Ocular rhinosporidiosis: a case report from Delhi.

Rhinosporidiosis caused by Rhinosporidium seeberii, a protistal microorganism, is endemic in several parts of India. Infection involves mucous membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses and usually manifests as vascular friable polyps. A few cases of rhinosporidoisis have been reported from Delhi, in patients who were migrants from other states. The present case constitutes the first report of rhinosporidiosis in a Delhi resident; the lesion occurred as polypoidal mass of the palpebral conjunctiva.

Live-cell imaging reveals the dynamics of two sperm cells during double fertilization in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Flowering plants have evolved a unique reproductive process called double fertilization, whereby two dimorphic female gametes are fertilized by two immotile sperm cells conveyed by the pollen tube. The two sperm cells are arranged in tandem with a leading pollen tube nucleus to form the male germ unit and are placed under the same genetic controls. Genes controlling double fertilization have been identified, but whether each sperm cell is able to fertilize either female gamete is still unclear. The dynamics of individual sperm cells after their release in the female tissue remain largely unkno

Histopathology of alopecia: a clinicopathological approach to diagnosis.

Interpretation of the histopathological findings of primary scarring and non-scarring alopecias may prove daunting. This is especially true if the biopsy specimen is inadequate, and the clinical history and pattern of the alopecia are not known. Common forms of scarring alopecias discussed here are the lymphocytic (discoid lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, pseudopelade of Brocq), the neutrophilic (folliculitis decalvans, dissecting folliculitis), and the mixed (acne keloidalis) entities. The non-scarring alopecias reviewed are androgenic alopec

Structural analysis of the venom glands of the armed spider Phoneutria nigriventer (Keyserling, 1891): microanatomy, fine structure and confocal observations.

Spiders belonging to the genus Phoneutria (Perty, 1833), most commonly known as 'armed' spiders, are among the most dangerous species in Brazil due to high toxicity of their venom, associated with their habit of invading domestic or specific areas such as banana plantations. The venom of Phoneutria spiders is secreted by a pair of venom glands located inside their cephalothoraxes and connected to the chelicerae by two independent ducts. In the present study, the microanatomy and histological structure of the venom glands of Phoneutria nigriventer (Keyserling, 1891) were examined in detail by h

Intraoral and transoral fine needle aspiration. A review of 25 cases.

During a four year period, 25 intraoral and transoral fine needle aspirations were performed. The sites aspirated were the parapharyngeal space (7), palate (4), floor of mouth (3), tongue (3) and a variety of other intraoral sites (8). Squamous cell carcinoma, the most common malignancy encountered, was correctly diagnosed in six cases. Other malignancies correctly diagnosed were 2 malignant lymphomas, 1 mucoepidermoid carcinoma and 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma. One malignant case called "carcinoma, probably adenoid cystic carcinoma" proved to be a mucoepidermoid carcinoma. One case called "susp

[The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and osteogenesis imperfecta. A study of its embryologic development].

Although the most common oral manifestation of osteogenesis imperfecta is dentinogenesis imperfecta, several authors have described jaw fractures and radiolucent bone lesions associated with this disease. The authors, after reporting the main features of this disease, compare the cranial embryologic growth in twice fetuses of a 15 weeks old: one of these with osteogenesis imperfecta.

[Neurons in the visual cortex of Microtus brandti].

Neurons were described in the visual Cortex of Microtus brandti, a Mongolian harmful rodent living in day-activity. We find following types of neurons in our Golgi-material: 1. spiny neurons: pyramidal and stellate neurons. 2. smooth or sparsely spined neurons: smooth, large neurons, sparsely spined small neurons with descending axons, sparsely spined neurons with ascending axons. Double-bouquet-, chandelier and neuroglioforme cells are not impregnated. There are no bipolare neurons (Martinotti cells) among the neurons with ascending axons. The small, sparsely spined neurons are not only in la

Membranous lipodystrophy (Nasu-Hakola disease) with thalamic degeneration: report of an autopsied case.

An autopsied case of membranous lipodystrophy (Nasu-Hakola disease, NHD) with thalamic degeneration was reported. A 34-year-old Japanese man was diagnosed as having NHD by bone biopsy prior to the onset of clinical symptoms. His maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother are cousins, but this family history is negative for NHD. He developed frontal lobe syndrome at the age of 35 with progressive dementia, and died of acute renal failure at the age of 46. Gross inspection of the brain detected atrophy and softening of the cerebral white matter, predominantly in the frontal lobe. Microscopica

Translingual approach of the basal surface of the diencephalon of the rat and retrograde labeling from the median eminence.

A unique surgical procedure is described by which the basal surface of the diencephalon can be exposed without cannulation of the trachea. The basal surface of the diencephalon is exposed through a midsagittal incision by splitting the oral diaphragm, tongue, and soft palate respectively. Then a small hole is drilled in the base of the skull. After manipulation on the base of the brain is completed, the hole in the skull is plugged with Histoacryl and the soft palate and tongue are sutured. Rats having such interventions survive in excellent condition for days without the need of intensive med

The transverse anatomy of androgenic alopecia.

