It has long been theorized that carbon allocation, in addition to the carbon source and to kinetic isotopic effects associated with a particular lipid biosynthetic pathway, plays an important role in shaping the carbon isotopic composition ((13)C/(12)C) of lipids (Park and Epstein, 1961). If the latter two factors are properly constrained, valuable information about carbon allocation during lipid biosynthesis can be obtained from carbon isotope measurements. Published work of Chikaraishi et al. (2004) showed that leaf lipids isotopic shifts from bulk leaf tissue Δδ(13)C(bk-lp) (defined as δ(13

Anaerobic fermentation with microbial communities is an emerging platform for converting lignocellulosic biomass to biofuels and bioproducts. The process relies on diverse anaerobic microbes that interact to deconstruct and convert lignocellulosic biomass into a range of products, such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), through arresting methanogenesis during fermentation. However, defining the distinct functional roles played by various fungi and bacteria during anaerobic biodegradation remains poorly understood. Here, we performed parallel enrichment experiments from cow feces, goat feces, and

S-(-)-Spirobrassinin is a secondary metabolite derived from broccoli, exhibiting significant weed-suppressive activity and serving as a promising lead compound for botanical herbicide development. However, its practical application is constrained by unanswered questions regarding crop selectivity, environmental fate, and particularly its rapid soil degradation. To address these gaps, this study employed a combination of bioassays, soil analytics, and molecular dynamics simulations to comprehensively evaluate its herbicide potential and explore a biochar-based carrier strategy for sustained rel

In this paper, we present an archaeobotanical study from Old Dongola, northern Sudan, examining agricultural dynamics and subsistence strategies from the Late Christian to the Islamic period. Old Dongola, established in the 5th century, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Makuria, one of the three medieval Nubian kingdoms. Following the collapse of Makuria in the 14th century, the city underwent significant cultural and social transformations, marked by the migration of Arab tribes and the rise of new power structures. From the 14th to the 18th century, Old Dongola served as the seat of a

Laccases highlight for xenobiotic bioremediation, as well as application in the fine chemical, textile, biofuel and food industries. In a previous work, we described the preliminary characterization of laccase LacMeta, a promising enzyme for the bioremediation of dyes, able to decolorization malachite green (MG), trypan blue, methylene blue. Here we demonstrate that LacMeta is indeed suitable for the complete degradation and detoxification of MG dye, not just for its discoloration, since some works show false positives due to the formation of colorless intermediates such as leucomalachite. Pratylenchus smoliki is a new species of root-lesion nematode described from corn-soybean production fields in the Central Great Plains of North America. It is characterized by populations with relatively abundant males, two lip annuli, females with a round functional spermatheca and a conoid to subcylindrical tail with a non-crenate, smooth terminus. In host preference tests, corn and wheat produce the largest nematode populations, whereas sorghum and soybeans produce less than 20% the numbers observed on corn. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the en face patterns compare to those se

Kafirin (KAF), the prolamine protein from sorghum grain, is a promising resource for fabricating renewable and biodegradable materials. However, research efforts in fulfilling its potentials are still lacking. In this work, electrospun kafirin fibers from acetic acid/dichloromethane solutions are reported for the first time. Biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) was blended with kafirin to obtain hybrid KAF/PCL fiber mats with desirable physical properties. Hydrogen bonding between the N-H group of kafirin and the C═O group of PCL was detected in each blended formulation. Our small-angle X-ray

BACKGROUND: Before the 1930s, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oesophagus was almost unknown among black South Africans. From the 1930s the annual frequency rose. A dietary cause was sought, the staple diet of black people having changed from sorghum to maize (corn), with traditional beer being brewed from maize. Carcinogenic N-nitrosamines in traditional beer were suggested as a cause of SCC of the oesophagus, with Fusarium moniliforme, a corn saprophyte, thought to play a role.
OBJECTIVES: To confirm the presence of N-nitrosamines in traditional beer and demonstrate a mechanism for the

