Evidence for distinct coastal and offshore communities of bottlenose dolphins in the north east Atlantic.

Bottlenose dolphin stock structure in the northeast Atlantic remains poorly understood. However, fine scale photo-id data have shown that populations can comprise multiple overlapping social communities. These social communities form structural elements of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) [corrected] populations, reflecting specific ecological and behavioural adaptations to local habitats. We investigated the social structure of bottlenose dolphins in the waters of northwest Ireland and present evidence for distinct inshore and offshore social communities. Individuals of the inshore com…

Social capital and common mental disorder: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically review all published quantitative studies examining the direct association between social capital and common mental disorders (CMD). Social capital has potential value for the promotion and prevention of CMD. The association between different types of social capital (individual cognitive and structural, and ecological cognitive and structural) and CMD must be explored to obtain conclusive evidence regarding the association, and to ascertain a direction of causality. DESIGN: 10 electronic databases were searched to find studies examining the associa

Social support and functioning in a patient with spinal cord injury: the role of social skills.

This study reports on a patient with spinal cord injury (SCI) in whom the interaction between social skills and social support seems to influence functioning. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was used as a reference framework. Qualitative (i.e. observation, structured, and open interviews with the patient and health professionals) and quantitative data (i.e. spinal cord independence measure, medical records) were collected. Content analysis of the interviews was carried out to identify aspects of social skills and social support. An ICF-based documen

The social phenotype of Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) offers an exciting model for social neuroscience because its genetic basis is well-defined, and the unique phenotype reflects dimensions of prosocial behaviors. WS is associated with a strong drive to approach strangers, a gregarious personality, heightened social engagement yet difficult peer interactions, high nonsocial anxiety, unusual bias toward positive affect, and diminished sensitivity to fear. New neurobiological evidence points toward alterations in structure, function, and connectivity of the social brain (amygdala, fusiform face area, orbital-frontal regions)

Social anxiety and the interpretation of positive social events.

We report four independent studies that examined the relationship between social interaction anxiety and the tendency to interpret positive social events in a threat-maintaining manner. Study 1 described the development of a scale that measures negative interpretations of positive social events, the interpretation of positive events scale (IPES). Study 2 cross-validated the structure of the IPES and established that social interaction anxiety explained significant variance in negative interpretations of positive social events beyond negative affect in general. Study 3 demonstrated that negativ

Absence of associations with prefrontal cortex and cerebellum may link to early language and social deficits in preschool children with ASD.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder, characterized by language and social deficits that begin to appear in the first years of life. Research in preschool children with ASD has consistently reported increased global brain volume and abnormal cortical patterns, and the brain structure abnormalities have also been found to be clinically and behaviorally relevant. However, little is known regarding the associations between brain structure abnormalities and early language and social deficits in preschool children with ASD. METHODS: In this study, we col

The Informal Social Support for Autonomy and Dependence in Pain Inventory Spanish version.

Social support plays a crucial role in the quality of life of people with chronic pain. The Informal Social Support for Autonomy and Dependence in Pain Inventory assesses two functions of received social support: the promotion of autonomy and the promotion of dependence. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to adapt this instrument for its use in the Spanish population. The sample comprised 256 individuals with chronic pain. Participants were recruited through two local associations of people with fibromyalgia, a physiotherapy unit and a hospital pain unit. The data were collected in Spai

Detecting social problems in cancer patients.

Diagnosis of and treatment for cancer may not only create physical and emotional difficulties for patients but may also have an impact on social aspects of patients' lives. Screening for social problems has not become part of routine oncology practice. This may be due to lack of a suitable questionnaire. This paper presents a psychometric analysis of the Problems Checklist with a view to assessing its usefulness as a screening tool for social problems in oncology. Evaluation was undertaken using data from an earlier study of 505 patients who completed the checklist. Frequency of endorsement, m

Optimizing a desirable fare structure for a bus-subway corridor.

This paper aims to optimize a desirable fare structure for the public transit service along a bus-subway corridor with the consideration of those factors related to equity in trip, including travel distance and comfort level. The travel distance factor is represented by the distance-based fare strategy, which is an existing differential strategy. The comfort level one is considered in the area-based fare strategy which is a new differential strategy defined in this paper. Both factors are referred to by the combined fare strategy which is composed of distance-based and area-based fare strategi

Breathing synchrony shapes respiratory disease risk in bottlenose dolphins.

