Dynamic functional connectivity analysis reveals decreased variability of the default-mode network in developing autistic brain.

Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests that abnormal functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) contributes to the social-cognitive deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although most previous studies relied on conventional functional connectivity methods, which assume that connectivity patterns remain constant over time, understanding the temporal dynamics of functional connectivity during rest may provide new insights into the dysfunction of the DMN in ASD. In this work, dynamic functional connectivity analysis based on sliding time window correlation was applied to

Mapping the psychosocial network of Kenyan adolescents: the pivotal role of loneliness and gender-specific pathways.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a critical yet understudied determinant of adolescent mental health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While its prevalence and impact have been well-documented in Western contexts, little is known about its role within the psychosocial networks of youth in many African contexts, where social structures and gender norms may diverge sharply. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional network analysis using data from 1,445 Kenyan secondary school students. Participants completed validated self-report measures of depression, anxie

Diverse coping strategies for food insecurity: A qualitative study of economically precarious households in India in the context of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: The study examines how households in two Indian states managed food insecurity in the context of COVID-19, focusing on differences between migrant and non-migrant households in rural and urban areas. METHODS: We integrate Davies' framework of coping strategies with the Sustainable Livelihoods and Resilience frameworks to analyze how coping capacity is shaped by structural inequalities, existing resources, social networks, and access to entitlements. Between December 2022 and March 2023, we conducted 343 semi-structured interviews in 86 households in Uttar Pradesh and Goa, purposive

Abnormal functional connectivity of default mode sub-networks in autism spectrum disorder patients.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by deficits in social and communication processes. Recent data suggest that altered functional connectivity (FC), i.e. synchronous brain activity, might contribute to these deficits. Of specific interest is the FC integrity of the default mode network (DMN), a network active during passive resting states and cognitive processes related to social deficits seen in ASD, e.g. Theory of Mind. We investigated the role of altered FC of default mode sub-networks (DM-SNs) in 16 patients with high-functioning ASD compared to 16 matched healthy controls

Attachment Styles Predict Personal Network Structure Better Than Big Five Traits.

Research on individual differences in social network analysis has primarily focused on how personality traits influence individuals' positions and behaviors within social structures. However, attachment research has consistently shown that attachment styles strongly affect how people form and maintain their interpersonal relationships. This study examined how attachment styles relate to different types of individual personal networks. A classification of personal networks was developed based on structural indicators of cohesion, transitivity, and subgroup configuration, among other measures. D

Functional and structural clustering of social relationship layers among college students for link prediction with applications to perceived drinking networks.

Studies on college drinking-a behavior associated with health risks and reduced productivity-often rely on broadly defined peer or friendship networks. Yet, friendship networks can be further divided into more specific relational types, and the associations between such diverse social ties and drinking ties remain poorly understood. This study adopts a multilayer network framework to conduct a fine-grained examination of ten distinct types of social networks (i.e., layers)-including friendship, leadership, emotional support, and perceived drinking-by analyzing their structural similarity acros

Community networks of services for pregnant and parenting women with problematic substance use.

Integrated treatment programs for pregnant and parenting women who use substances operate at the intersection of multiple service systems, including specialized substance use services, the broader health system, child protection, and social services. Our objectives were to describe the composition and structure of community care networks surrounding integrated treatment programs in selected communities in Ontario, Canada. We used a two-stage snowball method to collect network data from 5 purposively selected integrated treatment programs in communities in Ontario. Front-line staff with integra

Exploring the Effect of Social Media and Group Chat Use on Social Isolation Among the Older Adults: A Study in Urban Japan.

Background: Although research has been conducted on older adults and social media, the relationship between social media use and social isolation remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between social isolation and the frequency of use of social media and group chats. Methods: We measured social isolation using the Japanese version of the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6) in 411 older adults people living in urban areas. We used a questionnaire to survey their use of social networking services (SNS) such as LINE, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, and their

Rest Assured: The Association of Structural, Functional Support, and Loneliness With Subjective Sleep Health.

Sleep is increasingly understood as a socially embedded phenomenon. This study examined how structural and functional aspects of social support, as well as loneliness, relate to sleep health in a German sample of middle-aged adults (N = 5388). Drawing on the socio-ecological model of sleep health, we assessed the contributions of social support dimensions while accounting for age, sex, and socioeconomic status, as well as psychological covariates. The results of the binary logistic regression showed that functional support (ESSI), friend network size (LSNS6), and loneliness (CES-D item 14) sig

"Will you need this health at all? Will you be alive?": using the bioecological model of mass trauma to understand HIV care experiences during the war in Ukraine.

INTRODUCTION: Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has severely impacted the healthcare system, including the provision of HIV care. The ongoing war is a human-caused mass trauma, a severe ecological and psychosocial disruption that greatly exceeds the coping capacity of the community. The bioecological model of mass trauma builds on Bronfenbrenner's concept of interaction between nested systems to argue that social context determines the impact of life events on the individual and how an individual responds. This paper uses the bioecological model of mass trauma to explore the impact

Integrative gene network analysis provides novel regulatory relationships, genetic contributions and susceptible targets in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of diseases exhibiting impairment in social drive, communication/language skills and stereotyped behaviors. Though an increased number of candidate genes and molecular interactions have been identified by various approaches, the pathogenesis remains elusive. Based on clinical observations, data from accessible GWAS and expression datasets we identified ASDs gene candidates. Integrative gene network and a novel CNV-centric Node Network (CNN) analysis method highlighted ASDs-associated key elements and biological processes. Functional analysis identif

Evolution of networks in virtual reality: A scalable framework for studying social dynamics of small groups.

Immersive technologies provide new possibilities to study social dynamics. In this paper, we develop a methodological framework for identifying and describing the evolution of group networks in virtual reality (VR). Leveraging longitudinal data on participants' interpersonal distances obtained in a collaborative virtual environment during a university course about VR we demonstrate how network methods can be applied and used to test propositions of social capital theory. Specifically, we use stochastic actor-oriented models (SAOMs) to explore the formation and change of social ties over time.

Producing Child-Centered Interventions: Social Network Factors Related to the Quality of Professional Development for Teachers of Autistic Students.

Autistic students benefit from child-centered goals that align with evidence-based practices (EBPs) that meet their individualized needs, however, most teachers are not trained in how to implement autism-specific EBPs. The challenges do not lie with teachers alone. Professional development (PD) providers, such as district or regional autism experts who train and coach teachers on how to implement autism-specific EBPs, face barriers accessing the needed supports to conduct high-quality PD and lack experience with individualizing their methods for training and coaching teachers. When PD provider

Seasonal changes in social cohesion among males in a same-sex primate group.

Male-male interactions in mixed-sex groups of social mammals are typically characterized by a mix of hostility and affiliation, as a result of inherent conflicts over mating opportunities, and the costs and benefits of social alliances, co-operative behaviors, and coalitionary defense. In species of nonhuman primates that form all-male groups, it is still unclear how the tradeoffs between the benefits of forming an all-male group and the cost of male-male competition in seeking mating opportunities with females in bisexual groups influence social cohesion in different seasons. Here, we used so
