A male in early 70's with no known immunocompromising conditions developed progressive swelling, pain, and erythema of his left lower extremity (LLE) over 2 weeks following multiple abrasions to his LLE by a thorny bush while working in a brush field. He was found to have multiple purple bullae on the anterior surface of the distal half of the LLE, swelling, induration, and exquisite tenderness along with leukocytosis of 17,000 cells per milliliter, and elevated creatinine 1.75 mg/dl. and non loculated fluid collections under the cutaneous lesions on ultrasound. During excisional debridement,

Chromobacterium violaceum is a Gram-negative bacillus known to be a rare cause of human infection. The organism enters the body through skin injury and usually presents as a localized skin infection that can progress to multiple abscesses and multiorgan failure. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of skin and soft tissue infection caused by C. violaceum in the northeastern state of India, Mizoram. The organism was isolated from a pus sample obtained from a septic wound located on the foot and thigh of a pediatric patient. Though considered rare, this case report indicates that C.

BACKGROUND: Injection lipolysis is used for body and face contouring due to its minimal invasiveness and cost-effectiveness, but related complications such as nontuberculous mycobacterium infection significantly affect its clinical application.
AIMS: This study aimed to review the literature on NTM infection after injection lipolysis.
METHODS: We conducted a literature review of scientific journals published in Medline and PubMed up to September 2022 on patients with NTM skin and soft tissue infections. We used the keywords: nontuberculous mycobacterium, infection, injection lipolysis, and l

Emphysematous osteomyelitis (EO) is a rare condition identified through the presence of intraosseous gas. It is frequently fatal even with prompt recognition and management. We report a case of EO presenting with a necrotizing soft tissue infection of the thigh in the setting of prior pelvic radiation. The purpose of this study was to highlight the unusual association between EO and necrotizing soft tissue infection.

Hansen's disease is a well-described, largely historic infection that is caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Lucio's phenomenon is an aggressive, rare form of untreated lepromatous leprosy characterized by diffuse cutaneous lesions and systemic symptoms. To date, cases of necrotizing soft tissue infection in the setting of leprosy have rarely been reported in the literature. We present the case of a 51-year-old man with no known past medical history who presented for the evaluation of acute-on-chronic left upper extremity ulceration, soft tissue swelling, and pain. The patient was diagnosed with n

RATIONALE: Cryptococcal infection has been documented in immunocompromised patients. AIDS and renal transplant recipients account for majority of the cases. Most cases present with central nervous system or disseminated disease, with only few presenting soft tissue, bone, and joint manifestations.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of soft tissue mass in a 66-year-old female renal transplant recipient and that of arthritis in a 64-year-old immunocompetent man who presented pseudogout arthropathy. Chest radiographies of both cases were negative. Biopsy revealed cryptococcal organisms. Blood c

Background: Early diagnosis and prompt debridement of necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) improves the outcome. We sought to determine whether failure to admit NSTI patients to acute care surgery (ACS) departments delays treatment and increases the mortality rate. Methods: Patients with NSTI were identified using the 2007-2018 institutional emergency surgery database at a tertiary care hospital. The diagnosis was confirmed by the operative/pathology reports. Patients who developed NSTI during hospitalization or underwent initial debridement at an outside hospital were excluded. Patients a

PURPOSE: Ultrasound (US) aids clinical management of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) by differentiating non-purulent cellulitis from abscess. However, purulent SSTI may be present without abscess. Guidelines recommend incision and drainage (I & D) for purulent SSTI, but US descriptions of purulent SSTI without abscess are lacking.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed pediatric emergency department patients with US of the buttock read as negative for abscess. We identified US features of SSTI with adequate interobserver agreement (kappa > 0.45). Six independent observers then ranked pres

UNLABELLED: Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are associated with a high mortality and require prompt recognition and treatment, consisting of aggressive surgical debridement and critical care support. Diagnosis is a key step, which is generally made in the operating room (OR), but the decision to debride requires guidance. This is frequently made on clinical grounds, but NSTI can be occult in presentation and several other infective processes can mimic NSTI. It is unknown whether the various scoring systems described in the literature can enable clinicians to reliably diagnose NSTI i

The association of the spread of community infections with poverty and overcrowding is well known. In our hospital, located in José C. Paz, we assist sporadic cases of post-cesarean infections caused by community acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CaMRSA). In a prospective study of families treated at our hospital, we investigated the relationship between a history of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) and extreme overcrowding defined as households with unsatisfied basic needs type 3 (NBI 3). A total of 264 households were included in the study; 109 (41.3%) had a history

BACKGROUND: Necrotising soft tissue infection (NSTI) is an infection of the subcutaneous tissues and often follows a fulminant course if not recognised in time.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 78-year-old man was brought to our emergency department in septic shock. Physical examination revealed an erythematous and painful swelling of the right eyelids and to a lesser extent of the right hand. The infection progressed at both sites, and suspicion of NSTI arose. An emergency surgical debridement was performed. Pathological examination of the excised tissue confirmed the presence of a necrotising infection

Skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients and a major therapeutic challenge for clinicians. Although uncomplicated SSTIs are managed successfully on an outpatient basis, more serious infections extending to the subcutaneous tissue, fascia, or muscle require complex management. Early diagnosis, selection of appropriate antimicrobials, and timely surgical intervention are key to successful treatment. Surgical-site infections, an important category of SSTI, occur in approximately half a million patients in North America a

Pseudomonas putida is an uncommon cause of skin and soft tissue infections. It is often associated with trauma or immunocompromised state. We present the first lethal case of bacteremia due to skin and soft tissue infections, which had malnutrition, immobility, and peripheral vascular disease as risk factors.

Burkholderia cepacia belongs to a family of Burkholderia species previously described as Pseudomonas cepacia, especially in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis. There are also many studies about this agent in the last decade due to their life-threatening infections and ability to invade mucosal and cellular surfaces. Here, we report a case of soft tissue infection caused by B. cepacia in a child with an underlying condition of polyarteritis nodosa. Her complaints started at two months of age and she was on cyclosporine therapy. She was treated several times because of soft tissue infection

We report a case of posttraumatic skin and soft tissue infection in a patient who sustained laceration after being hit by a water tanker. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from pus and was identified to the species level by Vitek 2 and a battery of biochemical tests. The patient responded to thorough drainage, debridement of wound and 2 weeks of intravenous antibiotics. The patient was taken up for split skin grafting of the raw area. She was discharged with satisfactory graft uptake after 1 week without any further antibiotics advice. Follow-up after 3 weeks was satisfactory with healthy cove

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is usually associated with nosocomial pneumonia or bacteremia. Reports of A. baumannii skin and soft-tissue infection (SSTI) are uncommon.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 57 inpatients admitted to a naval hospital ship and identified 8 patients with A. baumannii-associated SSTI. Demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between these patients and 49 patients with A. baumannii infections that were not SSTIs. We also reviewed 18 cases of A. baumannii-associated SSTI from the literature.
RESULTS: Our 8 cases of A. baumannii-associ

This review presents the aerobic and anaerobic microbiological aspects and management of cutaneous and soft tissue abscesses, paronychia, anorectal, pilonidal, and perirectal abscesses, infected epidermal cysts, hidradenitis suppurativa, and pustular acne lesions. These infections often occur in different body sites or in areas that have been compromised or injured by foreign body, trauma, ischemia, malignancy or surgery. In addition to group A beta-hemolytic streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus, the indigenous aerobic and anaerobic cutaneous and mucous membranes local microflora usually is
