Laser Therapy for Incision Healing in 9 Dogs.

Laser therapy is becoming common place in veterinary medicine with little evidence proving efficacy or dosages. This study evaluated surgical wound healing in canines. Twelve Dachshunds underwent thoraco-lumbar hemilaminectomies for intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Digital photographs were taken of their incisions within 24 h of surgery and 1, 3, 5, 7, and 21 days postoperatively. The first three dogs were used to create a standardized scar scale to score the other dogs' incision healing. The remaining 9 dogs were randomly assigned to either receive 8 J/cm2 laser therapy once a day for 7 da

Peripheral polyneuropathy secondary to nitrofurantoin administration in an adult cat.

A 6-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was referred because of a 5-day history of walking with a crouched hindlimb stance. Before referral, the cat had been recovering from perineal urethrostomy surgery, preceded by 6 wk of recurrent urinary tract infections, with 3 urinary blockages during that interval. The cat was being managed on nitrofurantoin (4 mg/kg, q8h), prescribed by the referring veterinarian and administered for only 1 d before the perineal urethrostomy surgery. Two days after the nitrofurantoin was restarted, the cat began displaying the crouched hindlimb stance. At t

Primary diaphragmatic undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was referred for acute onset of dyspnoea. Thoracic radiographs performed by the referring veterinarian revealed the presence of pleural effusion. Upon presentation, the cat was dyspnoeic, and cardiopulmonary auscultation revealed muffled heart sounds and bilaterally increased bronchovesicular sounds. Radiographic study of the thorax revealed bilateral pleural effusion and a soft tissue opacity in the dorsocaudal region of the left hemithorax. A whole-body contrast-enhanced CT scan identified a soft tissue mass arising from the l

Antimicrobials administration, treatment outcome and bacterial susceptibility in canine pyometra cases subjected to ovariohysterectomy.

Pyometra is a bacterial uterine infection that frequently affects intact older bitches. The treatment of choice is ovariohysterectomy, often associated with perioperative antimicrobial therapy. The aim of this retrospective investigation was to evaluate the antibiotic choice at different administration times (pre-surgery, at surgery/during hospitalization, and post-surgery) against complications and outcomes, considering the susceptibility profile of bacteria. The medical records of 51 bitches referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Turin (January 2021-November 2023)

Multimodal Analgesia Provides Superior Postoperative Pain Control Following Orthopedic Surgery in Small-Breed Dogs.

Effective pain control after orthopedic surgery is essential in veterinary practice, particularly in small-breed dogs with low physiological reserves. This study aimed to compare the analgesic efficacy and tolerability of five postoperative pain protocols across nine surgical procedures. A retrospective analysis was conducted in 205 small-breed dogs (≤7 kg) undergoing orthopedic surgeries. Dogs were assigned to one of five analgesic protocols: (A) carprofen, (B) tramadol-lidocaine-ketamine continuous-rate infusion, (C) butorphanol continuous-rate infusion, (D) hydromorphone continuous-rate inf

Total intravenous anaesthesia in a goat undergoing craniectomy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral coenurosis is a disease of the central nervous system in sheep and goats, and is usually fatal unless surgical relief is provided. Information regarding neuroanaesthesia in veterinary medicine in goats is scant. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe anaesthetic management of an intact female goat (2 years; 16 kg) presented for craniectomy. The goat was sedated with xylazine (0.05 mg kg-1, i.m.) and morphine (0.05 mg kg-1, i.m.). General anaesthesia was induced 20 min later with propofol and maintained with a constant rate infusion of propofol (0.2 mg kg-1 min-1). A cuffed endotr

Does Perioperative Administration of Rabies Vaccine in Dogs Undergoing Surgical Sterilization Induce an Adequate Antibody Response?

High-volume spay/neuter events may facilitate access to free-roaming dogs to administer rabies vaccination, but important questions remain regarding the effect of surgery and anesthesia on the immune response to a vaccine administered in the perioperative period. This study evaluated the immunogenicity of primary rabies vaccination in dogs when administered during the immediate perioperative period at the time of surgical sterilization (ovariohysterectomy/orchidectomy). Healthy dogs of both sexes presenting for surgical sterilization who had never been vaccinated against rabies virus were elig

The Long-Term Efficacy Study of Multiple Allogeneic Canine Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transplantations Combined With Surgery in Four Dogs With Lumbosacral Spinal Cord Injury.

Severe lumbosacral pain, paraparesis or paraplegia, and urinary incontinence are common but frustrating problems in dogs with lumbosacral spinal cord injury (SCI). The surgical interventions including stabilization and decompression may not restore satisfying neurological functions in severe SCI. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Ad-MSCs) show benefits in immunomodulation, anti-inflammation, and promotion of axonal growth and remyelination, and also display efficacy in several diseases in veterinary medicine. In this report, four dogs presented with fracture of sacrum vertebrae or

Localization of the mandibular canal in brachycephalic dogs using computed tomography.

For some surgical procedures in veterinary dentistry including exodontia, orthognathic surgery, orthopedic surgery, oncologic surgery, and for the placement of dental implants, it is important to know the accurate location of the neurovascular structures within the mandibular canal. The aim of this research was to determine the course of the mandibular canal in the mandible and its relationship with other anatomical structures in brachycephalic dogs using computerized tomography. Mandibles from 10 brachycephalic cadaver dogs were evaluated. Measurements were taken in relation to the lingual, v

Duodenal perforation in a puppy with canine parvovirus infection.

A 2-month-old puppy was brought to a veterinary hospital with diarrhea, vomiting, and anorexia. The test for canine parvovirus was positive, and she was hospitalized for supportive care. Her gastrointestinal symptoms initially improved; however, vomiting and lethargy developed again in the second week of hospitalization. Abdominal ultrasonography results were suspicious of a duodenal perforation. Cytology of the abdominal effusion confirmed septic peritonitis; therefore, emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed. The surgery was successful, and the puppy recovered fully. When symptoms rec

Use of ultrasound to locate retained testes in dogs and cats.

Ultrasound was used to locate undescended testes in 30 dogs and 4 cats where the final testicular location was determined surgically. Time between ultrasound and surgery ranged between 0 and 17 days. Forty-three testes (63.2%) were retained and 42/43 (97.7%) were detected ultrasonographically. Retained testes were located in the abdomen (n = 28) and inguinal region (n = 14). One retained testis could not be identified with use of ultrasound. Locations of retained testes ranged from the caudal pole of the kidney to the inguinal region. Descriptions of testicular echogenicity and size were not a
