Influence of biomass ashes on the structural evolution and oxygen-donating capacity of red mud during chemical looping gasification.

To efficiently convert the biomass wastes, chemical looping gasification has been proposed as a highly effective method to produce hydrogen-rich syngas. The lattice oxygens in oxygen carriers can supplant molecular oxygens, thereby improving syngas quality. However, the complex interactions between oxygen carrier and biomass ash are inevitable, obviously affecting reactivity of oxygen carrier. In this work, red mud, a solid waste rich in Fe2O3, was selected as oxygen carrier and biomass feedstocks with distinct differences in ash composition and content were used. The findings demonstrate a ro…

Investigation of interaction mechanisms during co-combustion of sewage sludge and coal slime: Combustion characteristics and NO/SO2 emission behavior.

Co-combustion of sewage sludge (SS) and coal slime (CS) is a promising method to achieve resource utilization of both solid wastes. However, the emission characteristics of NO/SO2 and the interaction mechanisms between SS and CS are unclear. In this paper, the co-combustion characteristics and NO/SO2 emission behavior of SS and CS were investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a tube furnace combustion system, and the interactions between SS and CS were explored. The results revealed the presence of remarkable interactions between SS and CS during the co-combustion. For the combustio…

Effect of calcium oxide on chromium solidification during the melting of hazardous waste incineration fly ash.

Thermal treatment technology considerably affects the harmlessness of fly ash (FA), but highly toxic heavy metals, such as Cr, attract considerable attention. In this study, we investigated the influence of CaO dosage at 600°C-1200 °C on the curing effect of Cr during FA thermal treatment based on the combination effect of CaO. Static, dynamic, and continuous sequential leachings were performed for the sintered products. Results showed that the leaching concentration of Cr decreased by approximately 91% when CaO dosage was 8.57%, and the difference in the residual state was the main reason for

Red mud-based catalysts for the catalytic removal of typical air pollutants: A review.

Red mud, as a solid waste produced during the alumina production, can cause severe eco-environmental pollution and health risks to human. Therefore, the resourcing of this type of solid waste is an effective way for the sustainable development. This paper reviews the recent progress on red mud-based catalysts for the removal of typical air pollutants, such as the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by NH3 (NH3-SCR) and the catalytic oxidation of CO and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The factors influencing the catalytic performance and the structure-activity relationship have been…

Recycling and regenerating of spent ternary cathode in lithium-ion battery via the corn straw-induced thermal reduction.

To address the problems in the conventional carbothermal-reduction methods for recovery of the spent ternary cathodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), particularly the low-utilization and high-value reductants, this study introduces an optimized thermal-reduction technique utilizing agricultural waste of corn straw as a reductant. The pyrolysis of corn straw generates highly reductive species of C, H2, CH4, and CO, which converts the reaction mechanism from a conventional solid-solid reaction to a combined solid-solid/solid-gas reactions. This significantly enhances the reduction efficiency of

Examining a punishment-related brain circuit with miniature fluorescence microscopes and deep learning.

We conducted a series of 24-hour waste audits in a 20-bed pod of a Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) during the COVID-19 pandemic to 1) determine the unit's waste generation practices, 2) calculate associated downstream greenhouse gas emissions, and 3) identify opportunities to reduce landfill waste and emissions. We collected and weighed municipal solid waste, regulated medical waste, and mechanical recycling. We then compared the current, "as-is" practices to an ideal, "should-be" model which adds the alternative waste and reprocessing streams of industrial composting, advanced r…

Improper office disposal of needles and other sharps: an occupational hazard outside of health care institutions.

An employee of a private disposal company suffered a finger needlestick injury while collecting waste at curbside from a building containing medical offices. Subsequent inspection of the contents of the garbage bags revealed the presence of used syringes and unsheathed needles. The Ministry of the Environment has developed a regulation and guidelines for the handling and disposal of biomedical waste including needles and other sharps. These specify that approved carriers and receivers are required for disposal; properly decontaminated waste is considered non-hazardous solid waste and can go to…

Inhibition of jarosite heterogeneous crystallization on anglesite via in-situ formation of competitive substrate.

Heterogeneous crystallization is a common occurrence during the formation of solid wastes. It leads to the encapsulation of valuable/hazardous metals within the primary phase, presenting significant challenges for waste treatment and metal recovery. Herein, we proposed a novel method involving the in-situ formation of a competitive substrate during the precipitation of jarosite waste, which is an essential process for removing iron in zinc hydrometallurgy. We observed that the in-situ-formed competitive substrate effectively inhibits the heterogeneous crystallization of jarosite on the surface…

Effects of specimen size and mix ratio on the nickel migration behavior of landfill waste mixed mortar.

Landfill solid waste management system poses the potential source of silent wide-spread heavy metals like nickel poisoning in the entire ecosystem of nearby environment. Nickel containing demolish solid wastes are disposed at landfill zones to a great extent from where nickel migrate into the food chain through the surface water body as well as groundwater. Consequently, nickel exposure may cause different environmental problems. From this sense, it may be an attractive proposal to recycle the waste as a sustainable product. Herein is presented a long-term feasibility study on potential leachi…

Sponges sneeze mucus to shed particulate waste from their seawater inlet pores.

Sponges, among the oldest extant multicellular organisms on Earth,1 play a key role in the cycling of nutrients in many aquatic ecosystems.2-5 They need to employ strategies to prevent clogging of their internal filter system by solid wastes,6-8 but self-cleaning mechanisms are largely unknown. It is commonly assumed that sponges remove solid waste with the outflowing water through distinct outflow openings (oscula).3,9 Here, we present time-lapse video footage and analyses of sponge waste revealing a completely different mechanism of particle removal in the Caribbean tube sponge Aplysina arch…

Evaluating combustion kinetics and quantifying fuel-N conversion tendency of shoe manufacturing waste.

Combustion is an effective and cost-efficient thermochemical conversion method for solid waste, showing promise for the resource utilization of shoe manufacturing waste (SMW). However, SMW is generally composed of different components, which can lead to unstable combustion and excessive pollutant emissions, especially NOx. To date, combustion characteristics, reaction mechanism and fuel nitrogen (fuel-N) conversion of different SMW components remain unclear. In this work, the combustion behavior of typical SMW components combustion was investigated using Thermogravimetric coupled with Fourier …

Leather waste--potential threat to human health, and a new technology of its treatment.

In this paper, the authors deal with the problem of processing various types of waste generated by leather industry, with special emphasis to chrome-tanned waste. The agent that makes this waste potentially hazardous is hexavalent chromium. Its compounds can have negative effects on human health and some CrVI salts are considered carcinogens. The authors present the risks of spontaneous oxidization of CrIII to CrVI in the open-air dumps as well as the possible risks of wearing bad quality shoes, in which the chromium content is not controlled. There are several ways of handling primary leather

Response of leaf and fine roots proteomes of Salix viminalis L. to growth on Cr-rich tannery waste.

The tannery industry is a major source of anthropogenic chromium (Cr) contamination due to the large amounts of solid waste produced and its problematic management. The unique composition of tannery waste, usually high concentrations of Cr and other metals as well as organic matter and nutrients, makes it a great risk for soil and water environment but also a possible effective fertilizer for non-food plants that can tolerate metals. The goal of this study was to understand the adaptation mechanism of Salix viminalis to growth on Cr-rich tannery waste from an active landfill. We used a proteom…
