Social capital II: determinants of economic connectedness.

Low levels of social interaction across class lines have generated widespread concern1-4 and are associated with worse outcomes, such as lower rates of upward income mobility4-7. Here we analyse the determinants of cross-class interaction using data from Facebook, building on the analysis in our companion paper7. We show that about half of the social disconnection across socioeconomic lines-measured as the difference in the share of high-socioeconomic status (SES) friends between people with low and high SES-is explained by differences in exposure to people with high SES in groups such as scho

[Quality of life, subjective health status and health and life satisfaction in rheumatoid arthritis].

A Japanese version of Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales (AIMS) was developed after the original AIMS Version 2 and utilized for Quality of Life (QOL) measurement in 691 patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Various medical (physical and laboratory) examinations, which are widely used in the clinical settings for the assessment of RA activity and severity, were also performed by physicians. Interrelationships between QOL, patient subjective health status, and health and life satisfaction were analyzed with the following results: 1: The effect of QOL impairment by RA upon patients' subjecti

Executive functions and brain morphology of male and female dominant and subordinate cichlid fish.

BACKGROUND: Living in a social dominance hierarchy presents different benefits and challenges for dominant and subordinate males and females, which might in turn affect their cognitive needs. Despite the extensive research on social dominance in group-living species, there is still a knowledge gap regarding how social status impacts brain morphology and cognitive abilities. METHODS: Here, we tested male and female dominants and subordinates of Neolamprologus pulcher, a social cichlid fish species with size-based hierarchy. We ran three executive cognitive function tests for cognitive flexibil

Depression as a Function of Social Support in Transgender and Cisgender Individuals with Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

This study focused on the relationships among social support, self-esteem, and depression in transgender and cisgender individuals suffering from an incurable or curable sexually transmitted disease. Data were collected from 210 participants with an STI using a semi-structured interview along with culturally adapted standardized instruments. Results indicated no differences between transgender and cisgender groups in depression, although there were large differences in social support and self-esteem. Preliminary regression analysis identified only STI type and duration of STI as significant pr

Inequalities in healthy life expectancy by social class and area type: England, 2001-03.

BACKGROUND: Healthy life expectancy (HLE) is an important indicator which combines longevity with health status. This article examines inequalities in HLE by socio-economic position in England, and between Local Authorities (LAs) in the deprived 'Spearhead group' and other LAs. METHODS: Census and vital event data available from the ONS Longitudinal Study were used to calculate estimates of HLE based on general health status for each Registrar General's Social Class (RGSC) in 2001-03, in England as a whole and within the 'Spearhead group' and non-Spearhead LAs. RESULTS: A predominantly linea

Association of social determinants of health and physical functioning among breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to address the relationship between social determinants of health (both individual and neighborhood levels) to understand more fully how social conditions are associated with physical functioning among breast cancer survivors (BCS). METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a national sample of breast cancer survivors recruited via Institutional Review Board-approved social media (i.e., Facebook) and online cancer-affiliated resource sites (e.g., Pink Ribbon Connection, Dr. Susan Love Foundation). BCS provided their address and demographic factors an

Mediators of the Association Between Child Education and Adult Health.

IMPORTANCE: Educational attainment is a key social determinant of cardiometabolic disease in adulthood, yet knowledge about the pathways through which educational experiences in childhood may shape cardiometabolic health is limited. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether associations between educational experiences in childhood and cardiometabolic health in adulthood are mediated by adult socioeconomic status and health behaviors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Participants were from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child C

The Phenomenology and Dynamics of Wealth Shame: Between Moral Responsibility and Moral Masochism.

In an age of striking inequality in wealth, a related phenomenon, wealth shame, has developed. A multidisciplinary exploration of such shame examines its intrapsychic, intersubjective, transgenerational, and sociopolitical roots in the U.S., as well as its multiple functions: as an ethical response to economic disparity (moral responsibility), as a manifestation of a pervasive shame pattern (moral masochism), and as a defense against pleasure, feelings of superiority, and the fear of being envied. Several clinical vignettes illustrate these themes and are followed by reflections on their clini

The early lives of child prodigies.

Child prodigies raise interesting questions about the ways in which childhood experiences contribute to adult achievements. The likelihood of a highly able child being called a prodigy partly depends upon whether or not the individual's abilities are readily apparent to other people. By no means all outstanding adults were prodigies as children. Biographical accounts by prodigies themselves provide interesting insights. They show that most child prodigies devote a substantial amount of time to learning and studying, that some prodigies experience serious problems which appear to be related to

Living arrangements and women's health.

