Assistive technology accommodations for post-secondary students with mental health disabilities: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: The use of assistive technology (AT) for people with disabilities is well researched and prevalent in education. Growing numbers of students now self-identify as having mental health diagnoses and register for accommodations at post-secondary institutions. The apparent gap in the literature specifically relating to AT support in this population necessitated a more systematic search. This scoping review maps the literature regarding AT interventions to support young adults with mental health disabilities in post-secondary institutions such as universities and colleges. METHODOLOGY: Fo

Integrating injury and violence prevention content into a tribal college public health curricula: a collaboration with Diné College, Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme and Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy.

Injuries disproportionately affect American Indian communities, yet few efforts focus on training students or building workforce capacity in injury and violence prevention (IVP) within these communities. To address this gap, a collaborative planning team from Diné College, Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme met biweekly during the 2023-2025 academic years to integrate IVP into undergraduate public health training. The collaboration incorporated IVP competencies into public health courses and supported student practicum expe

Developing a medical school alcohol policy.

The health and lifestyle problems of medical students and doctors give cause for concern on several fronts. We have developed a health policy for staff and students in Newcastle Medical School. This policy presents integrated recommendations relating to six key areas, i.e. alcohol, physical activity, sexual health, stress, occupational health and safety, and diet. The methods used to develop recommendations in relation to alcohol are described here. They were adopted by the working groups developing recommendations in the other areas. There were four key stages to policy development: establish

Student mental health outcomes of a clustered SMART for developing an adaptive implementation strategy to support school-based CBT delivery.

PURPOSE: Most youth experiencing anxiety/depression lack access to evidence-based mental health practices (EBPs). School-delivered care improves access, and various support can help school professionals (SPs; school social workers, counselors) deliver EBPs, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Understanding implementation strategies' impact on downstream mental health outcomes is crucial to scaling up EBPs to address the treatment gap, but it has rarely been assessed. METHODS: This paper compares implementation strategies' impact on change in student outcomes, collected as exploratory out

The perceptions of first point of contact roles in primary care by pre-registration students of the allied health professions.

AIM: To develop a better understanding of the perceptions of first point of contact roles within primary care by pre-registration students of the Allied Health Professions (AHPs). BACKGROUND: General practice in the UK is under growing pressure from declining general practitioner (GP) numbers and increased service demand. The National Health Service (NHS) is attempting to mitigate this demand by making more effective use of its highly experienced workforce through the creation of first contact practitioners (FCPs). Working in primary care, FCPs are highly experienced AHPs with three or more y

The impact of violence on adolescents in schools: a case study on the role of school-based health centers.

School-based health centers (SBHCs) emerged in the late 1960s as a response to concerns about the health care needs of undeserved children and adolescents who were often left out of the health care system. Most SBHCs provide an array of primary health care services such as routine health screenings, immunizations, acute care for common conditions, behavioral risk assessments, and health education on various topics. One of the most important functions of an SBHC is the provision of psychological services for teenagers experiencing depression, adjustment difficulties, substance abuse, and trauma

Childhood homelessness, resilience, and adolescent mental health: A prospective, person-centered approach.

School districts and other service providers are increasingly aware of the substantial mental health needs of students experiencing family homelessness. Past findings are mixed regarding whether homelessness conveys unique risk beyond the risks associated with extreme poverty. With prospective longitudinal data on homelessness experiences across childhood, we utilized latent profile analysis as a person-centered approach to conceptualizing mental health outcomes in adolescence for 3,778 youth. We considered literal family homelessness as well as families living doubled-up, and we employed prop

This paper addresses bullying of United Kingdom (UK) nursing students whilst on work placement as a specific issue of inter-group difficulty that currently affects nurses and students working in the UK National Health Service. The authors begin by discussing the concept of bullying and sharing the types of bullying reported in two recent studies involving UK nursing students. Both studies illustrate the effects that negative workplace experiences can have on new entrants to the profession. After reviewing various individual solutions which have been recommended for reducing bullying, they sugg

Characteristics and correlates of stealing in college students.

BACKGROUND: Stealing is a fairly common behaviour among young adults. Understanding the potential associations and characteristics of individuals who steal may help educational institutions, health services and young people themselves resolve difficulties before the behaviour impacts on their academic performance and health. AIMS: We aim to test the hypothesis that desires to steal among students would be associated with worse academic achievements and higher rates of mood and impulse control disorders. METHODS: One thousand eight hundred and five students completed the College Student Compu
