Report of metastatic ileal neuroendocrine tumor to the submandibular gland.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of small intestinal origin are generally slow-growing tumors with a relatively high propensity for metastases to surrounding organs and lymphatic tissue. We present the first case of an ileal NET metastasizing to the submandibular gland in a woman with metastatic carcinoid syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female presented with a four-month history of a palpable, left-sided neck mass. The patient had a history of metastatic neuroendocrine tumor of ileal origin, initially treated with primary resection 4.5 years previously, with known subdiaphr…

[Paying attention to the protection of the function organ of submandibular gland].

Submandibular gland is an important human function organ. With the wide application of sialoendoscope and new understanding of IgG4 related sialadenitis, a lot of submandibular glands which were previously considered to be removed are preserved. However, some submandibular glands which might be preserved are still unfortunately sacrificed. Therefore, we advocate the popularization and promotion of new knowledge and techniques and should pay more attention to the protection of the function organ of submandibular gland.

Dysgenetic polycystic disease of the minor and submandibular salivary glands.

BACKGROUND: Dysgenetic polycystic salivary gland disease is a rare pathology. No case of minor salivary gland involvement has been reported in the literature. METHODS: A female patient presented with bilateral tumors of the parotid glands, bilateral submandibular gland enlargement, and multiple cystic lesions of the oral mucosa. MRI of the neck was performed along with fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the parotid tumors and excisional biopsy of an oral lesion. RESULTS: Imaging and FNA findings of the parotid glands were suggestive of bilateral Warthin tumors. Excisional biopsy of the oral les…

Oncocytoma of the Submandibular Gland: Diagnosis and Treatment Based on Clinicopathology.

Background. Submandibular oncocytomas are rare benign salivary gland neoplasms. They are typically found in Caucasian patients aged 50-70 years with no gender preference. Due to the overlapping histological and clinical features of head and neck tumors, they are often misdiagnosed. Methods. We report a case of unilateral submandibular gland oncocytoma in a 63-year-old Caucasian man. Results. The patient underwent unilateral submandibular gland resection and histopathologic analysis of the tumor specimen. On follow-up at 2 weeks and 1 year, no recurrence was identified. Conclusion. Submandibula…

Expression and localization of calpain 3 in the submandibular gland of mice.

OBJECTIVES: Calpains comprise a family of intracellular Ca2+-dependent cysteine proteases and are considered to play roles in various physiological phenomena with limited proteolytic activities against specific substrates. We herein revealed the expression and localization of calpain 3, the muscle-type calpain, in the submandibular gland (SMG) of mice. DESIGN: The expression of the mRNA for conventional, ubiquitous calpains 1 and 2 and skeletal muscle-specific calpain 3 was examined in the major salivary glands of mice using RT-PCR, and the expression and localization of calpain 3 protein was…

Actinomycosis of submandibular gland: An unusual presentation of a rare entity.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection that can occur in the head and neck region. Though cervico-facial actinomycosis is well described, primary actinomycosis of the salivary gland is rare and can present as any other suppurative infection or can simulate malignancy. We hereby report a case of a young male with primary actinomycosis of submandibular gland, presenting as acute suppurative infection and diagnosed on histopathology.

Submandibular gland needle biopsy for the diagnosis of Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates salivary gland biopsies in living patients with Parkinson disease (PD). METHODS: Patients with PD for ≥5 years underwent outpatient transcutaneous needle core biopsies (18-gauge or 16-gauge) of 1 submandibular gland. Minor salivary glands were removed via a small incision in the lower lip. Tissue was fixed in formalin and serial 6-µm paraffin sections were immunohistochemically stained for phosphorylated α-synuclein and reviewed for evidence of Lewy type α-synucleinopathy (LTS). RESULTS: Fifteen patients with PD were biopsied: 9 female/6 male, mean age 68.7…

Dual pathology of the submandibular gland: plasmacytoma and pleomorphic adenoma.

