Virtual reality reduces anxiety of children in the plaster room: a randomized controlled trial.

AIMS: Paediatric fractures are highly prevalent and are most often treated with plaster. The application and removal of plaster is often an anxiety-inducing experience for children. Decreasing the anxiety level may improve the patients' satisfaction and the quality of healthcare. Virtual reality (VR) has proven to effectively distract children and reduce their anxiety in other clinical settings, and it seems to have a similar effect during plaster treatment. This study aims to further investigate the effect of VR on the anxiety level of children with fractures who undergo plaster removal or re

Psychometric evaluation of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children: construct validity and normative data.

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) and Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children (SPAI-C) in a sample of 1147 adolescents aged 13-17 years. The fit indices of confirmatory factor analyses were comparable to those obtained in prior studies and supported the hypothesized models of the SAS-A and SPAI-C. The internal consistency was good and 12-month test-retest reliability modest for both measures. A significant, positive correlation was found between the SAS-A and SPAI-C, showing that these measures assess related, but rela

Rating depression and anxiety after mastectomy: observer versus self-rating scales.

Paykel's Clinical Interview for Depression (CID), an observer-rated scale, and Kellner's Symptom Questionnaire (SQ), a self-rating inventory, were administered to twenty-six patients with breast cancer: 1) the day prior to discharge after mastectomy or lumpectomy, 2) after six months, during a follow-up outpatient visit. There were no significant changes in depression and anxiety (except for self-rated anxiety) and, indeed, there were very high test-retest correlations. Observer and self-rated assessments were significantly related, and these correlations improved on outpatient follow-up. DSM-

Pilot study of anxiety and depression in prepubertal children.

Early detection of anxiety and depression is important because of the relationship between these disorders, suicide and other problems (i.e. social, phobias, learning problems). This study screened prepubertal students in a school setting for symptoms of anxiety and depression using self-report measures (Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Children's Depression Inventory). Controls and children who scored high on measures of anxiety or depression or both were interviewed with their parents and were tested using the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents (computer versi

Mechanism of cognitive processing for acupuncture action on generalized anxiety with naturally occurring consecutive partial sleep deprivation in early adulthood: a randomized controlled study and evaluation of event-related potentials.

INTRODUCTION: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common mental disorder that often begins in adolescence or early adulthood and is characterized by widespread and persistent anxiety. Partial sleep deprivation (PSD) is an important risk factor for GAD development and a common comorbidity. Adolescence is a period of rapid brain and nervous system development, and during this time, the occurrence of GAD can lead to neurocognitive deficits, such as impaired attention, cognitive control, and attention bias, that significantly affect cognitive function. However, relatively little research has b

Investigation of the relationship between anxiety and heart rate variability in fibromyalgia: A new quantitative approach to evaluate anxiety level in fibromyalgia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is identified by widespread musculoskeletal pain, sleep disturbance, nonrestorative sleep, fatigue, morning stiffness and anxiety. Anxiety is very common in Fibromyalgia and generally leads to a misdiagnosis. Self-rated Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and doctor-rated Hamilton Anxiety Inventory (HAM-A) are frequently used by specialists to determine anxiety that accompanies fibromyalgia. However, these semi-quantitative anxiety tests are still subjective as the tests are scored using doctor-rated or self-rated scales. METHOD: In this study, we investigated

Test anxiety and working memory system.

The purpose was to examine the effect of test anxiety on deficits in the articulatory loop in the working memory system. We used a verbal memory task to occupy the articulatory loop and a spatial memory task to occupy the visuospatial scratch pad. 17 highly test-anxious and 19 low-anxiety subjects performed both tasks under an anxiety-inducing situation during which they were observed by a monitor camera. Percentage of correct responses and reaction times were measured as indices of task performance. Highly anxious subjects reported feeling worry and cognitive self-concern more than the low-an

[Psychological disorders encountered during the post-transplantation period of bone marrow].

Psychological issues encountered during the procedure of a bone marrow transplantation (BMT) have already been described. Anxiety, depressive behaviour and anger are reactions usually observed. For inpatients, the psychological status seems to follow the somatic status. Among patients with a kidney transplant, some authors have observed psychological problems related to the patient's impression of acquiring some of the donor's characteristics through the graft. Little is known about psychological issues following bone marrow transplantation, which requires a donor in the case of allogeneic tra

Pindolol augmentation in patients with treatment-resistant panic disorder: A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of pindolol as an augmentor of fluoxetine in treatment-resistant panic disorder (PD). Twenty-five outpatients having PD with or without agoraphobia were included. These patients had not responded to two different trials with antidepressants and an 8-week trial of fluoxetine 20 mg/day. Treatment-resistant PD was defined as a less than 20% reduction in score on the Panic Self-Questionnaire (number of attacks per week) (PSQ) and the Clinical Anxiety Scale With Panic Attacks (CAS+PA). These patients continued to receive fluoxetine 20 mg/day

Patient Anxiety, Pain, and Satisfaction With Image-Guided Needle Biopsy.

Image-guided percutaneous needle biopsy has become the preferred diagnostic modality for bone and soft tissue tumors. However, to the authors' knowledge, the levels of patient anxiety, pain, and satisfaction before and after the procedure have not been studied. Sixty-five patients undergoing image-guided needle biopsy of a possible bone or soft tissue tumor were prospectively surveyed to quantify preprocedure and postprocedure levels of anxiety and pain and to determine demographic and clinical correlates of anxiety, pain, and satisfaction. Anxiety was measured with the Spielberger State-Trait
