BACKGROUND: Although orthodromic atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT) using retrograde conduction through an accessory pathway (AP) … uggested that orthodromic AVRT may be sufficient to cause WPW-related sudden cardiac death (SCD) or sudden infant death syndrome via fatal ischaemia and ventricular arrhythmias even when the effective refractory period of an antegrade AP conduction is long or even when an antegrade AP is not present. It is possible that an AP ablation in those who have a history of a …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Heat stress and hyperthermia are common findings in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) victims. It has been suggested that thermal stress can increase the risk of SIDS directly via lethal hyperthermia or indirectly by altering autonomic functions. Major changes in sleep, thermoregulation, cardiovascular function, and the emergence of circadian functions occur at the age at which the risk of SIDS peaks-explaining the greater vulnerability at this stage of development. Here, we review the literature data on (i) heat stress and hyperthermia as direct risk factors for S…

INTRODUCTION: Even after 'back-to-sleep' campaigns, sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) continues to be the leading cause of death for infants 1 month to 1 year old in developed countries, with devastating social, psychological and legal implications for families. To sustainably tackle this problem and decrease the number of SUIDs, a French SUID registry was initiated in 2015 to (1) inform prevention with standardised data, (2) understand the mechanisms leading to SUID and the contribution of the already known or newly suggested risk factors and (3) gather a multidisciplinary group of expert

IMPORTANCE: Sudden infant death syndrome remains the leading cause of death in infants aged 1 month to 1 year in the United States.
OBSERVATIONS: While its exact cause is unknown, sudden infant death syndrome is believed to be multifactorial, ie, occurs in infants with underlying biological vulnerability who experience an exogenous stressor, such as prone/side sleeping or soft bedding, during a critical developmental period. Much genetic and physiologic evidence points to impaired arousal responses to hypercarbia and hypoxia, which ultimately leads to asphyxia. Known risk factors for infants …

Intracranial aneurysm rupture is the most serious and potentially lethal extra-renal manifestation of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Almost all cases of ruptured intracranial aneurysm occur in adult patients with a median age of rupture of 40 years. We report the occurrence of sudden death in a newborn infant born to a mother with typical ADPKD in the first week of life. Post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death to be subarachnoid haemorrhage with focal glomerular and tubular cysts detected in the kidney. This is the earliest reported case of intracranial aneur

UNLABELLED: We present a case of sudden death of a 1-month-old male infant with heart, brainstem and genetic polymorphism involvement. Previously considered quite healthy, the child died suddenly and unexpectedly during sleep. The autopsy protocol included an in-depth anatomopathological examination of both the autonomic nervous system and the cardiac conduction system, and molecular analysis of the serotonin transporter gene promoter region, in which a specific genetic condition seems to be associated with sudden infant death. Histological examination revealed the presence of congenital cardi…

The study aims were twofold: 1) identify the localization and the cytoarchitecture of the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) in the human fetus and infant and 2) ascertain if the RTN, given its essential role in animal studies for the maintenance of breathing and chemoreception, showed abnormalities in victims of sudden perinatal and infant death (sudden intrauterine unexplained death/SIUD - and sudden infant death syndrome/SIDS). We examined SIDS and SIUD cases and Controls (n=58) from 34 gestational weeks to 8 months of postnatal age by complete autopsy, in-depth autonomic nervous system histologi…

The association between sudden infant death syndrome and immunization is frequently discussed. Serious adverse events following vaccination have generally been defined as those adverse events that result in permanent disability, hospitalization or prolongation of hospitalization, life threatening illness, congenital anomaly or death. They are generally referred to the inherent properties of the vaccine (vaccine reaction) or some error in the immunization process (programme error). The event could also be totally unrelated but only temporally linked to immunization (coincidental event). A fatal…