The recent changes in the traditional patterns of living arrangements in the U.S.A. raise interest in their consequences for the well being of the individuals involved. In this paper the physical health of women in different living arrangements was studied. It was suggested that living arrangements differ in the degree of adult support and the nurturant responsibilities that often accompany women's social support. Since previous research seems to indicate that social support promotes health and nurturant obligations constrains it, it was predicted that women whose living arrangements offer ste

Discourse processes underlying social competence in children with language learning disabilities.

Children with both a language impairment and a learning disability are at risk for poor social competence. Yet the processes that place these children at risk remain unclear. A developmental-organizational perspective was used to explore processes underlying risk for poor social competence among language learning disable children. To this end, the relative influences of language learning disability and social discourse skills on social competence were examined in 50 language learning disabled (LLD) and 50 control (non-LLD) children aged 8-12 years. Findings indicated that social discourse skil

Social support in Chinese patients with myasthenia gravis and analysis of related factors: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG), a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disorder, imposes long-term physical and psychological burdens on patients due to its chronicity, recurrence, and limited societal awareness. Social support plays a critical role in mitigating disease-related stressors, yet its status and determinants remain understudied in Chinese MG populations. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the current status of social support in patients with myasthenia gravis and analyze the related factors. METHODS: A total of 153 patients with myasthenia gravis were investigated using a general infor

Peer status in school and adult disease risk: a 30-year follow-up study of disease-specific morbidity in a Stockholm cohort.

BACKGROUND: Children have a social status position of their own, apart from that of the family, that may have an impact on short-term and long-term health. The aim of the present study was to analyse the associations between childhood social status in school (ie, peer status) and disease-specific morbidity in adulthood. METHODS: Data were derived from a longitudinal study using a 1953 cohort born in Stockholm, Sweden: The Stockholm Birth Cohort Study (1953-2003). Peer status was sociometrically assessed in sixth grade (1966). Hazard ratios for adult disease-specific morbidity based on informa

Interrelationship between Oral Health, Nutrition, and Frailty in Older Adults: A Basis for Moderating Mediation Model.

OBJECTIVE: Oral health and malnutrition are significant modifiable factors contributing to frailty in older adults. However, the intrinsic pathways through which they are associated with frailty, as well as the moderating mechanisms involving psychosocial factors, remain unclear. This study aims to explore the mediating role of nutritional status in the relationship between oral health and frailty among community-dwelling older adults from the Wenhui, Wenhe, and Shuangqiao Subdistricts and to examine the moderating effect of social isolation on the "nutrition-frailty" pathway. METHODS: Employ

Reversibility of social frailty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A longitudinal analysis of the multicenter observational (T-FLAG) study data.

BACKGROUND: Social frailty, characterized by reduced social participation and support, is associated with adverse outcomes. Although patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk of social frailty, longitudinal changes remain unclear. This study investigated the reversibility of social frailty and associated factors in RA. METHODS: This longitudinal analysis was based on a multicenter observational cohort. Social frailty was assessed using the Social Frailty Index. Among the 605 patients with RA, 216 who were socially frail at baseline were enrolled. Improvement was defined as

[Social inequalities in perinatal health].

Social insecurity is a known perinatal risk factor but beyond that, a social gradient in perinatal health is observable. This social gradient is particularly visible for the risk of neonatal mortality from congenital anomalies, premature delivery, and low birth weight. Analysis of mechanisms that would explain how the different dimensions of the social status of women interact with perinatal health indicators are not to this day fully understood. However, numbers of intermediate factors related to both the social status and perinatal risk have been identified. Among them, smoking, drug use, ex

Do childhood and adult socioeconomic circumstances influence health and physical function in middle-age?

This study examines the joint and separate contribution of social class in early and adult life to differences in health and physical function in middle-aged men. We use data from the Metropolit project which includes men born in 1953 in Copenhagen and a study of middle-aged Danish twins (MADT). In total 6292 Metropolit participants in a follow-up survey on health in 2004 were included in the study together with 2198 male twins of which 1294 were part of a male twin pair (N=647 pairs). Logistic regression was used to investigate the association between social class in early and adult life, res