Synchronous tumours of different histological types involving the salivary gland are very rare. There have been cases reported in the literature of such tumours occurring in the parotid gland. A 52-year-old man presented with a 4-year history of gradually increasing painless swelling in the right submandibular region. The ultrasound scan of the neck showed features suggestive of a submandibular sialadenitis. The right submandibular gland was then surgically excised and sent for histopathological examination. The features showed a unique dual pathology of the submandibular gland, that is, a pla…

Heterotopic intestinal cyst of the submandibular gland: a case study.

Heterotopic gastrointestinal cysts are rarely found in the oral cavity. Most of these cysts are lined with gastric mucosa and involve the tongue. There have been no reported heterotopic intestinal cysts of the submandibular gland that are completely lined with colonic mucosa. An 8-year-old girl presented with an enlarging swelling in the left submandibular area, and a 4-cm unilocular cyst was fully excised. The cyst was completely lined with colonic mucosa that was surrounded by smooth muscle layer, and the lining cells were positive for CDX-2, an intestinal marker, indicating a high degree of…

Sclerotic effect of bleomycin on the submandibular gland: an experimental model.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sclerotic effect of bleomycin on the submandibular gland histopathologically and assess it as a possible alternative therapy for sialorrhea. METHODS: An experimental model was designed and 18 New Zealand white rabbits were used. The rabbits were divided into two groups: a bleomycin group (n=9) and a sham group (n=9). The submandibular glands of the bleomycin group were injected with 0.3 ml bleomycin (3mg/ml) while the sham group received 0.3 ml saline. Four weeks after the procedure, the glands were removed. Histopathological studies including hematoxylin-eosin and…

Transcervical extirpation of the submandibular gland: the University of Marburg experience.

Surgical excision of the submandibular gland is the treatment of choice for lesions affecting this gland. The data of 87 patients, who underwent a transcervical extirpation of the submandibular gland as a single operation over the past 10 years at a single institution in Germany, were available for analysis. Sialolithiasis (73.5%) was the most common reason leading to excision, followed by benign (18.5%) and malignant tumors (8%). Complications included temporary palsies of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve (5.7%), the lingual nerve (5.7%), and the hypoglossal nerve (1.1%), an…

Excision of a submandibular gland: a safe day case procedure?

There are considerable benefits, both for patients and hospitals, if operations are done as day case procedures. Excision of a submandibular gland is a relatively common operation and it is usual practice for surgeons to be cautious, admit the patient for an overnight stay, and leave a drain in place. To assess the amount of postoperative bleeding into the wound (and hence potential risk to the airway) we have studied prospectively the amount of drainage that occurs. Sixty consecutive patients admitted for overnight postoperative monitoring after excision of a submandibular gland had a suction…

The historical evolution of the understanding of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands.

The discovery of the major salivary glands was primarily a story of the establishment of the glands major excretory ducts. Occurring during … ate the works of the 15th century anatomists. Next, we look at the discovery and description of the submandibular gland's duct by Thomas Wharton (1614-1673) in his landmark book, Adenographia sive glandularum totius corporis descriptio (Adenographia or the description of the glands of the entire body) (1656). Next, the somewhat unexpected discovery of the duct of the …

Comparison of the intraoral and transcervical approach in submandibular gland excision.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the benefits of the intraoral approach for removal of the submandibular gland (SMG) by comparing it with the usual method of the transcervical approach. Sixteen patients who required SMG resection for benign disorders were divided into two surgical groups who underwent surgery via the intraoral (n = 8) or transcervical (n = 8) approach. The intraoral approach (IOA) consisted of an incision on the floor of mouth from the caruncle of Wharton's duct to the retromolar trigone while the transcervical approach (TCA) consisted of an incision along the natural …

Intraoral approach for removal of large sialolith in submandibular gland.

Sialolithiasis is a benign pathology that occurs most frequently in the submandibular salivary gland due to its anatomic features. Depending on the size and degree of calcification, a sialolith can be visible in radiographic examinations. Patients commonly experience pain and/or edema when the ducts are obstructed. The authors report two cases of sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland after searching for the source of swelling in the submandibular region. The diagnosis was confirmed by clinical and tomographic examinations. Despite the considerable size of the sialoliths, treatment consiste…
