[The variability of the basic speech tone frequency in the patients presenting with functional voice disorders].

The objective of this study was to elucidate changes in tone sigma (σ) before and after the treatment of the patients with mutational falsetto (n=10) and functional dysphonia (n=10). The control group was comprised of 30 healthy subjects. A personal computer was used to determine the values of SF0 (the mean frequency of the basic speech tone) and sigma (the standard deviation of the frequency values comprising SF0). It was shown that the treatment of the patients presenting with mutational falsetto (MF) and functional dysphonia (FD) resulted in identical quantitative changes of SF0, namely its

Investigation into the effectiveness of electropalatography in treating persisting speech sound disorders in adolescents with co-occurring developmental language disorder.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of electropalatography (EPG) intervention in targeting specific phonemes/words in seven adolescents aged 14:10-18:06 with co-occurring speech sound and language disorders. Progress on individualised targets versus controls was evaluated following intervention undertaken as part of the participants' usual speech and language therapy provision. As a group, the participants showed significantly greater progress on their targets than controls, indicating that the EPG intervention was effective. However, performance varied between participants, targets a

Children with comorbid speech sound disorder and specific language impairment are at increased risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

This study focuses on the comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and speech sound disorder (SSD). SSD is a developmental disorder characterized by speech production errors that impact intelligibility. Previous research addressing this comorbidity has typically used heterogeneous groups of speech-language disordered children. This study employed more precise speech-language diagnostic criteria and examined ADHD symptomatology in 108 SSD children between the ages of 4 and 7 years old with specific language impairment (SLI) (n = 23, 14 males, 9 females) and w

Digital App for Speech and Health Monitoring Study (DASH): protocol for a prospective longitudinal case-control observational study for developing speech datasets in neurodegenerative disorders and dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) represent an unprecedented public health burden. These disorders are clinically heterogeneous and therapeutically challenging, but advances in discovery science and trial methodology offer hope for translation to new treatments. Against this background, there is an urgent unmet need for biomarkers to aid with early and accurate diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring throughout the care pathway and in clinical trials.Investigations routinely used in clinical care and trials are often invasive, expensive, time-consuming, subjective and ordinal. Music, occupational, physical, and speech therapy interventions for patients in disorders of consciousness: An umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Current clinical guidelines recommend that a multidisciplinary team inclusive of allied healthcare practitioners deliver assessment and intervention for disorders of consciousness. Allied health professionals include music, occupational, physical, and speech therapists. These allied health clinicians are challenged to select interventions due to a lack of evidence-based recommendations regarding rehabilitation interventions that support recovery of consciousness. This umbrella review synthesizes available systematic reviews (SRs) that describe occupational, speech and language, phy

Privacy-Preserving Social Ambiance Measure From Free-Living Speech Associates With Chronic Depressive and Psychotic Disorders.

A social interaction consists of contributions by the individual, the environment and the interaction between the two. Ideally, to enable effective assessment and interventions for social isolation, an issue inherent to depressive and psychotic illnesses, the isolation must be identified in real-time and at an individual level. However, research addressing sociability deficits is largely focused on determining loneliness, rather than isolation, and lacks focus on the richness of the social environment the individual revolves in. In this paper, We describe the development of an automated, objec

Management of functional communication, swallowing, cough and related disorders: consensus recommendations for speech and language therapy.

Communication problems (eg, dysphonia, dysfluency and language and articulation disorders), swallowing disorders (dysphagia and globus), cough and upper airway symptoms, resulting from functional neurological disorder (FND), are commonly encountered by speech and language professionals. However, there are few descriptions in the literature of the most effective practical management approaches. This consensus document aims to provide recommendations for assessment and intervention that are relevant to both adults and young people. An international panel of speech and language professionals with

Atypical longitudinal development of speech-evoked auditory brainstem response in preschool children with autism spectrum disorders.

Language impairment is common in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Previous research has shown that this disability may be, in part, due to atypical auditory processing of speech stimuli. However, how speech sounds are processed in children with ASD remains largely unknown. The present study assessed the developmental pattern of auditory information processing at the level of the brainstem in preschool children with ASD using speech-evoked auditory brainstem response (speech-ABR). Children with ASD (N = 15) and of typical developing (TD) (N = 20), both of preschool age, were enro

Brain basis of childhood speech and language disorders: are we closer to clinically meaningful MRI markers?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Developmental speech and language disorders are common, seen in one in 20 preschool children, in the absence of frank neurological deficits or intellectual impairment. They are a key reason parents seek help from paediatricians. Complex neurogenetic and environmental contributions underpin the disorders, yet few specific causes are known. With the advent of quantitative brain imaging, a growing number of studies have investigated neural contributions. Here, we discuss current MRI approaches and recent findings (January 2014-June 2016) in the field. RECENT FINDINGS: Five rel

The use of nonspeech oral motor treatments for developmental speech sound production disorders: interventions and interactions.

PURPOSE: The use of nonspeech oral motor treatments (NSOMTs) in the management of pediatric speech sound production disorders is controversial. This article serves as a prologue to a clinical forum that examines this topic in depth. METHOD: Theoretical, historical, and ethical issues are reviewed to create a series of clinical questions that should be considered before one incorporates new methods into clinical practice. CONCLUSION: Speech production disorders are complex and multifaceted. Speech-language pathologists are encouraged to advocate on behalf of clients by adopting the highest st

Automated Assessment of Hypernasality in Motor Speech Disorders Using Nasal Cognate Distinctiveness and Nasal Posterior Probability.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether two automated measures of nasality, Nasal Cognate Distinctiveness (NCD) and nasal posterior probability (NPP), provide clinically meaningful markers of hypernasality in speakers with motor speech disorders (MSDs) and to determine whether hypernasality-related information extends beyond stop consonants, which are typically targeted in cognate-based approaches. METHOD: Sentence-level speech recordings were obtained from 561 patients, including 374 neurologically typical controls and 187 individuals with MSDs. NCD was computed for voiceless stops (/p/, /t/, /k/) usin…
