct a secondary data analysis and examine an existing social communication measure, the Early Social Communication Scales (ESCS), with item response theory. The final sample consisted of 453 minimally verbal children culle

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Show Impairments During Dynamic Versus Static Grip-force Tracking.

Impairments in visuomotor integration (VMI) may contribute to anomalous development of motor, as well as social-communicative, skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it is relatively unknown whether VMI impairments are specific to children with ASD versus children with other neurodevelopmental disorders. As such, this study addressed the hypothesis that children with ASD, but not those in other clinical control groups, would show greater deficits in high-VMI dynamic grip-force tracking versus low-VMI static presentation. Seventy-nine children, aged 7-17 years, partici

The association between the social and communication elements of autism, and repetitive/restrictive behaviours and activities: a review of the literature.

Research continues to try and pinpoint the etiological role of particular genes and brain structure in autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), but despite a host of biological, genetic and neuropsychological research, the symptom profile of pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) are not yet linked to etiological theory. Debate continues around whether or not there is one single dimension that incorporates the three criteria domains of social difficulties, communication deficits and repetitive or restrictive interests and behaviours as a unitary 'ASD' concept, or whether PDD as they are currently d

Using AAC video visual scene displays to increase participation and communication within a volunteer activity for adolescents with complex communication needs.

Volunteer activities can provide opportunities to learn new skills, build social networks, and contribute to enhanced self-esteem. Volunteering also provides a positive contribution to society, and an opportunity to participate in activities that may differ from those in paid employment. People with severe disabilities and complex communication needs, however, may face significant barriers in participating and communicating in volunteer activities. A multiple-probe-across-participants, single-case experimental design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of videos with integrated visual scene

Atomoxetine in autism spectrum disorder: no effects on social functioning; some beneficial effects on stereotyped behaviors, inappropriate speech, and fear of change.

UNLABELLED: Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the short-term treatment effects of atomoxetine on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms in children and adolescents with both ASD and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: A total of 97 patients 6-17 years of age, with ASD and ADHD, were treated with 1.2 mg/kg/day of atomoxetine during an 8 week double-blind placebo-controlled period. Here, we investigated effects on two parent-based secondary outcome measures, the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Children's Social Behavior Questionn

Asperger's disorder and Williams syndrome: a case report.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder caused by the hemizygous microdeletion in chromosome 7q11.23. It is characterized by dysmorphic face, cardiovascular disease, idiopathic hypercalcemia, mental retardation, and an uneven profile of cognitive-linguistic abilities and deficits. The presence of autistic features in individuals with WS is a controversial issue. While there are reports that describe them as overly friendly with excessive sociability and good empathic skills, some recent studies focus more on the qualitative impairment of their social abilities. Here, we report the clinica

Description and immediate impacts of a preventive intervention for conduct problems.

A population-based randomized intervention trial for the prevention of conduct problems (i.e., oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder) is described. The LIFT (Linking the Interests of Families and Teachers) intervention was designed for all first- and fifth-grade elementary school boys and girls and their families living in at-risk neighborhoods characterized by high rates of juvenile delinquency. The 10-week intervention strategy was carefully targeted at proximal and malleable antecedents in three social domains that were identified by a developmental model of conduct problems. F

[ESSENCE gathers the diagnoses into a whole].

Co-existence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, tic disorders, developmental coordination disorder, language disorder, learning problems, and autism spectrum disorder and sharing of symptoms across disorders, contribute to the typical clinical presentation in child psychiatry as well as in developmen-tal medicine. The acronym ESSENCE refers to Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations. Affected children are brought for clinical assessment because of impairing symptoms that raise concern before the age of about 5 year

Social anxiety in late adolescence: the importance of early childhood language impairment.

Social phobia is a common, highly comorbid, poorly understood and relatively understudied condition. The origins of social phobia share familial and biological features common with those of other anxiety disorders, but seldom have precursors of the fear of social communication been examined as a possible pathway to social phobia. Here we examine the role of early childhood language impairment as an antecedent to social phobia in late adolescence. Participants in a prospective longitudinal community study identified as having language impairment at age 5 and matched controls were followed up at

Investigating a theatre-based intervention for Indigenous youth with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: Exploration d'une intervention basée sur le théâtre auprès de jeunes Autochtones atteints du syndrome d'alcoolisme fœtal.

BACKGROUND: Theatre-based interventions use artistic media to facilitate social and emotional awareness and have therapeutic benefits for persons with developmental disabilities and mental health problems. The role of these interventions with Indigenous youth who have emotional, behavioural, and cognitive sequelae related to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) has not been explored. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and acceptability of a theatre-based approach for facilitating social communication and engagement in youth with FASD. METHOD: Participants wer

On the Spectrum: High-Functioning Autism and Its Contemporary Relevance.

With publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) in 2013, autism's prevalence in the United States nearly doubled to more than 2% of the population. In reconceptualizing the condition, DSM-5 collapsed 4 diagnoses into 1 diagnosis: autism spectrum disorder. What the 4 had in common were deficits in 2 broad areas: restricted, repetitive behaviors or interests; and deficits in social communication. Three of the 4 were severe forms easily recognized in childhood. The fourth, constituting most of the increase in prevalence, was Asperger disorder,

Dysarthria and idiopathic Parkinson's disease: a current overview of the relationship between speech impairment and quality of life.

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and impairment of automatic movements. Dysarthria is one of the most common manifestations, significantly impacting communication and quality of life (QoL). The Living with Dysarthria (LwD) questionnaire is a tool developed to assess the functional and psychosocial impact of this condition, providing a patient-centered measure of symptom severity. This article aims to present a literature review on the impact of dysarthria in IPD and the use of t
