Prevalence, triggers and presentation of migraine among the college and university students: Review of the available literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a high-yield undergraduate medical education topic that lends itself to adaptability of content. We used a CF case paired with activities to deliver content in a near-peer teaching session. First-year (M1) and second-year (M2) medical students contributed acquired knowledge of protein structure and obstructive lung disease, respectively, to generate a concept map and address discussion questions. METHODS: Combined groups of M1 and M2 students reviewed a CF case and a concept map prompt. For 30 minutes, they created a concept map describing connections bet

Identifying the Content and Pedagogical Practices Used by Educators Teaching Stuttering and Cluttering Modules.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have reported having reduced knowledge and competence in the assessment and intervention of children and adults who stutter and clutter. One potential reason for this is embedded in a suboptimal educational foundation at a university level. PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the content taught and the pedagogical practices used by speech-language pathology educators teaching a module on stuttering and cluttering as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate program in speech-language pathology. METHOD: An on

Clipping of Anterior Circulation Aneurysms: Operative Instructions and Safety Rules for Young Cerebrovascular Surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the constant development of the technique, in the last 30 years, the endovascular treatment of the intracranial aneurysms (IAs) has gradually superseded the traditional surgery in the majority of centers. However, clipping still represents the best treatment for some anterior circulation IAs according to their angioarchitectural, topographical, and hemodynamic characteristics. Thus, the identification of residual indications for clipping and the maintenance of training programs in vascular neurosurgery appear nowadays more important than ever. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We re

Structured patient education for out-patients with hypertension in general practice: a model project in Germany.

In a model project, office-based physicians in two regions of Germany provided a structured treatment and teaching programme for out-patients with hypertension. The project was carried out in co-operation with the German Hypertension League and designed to evaluate the practicability and efficacy of the implementation in routine primary health care. A total of 111 primary health care practices in two German districts who had participated in a training course were interviewed. In 43 of these offices documented data of all patients who had received the standardised treatment and teaching were ev

The New Moms Project: educating mothers about sun protection in newborn nurseries.

Sun protection habits should begin early in life and be taught as part of routine preventive health care. Early teaching of parents aims to introduce an easily achieved means of sun protection with the goal of instilling these practices as habits in the parents and their young children. We developed a maternity nurse-led intervention for 187 mothers at newborn nurseries in Falmouth, Massachusetts, combining educational material and personal discussions. One year after the intervention we successfully contacted 73% of the mothers. Nearly 90% recalled the informational program and equal numbers

A quality assessment of cardiac auscultation material on YouTube.

BACKGROUND: YouTube is a highly utilized Web site that contains a large amount of medical educational material. Although some studies have assessed the education material contained on the Web site, little analysis of cardiology content has been made. This study aimed to assess the quality of videos relating to heart sounds and murmurs contained on YouTube. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the quality of video files purporting to provide education on heart auscultation would be highly variable. METHODS: Videos were searched for using the terms "heart sounds," "heart murmur," and "heart auscul

Guidance on Expedited Partner Therapy: A Content Analysis of Informational Materials for Providers, Pharmacists, Patients, and Partners.

BACKGROUND: The rates of sexually transmitted infections have steadily increased in the United States over the last 5 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has endorsed the use of expedited partner therapy (EPT) as an evidence-based practice to prevent chlamydial reinfection in index patients and lower barriers to treatment for partners. State health departments release guidance on EPT for providers, but it is unclear if information is available for other key stakeholders, for example, pharmacists, patients, and partners. The primary objective of this study was to conduct a rev

Development of mental health first aid guidelines for panic attacks: a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Panic attacks are common, and while they are not life-threatening events, they can lead to the development of panic disorder and agoraphobia. Appropriate help at the time that a panic attack occurs may decrease the fear associated with the attack and reduce the risk of developing an anxiety disorder. However, few people have the knowledge and skills required to assist. Simple first aid guidelines may help members of the public to offer help to people who experience panic attacks. METHODS: The Delphi method was used to reach consensus in a panel of experts. Experts included 50 prof

Cushing's disease: clinical manifestations and diagnostic evaluation.

The most common endogenous cause of Cushing's syndrome is Cushing's disease. Frequent clinical findings include weight gain, truncal obesity, striae, hypertension, glucose intolerance and infections. Cranial nerve II may be affected by enlarging pituitary adenomas in Cushing's disease; cranial nerves III, IV and VI may also be affected. The evaluation of patients with suspected Cushing's disease and syndrome requires an understanding of the proper use and limitations of the tests commonly included in the diagnostic work-up. The best screening test for Cushing's syndrome is a 24-hour urine coll

Identification and evaluation of mental retardation.

Mental retardation in young children is often missed by clinicians. The condition is present in 2 to 3 percent of the population, either as an isolated finding or as part of a syndrome or broader disorder. Causes of mental retardation are numerous and include genetic and environmental factors. In at least 30 to 50 percent of cases, physicians are unable to determine etiology despite thorough evaluation. Diagnosis is highly dependent on a comprehensive personal and family medical history, a complete physical examination and a careful developmental assessment of the child. These will guide appro

Tools developed and disseminated by guideline producers to promote the uptake of their guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) is inconsistent, despite their potential to improve the quality of health care and patient outcomes. Some guideline producers have addressed this problem by developing tools to encourage faster adoption of new guidelines. This review focuses on the effectiveness of tools developed and disseminated by guideline producers to improve the uptake of their CPGs. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of implementation tools developed and disseminated by guideline producers, which accompany or follow the publication of a CPG, to promot
