Public health significance of zoonotic tapeworms in Korea.

Through an epidemiological review on the zoonotic tapeworms in Korea, the frequency and severity of the zoonoses have been recognized. Taeniasis and human cysticercosis are of importance to the public health in Korea. The frequency of taeniasis is 0.3% to 12.7% discovered by stool examination and 4.5% to 38.0% discovered by questionaire survey. Taeniasis occurs more frequently in males than in females and, especially, in both sexes in the age-group of 20 to 49. T. saginata is more common that T. solium. No case of human cysticercosis caused by T.saginata has been reported in Korea. To the cont…

Elucidating the causal mechanisms of Taenia solium transmission in humans, pigs and the environment: A global systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium cysticercosis/taeniasis disease complex is a multifaceted neglected tropical zoonosis. Previous reviews on T. solium cysticercosis/taeniasis risk factors have been limited by geographic region and/or host, making it difficult to understand the complex web of causes underlying infection at the various stages of its life cycle. Our objective was to elucidate the causal mechanisms involved in the transmission of T. solium to all hosts through a systematic review of the literature. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic literature search about the epid…

Updating Taenia asiatica in humans and pigs.

An epidemiological study on taeniasis and cysticercosis in northern India has recently updated the epidemiology of Taenia asiatica. Practically, all the detected cases of taeniasis were caused by T. asiatica, cited for the first time in humans in that country. The finding widens the geographical distribution of T. asiatica, a species wrongly considered an exclusive South-Eastern Asian parasite. Due to the introduction of molecular techniques in Taenia diagnosis, the species is slowly showing its true distribution. A human Taenia species with cosmopolitan hosts (the same as the other two Taenia…

Mass chemotherapy with niclosamide for the control of Taenia solium: population-based safety profile and treatment effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration (MDA) with niclosamide (NSM) can be used to control taeniasis, the cause of neurocysticercosis. NSM is 84.3% effective against taeniasis and is considered safe as it is not absorbed from the intestinal tract. However, information on its safety and effectiveness during MDA is limited. We evaluated the effectiveness of NSM and reported adverse events (AEs) during a cysticercosis elimination program in Tumbes, Peru. METHODS: Three rounds of NSM at 4-month intervals were offered to 77,397 eligible residents. We revisited all participants in their homes 72 h af…

Taenia asiatica: the most neglected human Taenia and the possibility of cysticercosis.

Not only Taenia solium and Taenia saginata, but also Taenia asiatica infects humans. The last species is not included in the evaluation of the specificity of the immunodiagnostic techniques for taeniasis/cysticercosis. There is currently no specific immunodiagnostic method for T. asiatica available. Therefore, due to the fact that molecular techniques (the only tool to distinguish the 3 Taenia species) are normally not employed in routine diagnostic methods, the 2 questions concerning T. asiatica (its definite geographic distribution and its ability to cause human cysticercosis), remain open, …

Renewed hope for a vaccine against the intestinal adult Taenia solium.

Review of experimental and observational evidence about various cestode infections of mammalian hosts revives hope for the development of an effective vaccine against adult intestinal tapeworms, the central protagonists in their transmission dynamics. As for Taenia solium, there are abundant immunological data regarding cysticercosis in humans and pigs, but information about human taeniasis is scarce. A single publication reporting protection against T. solium taeniasis by experimental primo infection and by vaccination of an experimental foster host, the immunocompetent female hamster, kindle…

The current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in Indonesia.

Only a few food-borne parasitic zoonoses have been reported in Indonesia. The most frequently observed food-borne parasitic diseases are: toxoplasmosis, taeniasis and cysticercosis. Little data are available on other parasitic zoonoses in Indonesia. Taeniasis has been reported in nine provinces. Toxoplasmosis in humans, with prevalence rates ranging from 1 to 60%, has been reported in 12 provinces; in animals, toxoplasmosis is known to occur throughout the country, with serologically positive cases in as many as 75% of animals examined. However, it is expected that other parasitic zoonoses, su…

In situ detection of antigenic glycoproteins in Taenia solium metacestodes.

Taenia solium has a complex life cycle. Its cysticercus can lodge in the brain, causing neurocysticercosis (NCC), and the adult tapeworm's survival in the intestine results in taeniasis. In this study, the in situ detection of previously described glycoprotein antigens used for serological diagnosis of NCC and the detection of other glycoconjugates was explored in cysticerci and the surrounding porcine tissue to understand their potential role in pathogenesis. Immunohistochemistry with an antiserum specific for glycoprotein antigens rich in N-linked carbohydrates and in situ histochemistry wit…

Ring-screening to control endemic transmission of Taenia solium.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium is a major cause of preventable epilepsy in developing nations. Screening and treatment of human intestinal stage infection (taeniasis) within high-risk foci may reduce transmission and prevent epilepsy by limiting human exposure to infective eggs. We piloted a ring-strategy that involves screening and treatment for taeniasis among households located nearby pigs heavily-infected with the larval stage (cysticercosis). These pigs mark areas of increased transmission and can be identified by tongue examination. METHODOLOGY: We selected two villages in northern Peru for …

Infection of Taenia asiatica in a Bai Person in Dali, China.

We report here a human case of Taenia asiatica infection which was confirmed by genetic analyses in Dali, China. A patient was found to have symptoms of taeniasis with discharge of tapeworm proglottids. By sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene, we observed nucleotide sequence identity of 99% with T. asiatica and 96% with T. saginata. Using the cytochrome b (cytb) gene, 99% identity with T. asiatica and 96% identity with T. saginata were found. Our findings suggest that taeniasis of people in Dali, China may be mainly caused by T. asiatica.

Zoonotic Taenia infections with focus on cysticercosis due to Taenia solium in swine and humans.

Zoonotic taeniasis caused by the adult stage of Taenia solium, Taenia saginata or Taenia asiatica are considered neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization. The life cycle of these 3 metazoan species is very similar and includes an intermediate host: pigs in the case of T. solium and T. asiatica, and cattle in the case of T. saginata. By eating meat (pork/T. solium, T. asiatica; beef/T. saginata) containing live cysticerci, humans develop taeniasis, which is practically asymptomatic but is the main risk factor for intermediate hosts to become infected. T. saginata causes bovi…

Taenia saginata Infection in a 25-Year-Old Immigrant in Malaysia: A Case Study.

Taeniasis is a parasitic infection in humans by tapeworm species typically acquired through the ingestion of undercooked pork or beef leading to infections with Taenia solium, Taenia asiatica or Taenia saginata. We reported a case of taeniasis in a young man of Chinese nationality who presented with recurrent episodes of expelling proglottids. He was at risk due to his preference for consuming undercooked beef. He remained asymptomatic and his physical examination was unremarkable. A 330 cm tapeworm was recovered; each mature proglottid contained 12-30 primary lateral uterine branches. Stool e…
