Predicting Early Dropout in a Digital Tobacco Cessation Intervention: Replication and Extension Study.

BACKGROUND: Detecting early dropout from digital interventions is crucial for developing strategies to enhance user retention and improve health-related behavioral outcomes. Bricker and colleagues proposed a single metric that accurately predicted early dropout from 4 digital tobacco cessation interventions based on log-in data in the initial week after registration. Generalization of this method to additional interventions and modalities would strengthen confidence in the approach and facilitate additional research drawing on it to increase user retention. OBJECTIVE: This study had two resea

Interventions to improve daily medication use among adolescents and young adults: what can we learn for youth pre-exposure prophylaxis services?

OBJECTIVE: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an important HIV prevention method and studies have shown that young people ages 15-24 have difficulty adhering to daily PrEP. The field of PrEP delivery for young people is relatively nascent and lessons about potential PrEP adherence interventions could be learned from the larger evidence base of adherence interventions for other daily medications among youth. DESIGN: Systematic review of adherence support interventions for adolescents. METHODS: We searched PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO through January 2020 for oral contraceptive pi

Predicting Early Warning Signs of Psychotic Relapse From Passive Sensing Data: An Approach Using Encoder-Decoder Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) are chronic conditions, but the severity of symptomatic experiences and functional impairments vacillate over the course of illness. Developing unobtrusive remote monitoring systems to detect early warning signs of impending symptomatic relapses would allow clinicians to intervene before the patient's condition worsens. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aim to create the first models, exclusively using passive sensing data from a smartphone, to predict behavioral anomalies that could indicate early warning signs of a psychotic relapse. METHODS:

Community-Based Surveillance in Côte d'Ivoire.

Community-based surveillance can be an important component of early warning systems. In 2016, the Côte d'Ivoire Ministry of Health launched a community-based surveillance project in 3 districts along the Guinea border. Community health workers were trained in detection and immediate reporting of diseases and events using a text-messaging platform. In December 2017, surveillance data from before and after implementation of community-based surveillance were analyzed in intervention and control districts. A total of 3,734 signals of priority diseases and 4,918 unusual health events were reported,

A systematic review of strategies to increase access to health services among children in low and middle income countries.

BACKGROUND: Universal Health Coverage is widely endorsed as the pivotal goal in global health, however substantial barriers to accessing health services for children in low and middle-income countries (LMIC) exist. Failure to access healthcare is an important contributor to child mortality in these settings. Barriers to access have been widely studied, however effective interventions to overcome barriers and increase access to services for children are less well documented. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of effectiveness of interventions aimed at increasing access to health service

Individuals motivated to participate in adherence, care and treatment (imPACT): development of a multi-component intervention to help HIV-infected recently incarcerated individuals link and adhere to HIV care.

BACKGROUND: Policy-makers promote a seek, test, treat and retain (STTR) strategy to expand HIV testing, support linkage and engagement in care, and enhance the continuous use of antiretroviral therapy for those HIV-infected. This HIV prevention strategy is particularly appropriate in correctional settings where HIV screening and treatment are routinely available yet many HIV-infected individuals have difficulty sustaining sufficient linkage and engagement in care, disease management, and viral suppression after prison release. METHODS/DESIGN: Our research team developed Project imPACT (indivi

Information and communication technology based prompting for treatment compliance for people with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Non-compliance is a significant problem among people with serious mental disorders, presenting a challenge for mental health professionals. Prompts such as telephone calls, visits, and a posted referral letter to patients are currently used to encourage patient attendance at clinics and/or compliance with medication. More recently, the use of information and communication technology (ICT)-based prompting methods have increased. Methods include mobile text message (SMS - short message service), e-mail or use of any other electronic device with the stated purpose of encouraging compl

Effective Messaging Against Youth E-Cigarette Use: Does Humor Make a Difference?

Anti-vaping campaigns have the potential to reduce youth e-cigarette use in the United States. It is unclear how humor, a common feature in youth anti-tobacco communication, affects intended and unintended message outcomes and interacts with message themes and youth rebelliousness. We conducted a mixed between- and within-subjects experiment using an online convenience sample of 13-17-year-old non-current e-cigarette users (N = 1,366). Participants were randomized to view anti-vaping public service announcement (PSA) ads with humorous text and humorous imagery (HH), humorous text and non-humor

Accident ahead? Difficulties of drivers with and without reading impairment recognising words and pictograms in variable message signs.

A timely and accurate acquisition of the information provided by variable message signs (VMS) can be crucial while driving. In the current study, we assess the difficulties of adults with dyslexia acquiring the information shown in VMS and provide evidence to discuss the controversial use of pictograms as potential countermeasures. Twenty-two adults with dyslexia and 22 matched controls completed a simulated driving session. The legibility of 12 VMS was assessed, including six text messages (e.g. "ACCIDENT") and six single pictograms (e.g. the icon for "accident ahead"). On average, participan
