The Denny-Brown collection: a research and teaching resource.

A large collection of potentially valuable materials compiled by the late Dr Derek Denny-Brown is described. This consists of 2,200 films of monkeys with central nervous system lesions, associated behavior and neuropathological descriptions, and histological slides. There are also 500 films of patients with a wide assortment of diseases, including some not currently seen, like postencephalitic parkinsonism. This description will enable contemporary researchers to utilize this collection in their research and teaching programs.

Urinary tuberculosis: experience of a teaching hospital in Syria.

This study was designed to show our experience of urinary tuberculosis in one of the large teaching hospitals in Syria. It was a prospective study involving 48 patients (29 males and 19 females) with confirmed tuberculous lesions in the urinary tract. The study period was between 1982-1987. The presenting symptoms were protean, and there were often delays between onset of symptoms and eventual diagnosis. The highest age incidence was in the second and fourth decades. Beside the suggestive clinical manifestations, final diagnosis was reached by various means. Repeated examinations of EMU smears…

Carotid angiography in a teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia.

The carotid angiographic studies performed in a teaching hospital (King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh) in Saudi Arabia were reviewed, and the incidence of lesions demonstrated was analysed. Intracranial tumours accounted for 50% of the lesions, with meningiomas being 40%, whilst arteriovenous malformations accounted for 5.9% of lesions. It was noted that the incidence of atherosclerosis and arteritis was low, and the examination was almost without complications. Some lesions supplied by vertebral arteries were missed. In view of this, vertebral angiography is advocated in those cases with…

Late abortion practice in a teaching hospital in India.

The medical records of 2055 patients undergoing late abortions were reviewed. These represented 15% of all abortions induced over 10 years. In 52%, abortion was performed between 13-16 weeks, and in 25% at or after 20 weeks. Abortion was requested for risk to health in 55% and for failed contraception in 40%. Surgical techniques were used in 39%. There was a trend to use vaginal surgical procedures increasingly, and intraamniotic saline decreasingly. Extraamniotic ethacridine lactate was used in 12%. Because of the cost, prostaglandin infusions were restricted to 2.5%. Planned evacuation of re

A review of urinary fistulae in a university teaching hospital.

An 8-year study of urinary fistulae from 1974 to 1981 was done in the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia. The analysis revealed no significant decrease in the number of urinary fistulae referred to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University during the period. Of 61 cases reviewed, 54 were consequent to obstetrical trauma of prolonged labor and superimposed operation or instrumentation. Four fistulae occurred as a complication of gynecologic surgery, while three originated from advanced malignancy of the cervix. Operative management of fistulae is discussed. Furthe…

Teaching sex education and counseling for the primary physician.

Today's family physicians are being confronted by increasing numbers of patients who desire and need sex education and counseling. It is suggested that the family and primary physician can approach the multiple sex-related needs of the family by understanding the family life cycle and by using permission-giving, limited information, and specific suggestions with patients as needed and as appropriate. The experience of the University of Miami's Department of Family Medicine in teaching human sexuality to medical students, residents, and faculty of the medical center is cited to help other resid…

Experience with fetal monitoring in a university teaching hospital.

Fetal monitoring during labour may be expected to decrease perinatal losses and the number of infants born with brain damage. In a prospective study of intrapartum fetal monitoring in selected high-risk pregnancies in a Winnipeg hospital the monitoring rate was 26.5% and the cesarean section rate in the monitored group was 22.0%. The fetal outcome in the monitored group was better than in the unmonitored group. The establishment of a fetal intensive care unit is believed to be strongly desirable in improving fetal surveillance during labour. Fetal monitors should be stationed in the delivery r

See one, do one, teach one--is this still how it works? A comparison of the medical and nursing professions in the teaching of practical procedures.

A survey of 80 junior doctors and nurses was performed to compare the methods of teaching medical and nursing students in eight common practical procedures. Nurses were more likely to have received formal teaching and to be supervised when first performing a procedure. Some 42% percent of doctors felt inadequately trained to carry out a practical procedure safely when performing it alone for the first time compared with 7% of nurses. This study confirms that much of the training of doctors in practical procedures is still received on an informal basis, compared with that of nurses. It also rev…

Comparison of traditional face-to-face teaching with synchronous e-learning in otolaryngology emergencies teaching to medical undergraduates: a randomised controlled trial.

Undergraduate otolaryngology teaching in the UK is generally limited primarily due to curriculum time constraints with traditional face-to-face (FtF) teaching being restrained by the limitations of time and location. Advances in network technology have opened up new doors for the delivery of teaching in the form of online learning. This study compares a traditional instructor-led lecture with synchronous e-learning (SeL) using otolaryngological emergencies teaching as an educational intervention. A randomised controlled trial was designed involving two groups of medical students attending an o…
