Swimming of larval zebrafish: ontogeny of body waves and implications for locomotory development.

Fish larvae, like most adult fish, undulate their bodies to propel themselves. A detailed kinematic study of the larval body wave is a prerequisite to formulate a set of functional requirements that the locomotor system must fulfil to generate the observed swimming kinematics. Lateral displacement and curvature profiles were obtained for zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae at 2-21 days post-fertilisation for three swimming behaviours (cyclic swimming, slow starts and fast startle responses) using high-speed video. During cyclic swimming, fish larvae maintain tail beat frequencies of up to 100 Hz. T…

Endurance swimming, intravascular hemolysis, anemia, and iron depletion. New perspective on athlete's anemia.

Swimmers were evaluated for the anemia, intravascular hemolysis, and iron deficiency reported in endurance runners. Plasma concentrations of ferritin, haptoglobin, and hemoglobin were measured in nine collegiate swimmers through the competitive season and in 23 adult swimmers before and after endurance races of 1.5 km to 10 km. About 10 percent of the swimmers had low hemoglobin concentrations. The severity of this "swimmer's anemia" correlated with the amount of swimming in both men and women. Intravascular hemolysis occurred during all the races; the fastest swimmers in the longest races had…

Summary of 58 cases of loss of consciousness during underwater swimming and diving.

It is well accepted that hyperventilation before breath hold swimming and diving makes it possible for a person to extend the time under water. Less well known is the fact that this maneuver can cause loss of consciousness due to hypoxia. This accident happens almost exclusively to males (56 cases). The most common age group was 16-20 years (range 12-33 years). All were known to be good swimmers or divers. Approximately 80% of the cases occurred in guarded pools. Thirty-five subjects survived the accident and of the twenty-three fatalities, there was only one good autopsy report. In this insta…

Swimming with an LVAD: a critical event in a paediatric patient after seawater exposure.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices are increasingly used in paediatric patients with end-stage heart failure. Although they improve survival and functional capacity, serious complications can occur. CASE: We report an 11-year-old girl with dilated cardiomyopathy supported by a left ventricular assist device (HeartMate 3) as a bridge to transplant. Despite periodic education about the use of a left ventricular assist device, she entered the sea, leading to driveline and battery seawater exposure. She presented with device alarms but was initially stable. Given the risk of corrosion, e

Swim bladder tumor in the young adult scoliotic medaka (Oryzias latipes).

A swim bladder tumor was detected in one scoliotic medaka aged 22 weeks. The tumor was located in the dorsal abdominal cavity, with maximum dimension of 1,850 × 1,500 µm. No swim bladder lumen was identified, and the region where the swim bladder lumen would have been located, was replaced with adipose tissues. The tumor was a non-invasive, expansile, and encapsulated solid mass with a few cysts, and comprised a homogenous population of well-differentiated, densely packed, gas glandular epithelium-like cells. The tumor mass was connected to a rete mirabile that showed a hyperplastic capillary

Maximal Fully Tethered Swim Performance in Para Swimmers With Physical Impairment.

UNLABELLED: The assessment of swimming propulsion should be a cornerstone of Paralympic swimming classification. However, current methods do not objectively account for this component. PURPOSE: To evaluate the swimming propulsion of swimmers with and without physical impairment using a 30-second maximal fully tethered freestyle swim test. METHODS: Tethered forces were recorded during maximal fully tethered swimming in 80 competitive swimmers with (n = 70) and without (n = 10) physical impairment. The relationships between absolute and normalized tether forces and maximal freestyle swim speed…

Microscopic origins of the swim pressure and the anomalous surface tension of active matter.

The unique pressure exerted by active particles-the "swim" pressure-has proven to be a useful quantity in explaining many of the seemingly confounding behaviors of active particles. However, its use has also resulted in some puzzling findings including an extremely negative surface tension between phase separated active particles. Here, we demonstrate that this contradiction stems from the fact that the swim pressure is not a true pressure. At a boundary or interface, the reduction in particle swimming generates a net active force density-an entirely self-generated body force. The pressure at …

The Effect of Acutely Administered Propofol on Forced Swim Test Outcomes in Mice.