Infectious diseases cause mass mortalities in wildlife populations globally, but the impact of host sociality on the spread of pathogens is often unknown. While host behaviors drive pathogen transmission, these behaviors vary individually which impacts both individual- and population-level disease outcomes. For example, delphinid species are regularly affected by serious respiratory diseases, but a lack of social behavior data means the structure of vulnerability in these ecosystem sentinels is poorly understood. To assess the role of variable social behavior on disease risk empirically, we co

The moralized coalitions model: How coalitional thinking and moralization shape social perception.

Social identities increasingly align along partisan lines in the United States, creating the potential for "moralized coalitions" that structure how people perceive and evaluate others. We propose the moralized coalitions model: When people mentally represent social groups as overlapping coalitions, these representations prompt category-based inferences and shape social evaluation, especially when group boundaries are moralized. Rather than representing groups primarily in terms of traits or beliefs, individuals may also construe social groups (e.g., political parties) as coalitions of overlap

Social anxiety questionnaire (SAQ): Development and preliminary validation.

BACKGROUND: The Social Anxiety Questionnaire (SAQ) was designed to assess five dimensions of social anxiety as posited by the Clark and Wells' (1995; Clark, 2001) cognitive model. METHODS: The development of the SAQ involved generation of an item pool, followed by a verification of content validity and the theorized factor structure (Study 1). The final version of the SAQ was then assessed for reliability, temporal stability (test re-test reliability), and construct, criterion-related, and contrasted-group validity (Study 2, 3, and 4). RESULTS: Following a systematic process, the results pro

Social Explanations of Lottery Play: New Evidence Based on National Survey Data.

This study examines the social contexts of gambling and analyzes social motivations for playing the lottery. We test three sociological approaches simultaneously: network effects, consumption theory, and strain theory. The data used (SOEP-IS, N = 5868 individuals) has several advantages beyond being a large-scale representative sample of the German population. With information on households, we can analyze social network effects while avoiding the problems of egocentric network data. Another benefit of the SOEP-IS is the panel structure. We use the panel structure to improve measurements of st

[Communicative and social-adaptive profile in children with autism spectrum disorder: a new approach based on the DSM-5 criteria].

INTRODUCTION: Following the adoption of the new international diagnosis classification from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been established as a dimensional category that includes other disorders that were previously considered as separate entities. Previous research has shown that some people with this disorder exhibit different communicative and linguistic profiles. Therefore, contradictory results could be found among people who receive the same diagnosis. AIM: To distinguish structural language aspects (expression and comprehension), inte

Brain and behaviour phenotyping of a mouse model of neurofibromatosis type-1: an MRI/DTI study on social cognition.

Neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1) is a common neurogenetic disorder and an important cause of intellectual disability. Brain-behaviour associations can be examined in vivo using morphometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to study brain structure. Here, we studied structural and behavioural phenotypes in heterozygous Nf1 mice (Nf1(+/-) ) using T2-weighted imaging MRI and DTI, with a focus on social recognition deficits. We found that Nf1(+/-) mice have larger volumes than wild-type (WT) mice in regions of interest involved in social cognition, the prefrontal c

Social ties and social identification: Influences on well-being in young adults.

Research highlights the positive impact of social connectedness on subjective well-being. In this paper, we test a model in which an identity-based mechanism links a structural form of connectedness (significant social ties) with two psychological well-being outcomes, life satisfaction and self-esteem. Using data from the LIVES Longitudinal Lausanne Youth Study (LIVES-LOLYS, N = 422), a longitudinal mediation path model tests direct and indirect effects, via the strength of social identification, of the number of significant social ties in two life domains (friends and family) on life satisfac

Mesoscale structures in signed networks.

Mesoscale structures in signed networks have been studied under the limiting assumption of the validity of social balance theory, which predicts positive connections within groups and negative connections between groups. Here, we propose and apply a methodology that overcomes this limitation and is able to find and characterize also the different possible unbalanced structures in signed networks. Applying our methodology to 24 empirical networks, from social-political, financial, and biological domains, we find that unbalanced mesoscale structures are prevalent in real-world networks, includin

The impact of environmental factors on public engagement on WeChat in China's national parks- a socio-cognitive analysis.

Based on social cognitive theory and engagement hierarchy structure, this study aims to investigate how environmental factors influence public interaction behavior on WeChat, the official social media platform used by China's national parks (NPs). Using monthly panel data from July 2018 to December 2023, this research employs advanced econometric models such as two-way fixed effects, Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV), and Difference Generalized Method of Moments (D-GMM) estimators to analyze the complex dynamics of public interaction and messaging. The results highlight the significant posit
