Validity and Reliability of Speech Data in the Norwegian Registry of Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) treatment in Norway is centralized and multidisciplinary, with long-term follow-up from birth to adulthood. The Norwegian Registry of Cleft Lip and Palate was established to ensure high-quality care and enable systematic data collection. Speech data are a key component, assessed by speech-language therapists (SLTs) using standardized tools. Ensuring the validity and reliability of these data is essential for clinical decision-making and quality assurance. AIM: The study aimed to (1) assess the validity of speech data obtained from routine assessments rec

Functional results of microvascular reconstruction after hemiglossectomy: free anterolateral thigh flap versus free forearm flap.

The aim of the present study is to assess functional outcomes after hemiglossectomy and microvascular reconstruction. Twenty-six patients underwent primary tongue microvascular reconstruction after hemiglossectomy. Twelve patients were reconstructed using a free radial forearm flap and 14 with an anterolateral thigh flap. Speech intelligibility, swallowing capacity and quality of life scores were assessed. Factors such as tumour extension, surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy appeared to be fundamental to predict post-treatment functional outcomes. The data obtained in the present stud

Speech production in young children with tongue-tie.

INTRODUCTION: Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, occurs in 4-10% of the population. Treatment of tongue-tie has increased by 420% in Australia between 2006 and 2016 and 866% in the United States between 1997 and 2012. Despite limited evidence, it has been suggested that tongue-tie can result in speech sound disorder (SSD). This study aimed to investigate tongue mobility and speech production outcomes in children with and without tongue-tie diagnoses. METHOD: Fifty-nine children aged 2; 1 to 4; 11 years were recruited and formed three groups: treated tongue-tie (TTT), untreated tongue-tie (UTT) and

Contributions of Age-Related and Audibility-Related Deficits to Aided Consonant Identification in Presbycusis: A Causal-Inference Analysis.

The decline of speech intelligibility in presbycusis can be regarded as resulting from the combined contribution of two main groups of factors: (1) audibility-related factors and (2) age-related factors. In particular, there is now an abundant scientific literature on the crucial role of suprathreshold auditory abilities and cognitive functions, which have been found to decline with age even in the absence of audiometric hearing loss. However, researchers investigating the direct effect of aging in presbycusis have to deal with the methodological issue that age and peripheral hearing loss cova

[Speech audiometry in advanced age - differentiating between the elements of primary and secondary presbyacusis (author's transl)].

Tone threshold, speech intelligibility by the Freiburg test with loss of hearing for speech, discrimination loss and total word intelligibility, dichotic discrimination and binaural summation ability were all measured in 167 test subjects aged between 65 and 91 years. The statistical processing of the numerous parameters shows that all parameters manifest a worsening of hearing with age, the individual values revealing a considerable scatter. Tone loss proved to be largely cochlear in nature. All the speech audiometric parameters correlated highly significantly (binaural summation significantl

Endoscopic evaluation of velopharyngeal function in cleft lip palate patients - A correlation with speech analysis.

BACKGROUND: Speech abnormalities due to velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) significantly affect communication skills, self-esteem, and scholastic performance. It leads to a poor social, emotional, educational, and behavioral development and a poor quality of life overall in cleft lip palate (CLP) patients. Its early diagnosis and severity assessment using video-nasoendoscopy and speech assessment can significantly contribute to management. The present study evaluated VPI in CLP patients using both tools. METHODS: A total of 48 patients with repaired cleft palate were subjected to speech and v

Combined repair of lip and palate with pharyngoplasty for late presenting clefts.

A combined lip and palatal repair with an Orticochea sphincter repair was done in nine patients presenting to our cleft team in Nepal and Tibet for the first time after the age of 8 years. This retrospective study assessed the procedure using the outcome measurements of operative morbidity and postoperative nasality and intelligibility of speech. The total median postoperative hospital stay was 2 days (range 1-4). There were no intraoperative or in-hospital complications. One patient developed a small fistula. Speech results were available in only four of the patients. Nasality was mild in two

Soft palate reconstruction with free jejunum flap: Impact on the velopharyngeal insufficiency.

If inadequately reconstructed, large resections of the soft palate inevitably cause velopharyngeal insufficiency, nasal regurgitation and reduce speech intelligibility. A series of 12 free Jejunal flaps are presented, with 28.5 months median follow up (IQR 10.5), with evidence that the flaps provided appropriate secretions and good functionality for speech and resumption of oral intake. A retrospective case series was performed, from 2004 to 2020, including patients diagnosed with palate locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma and reconstructed with free jejunum flap. Twelve patients were inc

Prospective speech outcome study in patients with soft palate reconstruction in tonsillar cancer.

For advanced stage tonsil cancer, extensive resection of the soft palate is unavoidable. The purpose of this study is to report on the speech outcome according to the various types of defects and reconstruction techniques. This prospective study was performed on 53 patients of tonsil cancer. The postoperative speech function was evaluated for three factors: nasalance, speech intelligibility, and velopharyngeal insufficiency. Four reconstruction methods used for the soft palate defect: local flap, patch method, Gehanno method, and Denude method. Univariate analysis showed that the Denuded recon

OPRA-RS: A Hearing-Aid Fitting Method Based on Automatic Speech Recognition and Random Search.

Hearing-aid (HA) prescription rules (such as NAL-NL2, DSL-v5, and CAM2) are used by HA audiologists to define initial HA settings (e.g., insertion gains, IGs) for patients. This initial fitting is later individually adjusted for each patient to improve clinical outcomes in terms of speech intelligibility and listening comfort. During this fine-tuning stage, speech-intelligibility tests are often carried out with the patient to assess the benefits associated with different HA settings. As these tests tend to be time-consuming and performance on them depends on the patient's level of fatigue and