The generalist moth, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) consists of two genetic subgroups (host strains) that differ in their distribution among host plant species. The corn strain prefers crop plants such as corn, sorghum, and cotton, while the rice strain is found in small grasses such as Cynodon spp. and rice. Little is known about the physiological factors that drive this host preference. Here, we report a feeding study with natural host plants and an artificial diet containing cyanide. We found that corn, two Cynodon spp. (bermudagrass C. dactylon (L.) Persoon, 'NuMex Sahara', and stargr

Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), was first discovered damaging seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz) turfgrass in November 2003 at Belle Glade, FL. Inquiries to several golf courses with seashore paspalum turf across southern Florida indicated infestation was wide spread by April 2004. Damage symptoms progress from water soaked lesions surrounding feeding sites within 24 h to chlorosis and necrosis of leaf tips within 96 h. Problems caused by greenbug feeding were initially misdiagnosed as fertilizer, disease, other insects, or water management problems b

The numerous risks associated with the toxicity of conventional quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) to various groups of living organisms have prompted the search for new, safer biologically active compounds synthesized in a sustainable manner from renewable raw materials. Here, we describe new QASs of natural origin containing quinine-based cation and anions derived from proteinogenic amino acids - l-asparagine and l-alanine. The quinine-derived QASs were thoroughly characterized in terms of correctness of chemical structure, physicochemical properties, and biological activity. It was discovered

The shikimate pathway is a crucial metabolic route for the biosynthesis of numerous valuable chemicals. In this study, we engineered the shikimate pathway in plants via expression of microbial enzymes to produce the two important antioxidants gallate and arbutin. The engineered pathways utilize the aromatics protocatechuate and 4-hydroxybenzoate as metabolic intermediates. Through transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves, we first identified biosynthetic routes for the production of gallate from either chorismate or 3-dehydroshikimate. Gallate production was then achieved in Arabid

Cyanide is the most fatal anion which is also an inevitable component present in edible parts such as leaves and kernels of many plants, therefore the detection and quantification of cyanide in food is vital. Herein, we have developed a turn off fluorescent sensor using a novel fluorescent probe with carbon dots and rutin combination system. Blue emission carbon dots have been derived from lignin rich corn silk through a single step hydrothermal synthesis. The synthesized carbon dots displayed maximum fluorescence emission at 400 nm upon excitation at 320 nm. The developed sensor exhibits good

The increasing popularity of low- and no-gluten flours as wheat flour alternatives has driven the need to understand risks of insect pest infestation in these products. Previous research using no-choice bioassays found that the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst can oviposit and develop on a range of alternative flours; here we test T. castaneum preference by assessing attraction in a wind tunnel assay and oviposition preference in both small- and large-scale choice assays between alternative and wheat flour. Some flours such as buckwheat, teff, millet, rice, and rye elicit similar r

Trichoderma species are filamentous fungi that support plant health and confer improved growth, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. The objective of this study is to describe the physiological characteristics of the abundance and structure of Trichoderma model strains from arid zones and evaluate and describe their possible adaptation and modulation in alkaline pH. The presence of biotic factors such as phytopathogens forces farmers to take more actions such as using pesticides. In addition, factors such as the lack of water worldwide lead to losses in agricultural production. Th

Among various abiotic stresses, water deficit hit the first in the list followed by heavy metal stresses as a serious environmental growth-limiting factor that restricts the global crop yield. Molecular approaches will help us to trace key regulators which are involved in stress-related phenomenon to enhance crop productivity. The present study functionally characterized one of the key regulators, OsMYB-R1 in Arabidopsis. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that OsMYB-R1 had a close relationship with Sorghum bicolour and Zea mays. Ectopic expression of OsMYB-R1 in Arabidopsis resulted in improved

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important opportunistic pathogen in humans and animals. Recently, K. pneumoniae KpC4 was identified as a causative agent of bacterial top rot in maize, which has been observed in many areas of Yunnan province, China. KpC4 is potentially dangerous to humans and livestock due to its cross-kingdom infection ability. Our study revealed the disease cycle of maize bacterial top rot caused by KpC4 and the ecological adaptability and host range of KpC4. We found same pathogenicity in maize between KpC4, the environmental strains E1, E4 (K1 serotype), E5, and the clinical st
