COVID-19 and (ir)responsible (im)mobility: Reading counter-practices through Levinas and Derrida.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected virtually all daily activities, relations and practices. People were expected to act responsibly by following social distancing, masking, sanitation and stay-home rules. The prevailing ethos of the time was that to protect others, one must first protect oneself. By examining the creative modalities through which (a few) people in Paris circumvented mobility restrictions to help and support those in need, this article investigates the relation between (im)mobility and (ir)responsibility. Is mobility, during a time of forced immobility, an irresponsible act? Wh

Muscular strength, mobility in daily life and mental wellbeing among older adult Inuit in Greenland. The Greenland population health survey 2018.

The purpose was to analyse the association of muscular strength, muscle pain and reduced mobility in daily life with mental wellbeing among older Inuit men and women in Greenland. Data (N = 846) was collected as part of a countrywide cross-sectional health survey in 2018. Hand grip strength and 30-seconds chair stand test were measured according to established protocols. Mobility in daily life was assessed by five questions about the ability to perform specific activities of daily living. Mental wellbeing was assessed by questions about self-rated health, life satisfaction and Goldberg's Gener

User experiences, unmet needs, and access barriers to lower limb orthoses in India.

PURPOSE: Assistive products can enhance the social functioning of an individual with disability and could offer support for meaningful engagement in society. The research paper focuses on users' perspective to identify ease and comfortability of use of assistive products which enhances mobility. Improved mobility is an important tool to enable people with disabilities' integration into society and in the working environment. The study focused particularly on use of lower limb orthoses (commonly referred to locally as walking callipers) by people with locomotor disabilities having functional li

Recommendations about Pregnancy from Women with Mobility Disability to Their Peers.

BACKGROUND: Although growing numbers of women with mobility disability are becoming pregnant and desiring motherhood, relatively little is known about their pregnancy experiences or what they might recommend to other women with mobility disability contemplating pregnancy. METHODS: Using a semistructured, open-ended interview protocol, we conducted 2-hour telephone interviews with 22 women who had a significant mobility disability before becoming pregnant and had delivered babies within the prior 10 years. We recruited most interviewees through online social networks. We used NVivo software to

Mobile Phone, Computer, and Internet Use Among Older Homeless Adults: Results from the HOPE HOME Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The median age of single homeless adults is approximately 50 years. Older homeless adults have poor social support and experience a high prevalence of chronic disease, depression, and substance use disorders. Access to mobile phones and the internet could help lower the barriers to social support, social services, and medical care; however, little is known about access to and use of these by older homeless adults. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the access to and use of mobile phones, computers, and internet among a cohort of 350 homeless adults over the age of 50 years.

Heterogeneous Influence of Frailty Phenotypes in Age-Related Hearing Loss and Tinnitus in Chinese Older Adults: An Explorative Study.

BACKGROUND: Fried physical frailty, with mobility frailty and non-motor frailty phenotypes, is a heterogeneous syndrome. The coexistence of the two phenotypes and cognitive impairment is referred to as cognitive frailty (CF). It remains unknown whether frailty phenotype has a different association with hearing loss (HL) and tinnitus. METHODS: Of the 5,328 community-dwelling older adults, 429 participants aged ≥58 years were enrolled in the study. The participants were divided into robust, mobility, and non-mobility frailty, mobility and non-mobility CF (subdivided into reversible and potentia

A resilient battery electric bus transit system configuration.

Electric mobility is fundamental to combat climate change and attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-11). However, electric mobility necessitates a seamless integration between power and transportation systems, as the resiliency of both systems is becoming far more interdependent. Here, we focus on disruption to Battery Electric Bus (BEB) transit system charging infrastructure and offer a resilient BEB transit system planning model. The proposed model optimizes the BEB system costs while ensuring the system's robustness against simultaneous charging station failures. I

A data-driven metapopulation model for the Belgian COVID-19 epidemic: assessing the impact of lockdown and exit strategies.

BACKGROUND: In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several countries adopted measures of social distancing to a different degree. For many countries, after successfully curbing the initial wave, lockdown measures were gradually lifted. In Belgium, such relief started on May 4th with phase 1, followed by several subsequent phases over the next few weeks. METHODS: We analysed the expected impact of relaxing stringent lockdown measures taken according to the phased Belgian exit strategy. We developed a stochastic, data-informed, meta-population model that accounts for mixing and mobility

Disappearance and Re-Emergence of Influenza during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Association with Infection Control Measures.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the influenza virus had a very low prevalence, and in many areas, outbreaks were almost non-existent. In this study, the associations between infection control measures taken for COVID-19 and the global disappearance of the influenza virus were investigated. The detection rate of influenza from baseline was investigated during four seasons (12 weeks from epidemiological week 49 in 2020 and 2021 and 12 weeks from epidemiological week 23 in 2020 and 2021) in each country participating in the surveillance system of the World Health Organiza

Internet use, income mobility and the expansion of the rural middle-income group: Evidence from China.

The expansion of the rural middle-income group has been a global focus as it contributes to narrowing income gaps and reducing social inequality. Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this study examines the impact of Internet use on the mobility of rural low-income groups to the middle-income group from the perspective of income mobility. Controlling for household and provincial-level variables, the results of this study indicate that Internet use significantly promotes the mobility of rural low-income groups to the middle-income group, thereby facilitating the expansion of t

Late life depression and incident activity limitations: influence of gender and symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders, especially depression, are one of the principal causes of disablement. Previous research has been limited partly due to the failure to take into account sub-syndromal states and the very large number of candidate mediating and confounding factors. METHODS: Longitudinal associations between baseline depressive symptomatology and activity limitations were examined in a community-dwelling elderly cohort of 3191 participants. Mixed logistic models were used to determine associations between mild or severe depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depressi

A protocol for randomized controlled trial on multidisciplinary interventions for mobility limitation in the older adults (M-MobiLE).

BACKGROUND: Mobility limitation-the loss of exercise capacity or independent living ability-is a common geriatric syndrome in older adults. As a potentially reversible precursor to disability, mobility limitation is influenced by various factors. Moreover, its complex physiological mechanism hinders good therapeutic outcomes with a single-factor intervention. Most hospitals have not incorporated the diagnosis and evaluation of mobility limitation into medical routines nor developed a multidisciplinary team (MDT) treatment plan. We aim to conduct a clinical trial titled "A Multidisciplinary-tea

Concurrent validity of the Swedish version of the life-space assessment questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: The Life-Space Assessment (LSA), developed in the USA, is an instrument focusing on mobility with respect to reaching different areas defined as life-spaces, extending from the room where the person sleeps to mobility outside one's hometown. A newly translated Swedish version of the LSA (LSA-S) has been tested for test-retest reliability, but the validity remains to be tested. The purpose of the present study was to examine the concurrent validity of the LSA-S, by comparing and correlating the LSA scores to other measures of mobility. METHOD: The LSA was included in a population-b
