OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of spleen lymphocytes on the splenomegaly by hepatocellular carcinoma-bearing mouse model.
METHODS: Cell counts, cell cycle distribution, the percentage of lymphocytes subsets and the levels of IL-2 were measured, and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) was used to investigate the relationship between spleen lymphocytes and splenomegaly in hepatocellular carcinoma-bearing mice.

We report a case of scarlet fever associated with hepatitis, gallbladder hydrops, splenomegaly, and ascites in a 15-year-old girl. The girl presented with fever and skin rash. Leukocyte, liver enzyme, and serum C-reactive protein concentrations were elevated. Ultrasonography revealed marked gallbladder wall thickening, diffuse liver parenchymal disease with moderate splenomegaly, and moderate ascites throughout the abdominal and pelvic cavities. Blood cultures for group A β-hemolytic streptococci were negative. Complete recovery was facilitated with antibiotic treatment.

HYPOTHESIS: Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) is a safe therapeutic approach to remove megaspleens of any size. Conventional laparoscopic splenectomy for splenomegaly is difficult because of limited exposure and complex vascular control, with increased risk of intraoperative bleeding and conversion to open surgery. HALS can overcome some of these limitations, reducing the risk of conversion to open surgery and resulting in a postoperative course similar to that of conventional laparoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic splenectomy used for massive splenomegaly is still controversial. The purpose of our current study was to identify the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic splenectomy for massive splenomegaly.

The spectrum of clinical presentation of haematological disease is wide. We highlight two features of this principle: a rare cause of a 'haematological' presentation and a possible haematological cause of a disease not normally considered as such. A case of systemic pyoderma gangrenosum presented with splenomegaly in the absence of a rash. A clonal gamma- and beta-T-cell receptor rearrangement was demonstrated. Such clones may be a general phenomenon involved in the pathogenesis of this condition.

A recent Ethiopian immigrant to Israel presented with pneumococcal sepsis, massive splenomegaly and lymph-adenopathy. Investigations revealed many features of both hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) and hyperreactive malarious splenomegaly (HMS). Proguanil therapy for HMS was followed by rapid, marked decrease in spleen size, disappearance of the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive cells characteristic of HCL, and increasing eosinophilia, but unchanged lymphadenopathy.

Results of subacute embolization of the splenic artery with a metallic spiral obtained in 22 patients with cirrhosis of the liver with splenomegaly were studied at the stage of sub- and decompensation of the portal blood circulation. During a study in Kenya of the relationships between Schistosoma haematobium infection and anemia and growth, evidence was found to suggest that this infection was associated with splenomegaly in children, and that both splenomegaly and hepatomegaly regressed in children treated for urinary schistosomiasis, compared with a placebo group. These results imply that S. haematobium is partially responsible for the splenomegaly and hepatomegaly found in this malarious area, and that treatment for S. haematobium may cause a significant regression of splenomegaly and hepatomegaly in children.
