Jerusalem artichoke stalk and tuber can serve as a low cost feedstock for the production of 2,3-butanediol. However, like other lignocellulosic materials, the sugar concentration in the hydrolysate prepared from Jerusalem artichoke stalk is too low to be utilized effectively by microorganisms. In this paper a novel strategy was proposed to increase the sugar concentration by adding Jerusalem artichoke tuber into the hydrolysate of the stalk. BACKGROUND: Most patients with childhood non-organic growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) produce a normal GH peak as young adults. Our objectives were to better define this transient GHD and evaluate the factors influencing the growth response of patients with pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS).
METHODS: We studied 72 prepubertal patients with a GH peak < 6.7 ng/ml after 2 stimulation tests, treated with 0.2 mg GH/kg/w for at least 3 years. Group 1 (n = 53, 4.7 +/- 4.0 years) had PSIS and Group 2 (n = 19, 9.2 +/- 3.0 years) had transient GHD and normal pituitary.

The authors present the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of diabetes insipidus (DI) 1 year after she was found to have a Stage 3 (of 4) estrogen receptor-positive infiltrating ductal adenocarcinoma of the left breast with pulmonary and bone metastases. PURPOSE: To evaluate the disappearance or relocation patterns of posterior pituitary bright spot (PPBS) in the infundibuloneurohypophyseal (INH) system and endocrinologic implications in large pituitary adenomas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with adenoma and supradiaphragmatic extension were classified into PPBS-visible and PPBS-nonvisible groups on the basis of findings at preoperative T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Ricin is a category B agent for bioterrorism, and Shiga toxins are the primary virulence factors of Shiga toxin (Stx) producing Escherichia coli.
