Extracurricular activities and refugee students in Turkish educational settings: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Turkey hosts the world's largest refugee population, and extracurricular activities have increasingly been positioned as potential supports for refugee students' psycho-social adjustment, school belonging, and peer integration. However, a comprehensive synthesis of ECA-related outcomes for refugee students in Turkish educational settings remains absent from the literature. This systematic review examined the associations between extracurricular activity participation and refugee student outcomes across psychological, social, and educational settings-related domains. Following PRISM

Does Child Likeability Mediate the Link Between Academic Competence and Depressive Symptoms in Early Elementary School?

The present study investigated the role of teacher-rated likeability as a mediator of the relation between low academic competence and depressive symptoms in elementary-aged children. Analyses focused on a sample of children at risk for child maltreatment living in Hawaii (n = 380). Structural equation modeling supported the hypothesized negative relations between academic competence in first grade and depressive symptoms in third grade controlling for correlated constructs (e.g., baseline social avoidance, parenting stress, externalizing problems, and internalizing symptoms). Teacher-rated li

Self-control and social support in the link between academic pressure anxiety depression and social media addiction in college students.

The deep integration of social media into daily routines has intensified concerns about problematic social media use among students, adversely affecting both educational outcomes and psychological well-being. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and Cognitive-behavioral Theory, this study investigates the roles of academic pressure, anxiety, and depression in the development of social media addiction, with particular attention to the mediating effect of self-control and the moderating role of social support. A survey of 900 college students collected data on these key variables. Structural equat

Atypical social behaviors in mouse models for Rett syndrome.

Social behavior depends on neural circuits that encode social identity, memory, and motivational value. These processes engage coordinated activity across hippocampal subregions, medial prefrontal cortex, thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei, as well as the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic systems that regulate internal state, hierarchy, and social reward. In Rett syndrome and MeCP2-deficient rodent models, basic sociability is often preserved, alongside impairments in social memory, dominance behavior, aggression control, and flexible social responding, frequently accompanied by anxiety-like and se

CAPABLE Care + Connect: A Qualitative Study to Adapt CAPABLE for Home-Based Primary Care and Foster Social Connection.

Fostering social connection among homebound older adults and their care partners presents a distinct challenge. Evidence on strategies to address social isolation and functional impairment for homebound individuals is limited. This study aims to inform adaptation and implementation of the CAPABLE program within a home-based primary care practice. We conducted interviews with older adults, care partners, CAPABLE clinicians, and home-based primary care staff (n = 12). We explored factors influencing social connection and program implementation for a home-based primary care population. We identif

The integration of spina bifida children--are their needs being met?

After eleven years of vigorously promoting integration, the majority of Sheffield Children's Hospital spina bifida patients are now successfully integrated. A parallel study in Greater Manchester confirmed that parents, teachers and the spina bifida children are overwhelmingly in favour of integration. A large number of children were transferred from special to ordinary schools, and very few had to be transferred back to segregated schooling. The parents found substantial social and educational advantages in integration, together with good levels of involvement with their child's education. Th

The beat of social cognition: Exploring the role of heart rate variability as marker of mentalizing abilities.

There is a long-standing debate on the influence of physiological signals on social behavior. Recent studies suggested that heart rate variability (HRV) may be a marker of social cognitive processes. However, this evidence is preliminary and limited to laboratory studies. In this study, 25 participants were assessed with a social cognition battery and asked to wear a wearable device measuring HRV for 6 consecutive days. The results showed that reduced HRV correlated with higher hostility attribution bias. However, no relationship was found between HRV and other social cognitive measures includ

Risk and protective correlates of suicidality in the military health and well-being project.

Suicidality disproportionately affects Veterans, and in 2020 the Military Health and Well-Being Project was conducted in part to study the link between risk and protective constructs with suicidality among Veterans. In the present study, we investigate the relative contribution of risk (i.e., military self-stigma, daily stress, combat exposure, substance use, traumatic brain injury, and moral injury) and protective constructs (i.e., social integration, social contribution, public service motivation, purpose and meaning, and help-seeking) with suicidality. Using cross-sectional Pearson correlat…

Beyond the ideal: Tensions and realities of social work in palliative care.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is a foundational principle of palliative care, yet social workers within these teams often encounter professional marginalization, role ambiguity, and systemic barriers to full integration. This study explores the experiences of palliative care social workers in Ontario, Canada, focusing on the tensions they navigate within interdisciplinary teams. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 social workers practicing in hospital and community-based palliative care settings. Thematic analysis identified three interrelat

[Job integration as a goal of psychiatric therapy].

The social implications and long term consequences of mental disorders regarding sick days at work, unemployment rates and early retirement are considerable. Outcome in psychiatric treatment should be measured not only by reduction of psychopathological symptoms and improvement of subjective well-being respectively quality of life but also by taking social integration into account. Job inclusion could become a crucial factor indicating successful therapy. It is remarkable that there has been so little focus on the links between reduction of psychopathological symptoms and competitive working s…

Neural dynamics driving audio-visual integration in autism.

Audio-visual (AV) integration plays a crucial role in supporting social functions and communication in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, behavioral findings remain mixed and, importantly, little is known about the underlying neurophysiological bases. Studies in neurotypical adults indicate that oscillatory brain activity in different frequencies subserves AV integration, pointing to a central role of (i) individual alpha frequency (IAF), which would determine the width of the cross-modal binding window; (ii) pre-/peri-stimulus theta oscillations, which would reflect the expectation of A