BACKGROUND: Some victims of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are found with their heads covered with bedclothes, but the significance of this is uncertain. The aim of this review is to describe the prevalence of head covering, the magnitude of the risk and how far the suggested causal mechanisms agree with current epidemiological evidence.
METHODS: Systematic review of population-based age-matched controlled studies.
RESULTS: Controlled observations of head covering for the final sleep were found in 10 studies. The pooled prevalence in SIDS victims was 24.6% (95% CI 22.3% to 27.1%) compar…

An autopsy case of a 4-month-old boy who died immediately after being fed by a member of the staff of a day-care centre is described in this report. An autopsy certified that the cause of death was the aspiration of milk. There was no other apparent reason for the aspiration of milk into the trachea except for the left superior cornual defect of the thyroid cartilage. We therefore conclude that it was this defect which led to the aspiration of milk into the trachea.

The cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is unknown. Sleep-related impairment of respiratory control and arousal are postulated; hyperdopaminergic and hyposerotonergic dysfunction may contribute to events leading to infant apnea and SIDS. Psychosocial adversity and impulsive and compulsive behaviors characterize some families of SIDS victims. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common hereditary neurobehavioral disorder characterized by the frequent presence of impulsive and compulsive behaviors. Sleep disorders are common and include sleep apnea and abnormal arousal. Hyperdopaminergic and hyp…

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is responsible for the death of 10,000 infants annually in the U.S.A. The cause of these deaths is not known; all SIDS infants studied died during sleep in a silent fashion and there are no specific lesions observable post mortem. It may be of significance, however, that nearly half of SIDS infants had a respiratory tract infection in the last two weeks of life while forty percent had bloody froth over their mouths when found, presumably pulmonary oedema fluid. It is hypothesis that improper feeding or diarrhoea may likewise be involved in SIDS and that …

Carotid bodies (CBs) are peripheral chemoreceptors that can undergo compensatory hypertrophy and hyperplasia in some patients with chronic hypoxemia. At the Children's Hospital morphometric and biochemical analyses were done on CBs obtained at autopsy from 89 infants in the first year of life to determine if there were statistically significant differences in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS, n = 38) compared with an age-matched control population (n = 51). Mean combined weights of CBs from SIDS victims were greater than controls in the 1- to 4-month age interval (mean = 3.4 mg, p less than …

BACKGROUND: Though recommended by numerous guidelines, adherence to supine sleep position during the first year of life is variable across the globe.
METHODS: This systematic review of randomized trials and observational studies assessed the effect of the supine compared to non-supine (prone or side) sleep position on healthy newborns. Key outcomes were neonatal mortality, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), acute life-threatening event (ALTE), neurodevelopment, and positional plagiocephaly. We searched MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE, …

We assessed CO(2) gas dispersal potential of bedding that had actually been used by 26 infants diagnosed with sudden unexpected infant death using a baby mannequin model. The age of victims ranged from 1 to 12 months. In some cases, the parents alleged that the infant faces were not covered with bedding when they were found. The parent's memories, however, may not have been accurate; therefore, we examined the potential for gas dispersal based on the supposition that the bedding had covered their faces. The mannequin was connected with a respirator set on the tidal volume and respiratory rates

INTRODUCTION: Differences in certification of similar sudden infant deaths exists among forensic pathologists. This study sought to measure adherence to intra-agency guidelines for infant death certification in one jurisdiction and describe variables that may be associated with the differentiation of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asphyxia, and undetermined death certifications.
METHODS: A retrospective study of deaths at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner identified 427 sudden infant deaths with investigation and autopsy whose cause of death was ruled SIDS, asphyxia, or…

The Coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) is one of the main pathogens causing hand-foot-and-mouth disease in young children. It is a low-virulence virus rarely involved in serious illness. It is seen sporadically or in outbreaks all over the world. We report a case of sudden unexplained death in infancy, SUDI, in a 3 and 1/2 months old infant, in which a thorough post mortem investigation pointed at a fatal infection with CV-A16 as the most likely cause of death. Only five cases of fatal CV-A16 infection have been published and none of these presented as sudden death. The fatal cases involved two infan