Objective: Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is a gamma-aminobutyric acid type A agonist intravenous anesthetic agent used in outpatient settings. Based on anecdotal reports of improved mood in humans following propofol-induced anesthesia, the impact of acute propofol treatment alone or in combination with subchronic fluoxetine dosing was tested on forced swim test (FST) performance. Design: Seventy-two adult male mice (C57/BL6, CRL-provided) were pretreated daily with saline or fluoxetine (20 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) (21 days for cohort 1; 24 days for cohort 2). At 24 hours after the last pre

Swim Bladder as a Novel Biomaterial for Cardiovascular Materials with Anti-Calcification Properties.

Calcification is a major cause of cardiovascular materials failure and deterioration, which leads to the restriction of their wide application. To develop new materials with anti-calcification capability is an urgent clinical requirement. Herein, a natural material derived from swim bladders as one promising candidate is introduced, which is prepared by decellularization and glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinking. Data show that the swim bladder is mainly composed of collagen I, glycosaminoglycan (GAG), and elastin, especially rich in elastin, in accordance with higher elastic modulus in comparison

Strain-dependent sex differences in a long-term forced swim paradigm.

Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from trauma- and stressor-related disorders. The development of improved therapeutic interventions is contingent upon a more complete grasp of both the neural and behavioral dynamics of the stress response in females. The rodent forced swim test (FST) is a valuable animal model for exploring the neurobiological mechanisms responsible for selection of active and passive responses to inescapable stressors, but it is often neglected in 2-day FST studies is the dissociation of innate (Day 1) versus learned (Day 2) coping responses. Here, we used a modifie

Head shaking in the forced swim test: A robust but unexplored sex difference.

Preclinical psychopharmacology research needs novel behavioral indices and improved animal models for both sexes. The forced swim test (FST) is the most popular test for screening antidepressant potential. Sex differences in FST behaviors, such as immobility and swimming, are not consistent among laboratories. Reliable indices, sensitive to sex differences, are required. We identified a robust sex difference in the frequency of headshakes during the standard two session FST, with male rats exhibiting higher number of head shakes than females. Furthermore, we explored whether strain, ageing, se…

Novel insights into the behavioral analysis of mice subjected to the forced-swim test.

The forced-swim test (FST) is one of the most widely used rodent behavioral assays, in which the immobility of animals is used to assess the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs. However, the existing, and mostly arbitrary, criteria used for quantification could lead to biased results. Here we believe we uncovered new confounding factors, revealed new indices to interpret the behavior of mice and propose an unbiased means for quantification of the FST.

Individual differences in the forced swimming test and neurochemical kinetics in the rat brain.

Individual differences in the forced swimming test (FST) could be associated with differential temporal dynamics of gene expression and neurotransmitter activity. We tested juvenile male rats in the FST and classified the animals into those with low and high immobility according to the amount of immobility time recorded in FST. These groups and a control group which did not undergo the FST were sacrificed either 1, 6 or 24 h after the test. We analyzed the expression of the CRF, CRFR1, BDNF and TrkB in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and nucleus accumbens as well as norepinephrine, dopamine…

The effect of GABAmimetics on the duration of immobility in the forced swim test in albino mice.

OBJECTIVES: Studies regarding the role of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in depression are conflicting. Therefore, it was decided to examine the effect of different drugs that enhance the GABA system on the time of immobility induced by the forced swim test (FST). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult albino mice were divided into several groups of six animals. Each group received an intraperitoneal injection of either imipramine (10, 20, or 30 mg/kg), diazepam (0.5, 1, or 2 mg/kg), vigabatrin (100, 200, or 300 mg/kg), zolpidem (2.5, 5, or 10 mg/kg), or alprazolam (1, 2.5, or 5 mg/kg). Validation of video motion-detection scoring of forced swim test in mice.

BACKGROUND: The forced swim test (FST) is used to predict the effectiveness of novel antidepressant treatments. In this test, a mouse or rat is placed in a beaker of water for several minutes, and the amount of time spent passively floating is measured; antidepressants reduce the amount of such immobility. Though the FST is commonly used, manually scoring the test is time-consuming and involves considerable subjectivity. NEW METHOD: We developed a simple MATLAB-based motion-detection method to quantify mice's activity in videos of FST. FST trials are video-recorded from a side view. Each pixe