Twenty-five biopsy specimens from the balding frontal scalp of five patients were studied. Processing included vertical and transverse (horizontal) sectioning, toluidine blue and hematoxylin and eosin staining, and fixed and frozen sectioning. Findings included decreased hair density, increased numbers of vellus hairs, and alteration of the normal follicular architecture. Transverse frozen sectioning with toluidine blue staining appeared to be a rapid and reliable tool for studying androgenic alopecia.

Histochemical study of normal and collapsed tracheas in dogs.

Tracheas from 15 toy breed dogs with normal tracheas and 6 dogs with collapsed tracheas were examined histologically and histochemically. Tracheal cartilage was analyzed for chondroitin sulfate by means of alcian blue (CEC method) and for calcium with alizarin red S. Cartilage arcs from dogs with collapsed tracheas had areas that were apparently hypocellular, and some had other areas that appeared like fibrocartilage or fibrous tissue. Histochemically, collapsed tracheal cartilage had less chondroitin sulfate and calcium than did normal tracheal cartilage. Cartilage arcs from the collapsed tra

Rapid cytologic diagnosis of respiratory cryptosporidiosis in chickens.

A method is presented for the rapid cytologic detection of cryptosporidial oocysts in Diff-Quik and modified Kinyoun acid-fast-stained tracheal imprints. On Diff-Quik-stained preparations, cryptosporidial oocysts were observed attached to the apical ends of respiratory epithelial cells or scattered throughout the imprint. These oocysts were round to oval, measured approximately 6 to 7 micron in diameter, and appeared faintly blue with fine pink granules. In modified Kinyoun acid-fast-stained tracheal imprints, the oocysts usually were pink to bright red against a blue background. Cytologic exa

[A case of localized amyloidosis of the urethra].

A case of localized amyloidosis of the urethra is reported. A 42-year-old man visited with the complaint of urethral discharge and urethral tumor on May 24, 1985. A small fingertip sized, elastic hard mass was present on the left side of the external urethral meatus. Cold cup biopsy of the urethral tumor was done. Histological examination of the tumor showed amorphous eosinophilic tissue staining. Green birefringence indicating amyloidosis by Congo red staining was observed under polarized light microscope. Since the patient's symptoms were minimal, no specific therapy was instituted.

Alder anomaly accompanied by a mutation of the myeloperoxidase structural gene.

In this paper, a third form of Alder anomaly is described. In addition to the morphological changes which are characteristic of this anomaly, the peroxidase of the neutrophil polymorphonuclear leukocytes (NPNL) is abnormal in its properties. It is resistant to the fixation step in the May-Grünwald Giemsa procedure and is similar, therefore, to the eosinophil peroxidase. In the phenotype observed, 2 genetic changes are probably involved: one is a change in the regulation of NPNL granulation, the other is a mutation in the myeloperoxidase structural gene. In the light of these new findings, 3 fo

Histopathological diagnostics of liver amoebiasis in Cambodia.

Results of histopathological examination of a solitary chronical amoebic abscess in the liver of a patient from Cambodia are described. The abscess was at a proliferously reparative phase and Entamoeba histolytica was detected at the border between the necrosis and inner wall of abscess, as well as in the proper non-specific granulation tissue of the inner layers of abscess capsule. A differential diagnosis of the amoebic abscess from similar parasitary or pseudoparasitary liver lesions and differential diagnosis of amoebae in histological sections are given. Mayer's hemalum-methyl salicylate: a stain-clearing technique for observations within whole ovules.

Nondissected ovaries of tuber-bearing Solanum sp. were stained with Mayer's hemalum, a positive stain for chromatin and nucleoli, and then optically cleared with methyl salicylate, a clearing agent. Clarity, resolution and contrast within the ovules dissected from ovaries were comparable to those of sectioned, paraffin embedded ovaries. Contrast within ovules greatly exceeded that of unstained and nonspecifically stained clearings, and eliminated the need of special optics, i.e., Nomarski interference-contrast optics, for optimal viewing and photography. Much less time and labor were required

[Unusual cytologic aspects of cervico-vaginal trichomoniasis. Study of cervico-vaginal smears stained by the Papanicolaou's method].

Trichomonas vaginalis has been recognized by cytologists in Papanicolaou-stained smears of cervical and vaginal secretions for some years. The highest percentage of positive Trichomonas vaginalis detection was obtained with this technique. Classical cytologic aspects of Trichomonas vaginalis infection on Papanicolaou-stained smears have been commonly reported: cytoplasmic alterations with amphophilia, eosinophilia, perinuclear halo, vacuolisation; nuclear abnormalities with pycnosis, dysplasia-like atypia. These cytologic changes represented the indirect cytologic signs of Trichomonas vaginali
