Peripheral blood lymphocytes from twenty patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) were analysed for the numbers and proportions of B lymphocytes possessing surface immunoglobulin, cells with Fc receptors, T cella and T cells with receptors for IgM (T mu) or IgG (T gamma). In patients with PSS, B cells and lymphocytes with Fc receptors were comparable in both numbers and proportions to those of the control group. Infectious T lymphocytes were determined in thymuses and spleens of mice acutely infected with LCM virus. Such cells appeared in newborn animals, but their numbers declined when the age at infection increased and none were found in adult mice. Either susceptibility to LCM virus is associated with some degree of immaturity or the probability of murine T lymphocytes to encounter the virus as an infectious entity rather than an immunogen is higher in very young than immunologically mature mice.

Down syndrome (DS) is known for increased incidence of respiratory infections and autoimmune diseases, indicating impaired immunity. Until now, attention has been mainly focused on T lymphocytes. Chromosome analyses were carried out in eight patients with lymphoproliferative disorders of mature T and NK cells. Three cases were characterized by an abnormal expansion of granular lymphocytes (GL), one by a lymphoma of GL with leukemic spread, and four by an OKT4-T-CLL. Cholinergic agonists have previously been shown to augment the ability of sensitized lymphocytes to injure cells bearing the sensitizing alleantigens. The cholinergic receptor of the attacking lymphocyte population has been studied with pharmacological manipulation of an in vitro system that quantitates the injury mediated by sensitized attacking cells upon target cells.
